Offspring in romance is one of those things that really get readers up in arms. We either love them or hate them. Few ride the middle and think they're okay if the story warrants their appearance.
In general I hate them. No, seriously, I do, despite that I've given a few of them 5 Stars. I think they detract and the author spends more time focusing on the newcomer's relationship to them, on their relationship with their parent, or just on them in general than on the romance.

What's your favorite story with children central to the romance? My top two are:
Charming the Prince. For a long time it was my #1 on my favorites shelf. There's a parcel of brats in this one - nearly a dozen!
Smooth Talking Stranger. Can't tell you how much I loved that one and the hero and heroine would never have met if it wasn't for the baby involved.

I’m not a person who likes babies in romance. I think that they imply a more family-oriented story and that’s definitely not what I’m looking for. I always thought it was based on age. Babies are not a part of my life and won’t be for another 5-7 years (at least, that’s the plan). My mom loves kids, has had two, and likes family-oriented romances of that kind.
Now, there are exceptions. Generally if there is one child and the kid is young, cute, and not a HUGE part of the story, it’s okay. I recently enjoyed Temptation by Jennifer Crusie and Duchess by Night by Eloisa James and I liked the inclusion of the kid in both of those. Maybe my maternal instinct is kicking in. =)
I’m not a fan of children in books, movies, or TV shows. (Unless it’s a children’s book, my favorite of which is Artemis Fowl.) Of course, I don’t read Young Adult because I’m annoyed by the teenage angst. I’ve successfully blocked out my teen years since I annoyed myself!
I think they detract from the overall plot and in the case of romances, I think entirely too much time is spent on the child to really have a romance. Which is reality with single parents, but not what I, personally, want to read. They ARE a fact of life, especially in historicals, but I’d rather hear about them than read about them.

The whole point of romance novels is to have the steamy scene come from NOWHERE. For instance, throwing the centerpiece aside and going for it on the dining room table. At 4 in the afternoon.
Can’t do that with a kid running around.
It’s FICTION!!! Reality has kids running around. Therefore, the kids have to go.
I’m surprised nobody has selected pregnant with another’s baby… what about Morning Glory by LaVyrle Spencer? Some of the best kids in romance books have the heroine pregnant by others and our heroes rising to the challenge of wooing their woman and fatherhood.

It’s the baby thing. I agree with Samanther. I don’t want reality in my reading. Another reason I don’t read Oprah’s selections. Depressing!
One of my least favorite novels with kids has one child throwing up constantly and the other being a little mutant. The heroine can’t have kids and the hero was desperate for help… they were his younger sisters by like a decade or two
