I don't think you are "not smart enough" to read her, and you have some of the same issues with her writing that I noticed when I read the one (and only) book by her. I reviewed the book for a blog, and one of the commenters insinuated I was stupid for not being able to understand the Regency cant. What you said about Heyer and Austen in #7 is spot on. I feel better to know I'm not alone. Almost all the bloggers I love just adore her, and I was beginning to feel it must be just me. I know this is an older post, but I couldn't resist commenting. Thanks!

Karin - Historicals are lovely, but I can see where modern novels are attractive.

Heidenkind - haha! Very exciting! Always! ;)

Bella - I'm going to have to find and try a M. Chesney!

Susan - Vampire heroes in cravats... yum! Oh and sheepcubusses...

Omigosh, it's so great to read this. I have felt the same for years, but have kept my opinion quiet, because for so many, Heyer is the gold standard in regency. I tried several times and finally gave up. I feel so free now! Kinda like when I found out I wasn't the only one who doesn't 'get' musicals. LOL

My fav regency author (and she's British) is Marion Chesney. I own every one of her books. They're light, fast reads but hilarious and full of authentic poignancy. I have others, but Chesney in MY gold standard.

They talk with exclamation points because it's exciting! What light through yonder window breaks! Etc., etc.

Note: I have never read a Heyer novel.

Great post Zarabeth! I know what a cravat is! Not only will you find it in Regency, but my ideal vampire hero always wears one. Very sexy, methinks!

The difference between Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer is that Austen transcends Regency and becomes universal.
>>>>

I liked this.

Meantime I have a hard time getting through any historical romance.
