Review: Hold Me If You Can by Stephanie Rowe

Natalie Fleming was briefly murdered by a deedub. She also owns a boutique chocolate shop. But she has a challenge ahead – creating magical desserts overnight after having her shop looted. She goes into her walk-in freezer and meets her murderer. Boy, that’s one hell of a way to start your day.

Nigel Aquarian comes to Natalie’s rescue. He’s a man with his own set of problems. He’s doing a favor for Natalie’s sister. What makes Nigel unique is that he has some interesting powers. Some of those powers are tied to his art.

Nigel is seen interacting with some other warriors in his penthouse. I love how Nigel talked to them about being “men”. I can almost hear the theme from Two and a Half Men playing in the background. Stephanie also has us laughing as they interact and makeup is added to the mix.

A lot of Stephanie’s male characters are obnoxious. But the women are the ones that seem to keep them in line. It’s nice to see that the hero needs a woman in order to feel complete. This is what adds romance to the story. If you’re looking for a lot of sex between our main characters, you will not find it here.

Stephanie certainly gives us some interesting sounding demons. None that you would want to meet in a dark alley somewhere. But if you could have any type of power, like Nigel and his men, what would you like?

As you read this book you may become a little confused. The three books look like they can be standalones but if you want to understand what the warriors, and demons, are about I suggest that you read books one and two.

Natalie is in need of some help and she will get it from an unlikely source, Ella Smithweiser. Ella used to work for Nigel’s archenemy. Nigel’s art is also turning against him so Ella becomes important for both of them.

Then to add confusion to the mix, another character appears – a dream genie named Charles Morgan. Don’t get confused but sometimes he is referred to as “Smutty”. His jailor also has a connection to Nigel. Mari is the second in command to the archenemy.

Mari thinks she has a noble cause but you know what they say about good intentions. The more I read about Mari, the more I feel that she is just plain crazy. What’s good about this story is that you will see that she gets her just desserts (sorry about the spoiler).

Stephanie also puts a life lesson in her story line although it doesn’t show itself until the end. The story ends with us wondering if there will be a book 4. She leaves us hanging in the balance – who will be the characters to have their story told next?

Review: I enjoyed the characters’ motivation (the driving force behind their every action), Hailey’s writing voice, and the potency of the love between the characters. As I’m reviewing a novel, I generally take notes. Next to favorite scenes, I’ll draw happy faces. Big ones. I’m not joking! At novel’s end-there were lots of happy faces.

Recommendations: Mega Mass-Appeal for Readers 18+

Evermine has elements that’ll appeal to a wide range of readers. First and foremost, it’ll speak to romance readers. The main characters have sacrificed so much for each other. And their love is both palpable and potent. What romance reader wouldn’t appreciate that in a story?

Secondly, the novel will call to fantasy readers. This story begins in a primary world (the Earthen Colony) and then moves to a secondary world (in the Askaran Realm). I suppose, this too will appeal to sci-fi lovers.

I’m now speaking to anyone with a weakness/fondness for damaged/scarred heroes. Oh-yeah! That sexy Evanti demon, Harper, will have you volunteering to lick every…single…one of his scars. Reader Beware: To get your tongue anywhere near him you’ll need to fight off an Askaran demoness named Emma, but it’ll be worth the fight. Now please stand behind me. I’m first in line!

Do you like the friends-to-lovers tropes? The hero and heroine are. Like dark secrets, do you? Harper has one that may or may not hinder his chance at love. Any paranormal readers out there? This novel has demons and magic users. And if you purchase a novel hoping it’ll give you a HFA, let me say, “Evermine's
happily-forever-after is profoundly touching.” The story will also charm anyone who’s ever wished star-crossed lovers a well-deserved happiness.

My Favorite Character: The Hero!

Harper is everything you’d want from a hero. He’s strong, sexy in his demonic form, and he’ll sacrifice everything for the love of “his” woman. He’s also passionate and he’s got wings. Not the angelic type, either. The leathery kind you’d expect from a demon. I love when they turn crimson when he’s aroused, when he uses them to fly, when they enfold Emmaline, and when he uses them to cover her like a blanket.

Favorite Scenes:

Scene #1: The tub scene. Oh-no! That’s all I’m divulging. You’ll have to savor that scene without my spoilers.

Scene # 2: Evanti males like Harper are claimed by their mates. Emma’s a half-breed Askaran demoness who doesn’t have the first clue how to claim him. I love when he enlightens her!

Scene # 3: An Askaran female’s in heat. And Harper reacts “strongly” to the pheromones she’s emitting. But she’s not the female he wants. Love how sexually intense he reacts around Emma. Especially what he says when he grips her thighs. Again, I’m not divulging!

Others in the Series: Everlong (Daughters of Askara, book one).

What’s Next? Book three in the series is titled, Eversworn. No release date, yet. Let’s hope it’s soon!

I really enjoyed this book.

The story: Rachel is tired of being unmarried. While all her friends can tell horror stories about their men, she has nothing to say, so when her new hairdresser asks if she is married, she spins a story about the perfect man she is married to.

And then when she meets her friend for a drink, she spins the same story to the new women she meets, even as her friend challenges her about the story in privacy. Rachel says she will put them straight, the next time she meets them.

And then…

Imagine her surprise when she goes home and finds the man of her dreams, the one she has spun lies about, ensconced in her apartment, having prepared the gourmet meal she had said he prepares, with a perfect body, perfect sex, perfect everything.

And because she doesn’t remember how they got to that point, he re-proposes to her and tells her about their marriage, and…

But honestly, perfect is not what it is cracked up to be.

Even perfectly perfect in all his ways, after all she did make him up, ends up driving her mad.

The ending: Well, I won’t give it away. It ends differently than I thought, and perhaps my ending would have been better – and I suspect you could propose several endings yourself. But it is satisfying and wraps up some of the loose ends, while giving me other questions, which perhaps if I had read slower, I might have caught – or not. Perhaps the ends are not wrapped up tightly.

This book is delightfully funny, wry, interesting, witty…with good friends…with a mother going through her own mid-life crisis – funny in itself.

You would enjoy it. Part fantasy, part reality, a little bit of everything.

Review: Christmas Cheer: The Love Genie by Pepper Goodrich

Nicholas Eugene Spanekopolas works at the Fantasies-R-Us Motel and is looking to do a promotion for Christmas. Mitch McDonald was checking his email and saw a message from an old friend. He follows the link and fills out the form. Now we wait to see what the Love Genie has in store for him.

Irene Landin lost her husband a couple years before. She just wants to snuggle. She goes to the motel to get something that she hasn’t had in a while.

What I love about Pepper’s story is that our major characters are older than some. It shows that love can come at any age. The reader doesn’t need to be of a certain age to appreciate the romance of an older couple.

As you continue to read this story, you’ll see how the Love Genie got his name. You can tell he takes his job very seriously. He believes in having the fantasies realistic down to the clothing and the couple’s meal. If you could have the Love Genie create a fantasy for you what would it be?

Mitch arrives at the motel and changes into his costume for the evening. Then he walks into his fantasy and guess who’s there to greet him. As Mitch and Irene get to know each other, Mitch decided they have at least one thing in common. We also see that Irene loves a man with a great butt – and that’s not a bad thing.

As the story ended, I was left wanting more. I wasn’t ready for the story to end. What happened to Mitch and Irene after they left the motel? Do I need to use my imagination and make an ending for them?

Being the holidays, if you’re strapped for time, this is a great story to read. It may even give you some ideas of things to do with your significant other. This is definitely a title you will want to read every holiday season.

Review: No Ordinary Love by Kate Lynd

This story is written in the first person.

Caliiope is a human rebel who was previously enslaved and tortured. She’s a member of the Resistance. During that time, she met James Lawton who is a half-breed. They first met when she was captured and put on a slave ship. They now pick up where they left off from when Caliope was first enslaved.

Kate has me wanting to read how Caliope and James met for the first time. What was it that made their first time so combustible? What was it that drew them to each other?

Kate gives us a lot of sex in just a few pages. I would have loved more of the story of Caliope’s and James’ adventures in their fight of the Capturian. I actually would have liked less sex, yes I said less sex, in this story. It’s like watching bad porn; you want to turn it off. Too much sex in this story just didn’t work for me.

I actually think that I would have liked Kate’s story more if the characters were more developed. Plus, the story was dropped and we’re left wanting more. Does this mean that there will be another book about the life of Caliope and James? What does the future have in store for them? Do they defeat the Capturian?

Summary: Book Three in That Old Black Magic Series

Maxwell Truitt (hero) is a shark-shifting sheriff. And for reasons unbeknownst to me, I want to sing that to the tune of Bob Marley’s song, I Shot the Sheriff.

All right, let’s move on. Max is patrolling the Atlantic one night when he rescues a woman from the clutches of a leviathan. And now Sheriff Truitt wants answers! Why was the leviathan so far from its territory? Why was Willa Jameson (heroine) parked near the ocean…at night? Max may want answers, but he’s not going to get them. For starters, Willa’s unconscious. When she does come to-she doesn’t remember what happened. And when she does remember, her memories can’t be trusted. Someone’s tampered with them.

The sheriff and his seal-shifting friend (Boone) will give Jameson medical assistance and nurse her back to health. But their involvement with the witch is about to plunge them into a deep-dark oceanic secret. A secret that may herald a horrific Armageddon. It’s a race against time to find Poseidon’s trident! Can a shark-shifter, one seal, and a witch save mankind from annihilation? May…be. After all, Willa’s not exactly-human.

Review: Ms. Redford is exceptionally proficient in escapism. In this third novel in That Old Black Magic series she introduces us to a plethora of new characters (all shifters): sharks, seals, dolphins, eels, walruses, and soul collecting leviathans. Just to name a few. Those readers who enjoy fantastical worlds will enjoy the portal journey from a land based Georgia into a watery Atlantis.

I felt that Maximum Witch was funnier than the earlier installments, and thoroughly enjoyed Willa’s inner slut as well as her naked cowgirl. It was also nice reading the contrasts between what the characters’ were thinking vs. what they actually say. It’s those contrasts that shed light onto the characters themselves, and also make for some comedic moments for the reader.

Because books one and two explored the witch-familiar link, I kept expecting Maximum Witch to do the same. Which sadly, it didn’t. On the plus side, the author gives us an eerie insight into the leviathans’ powers. How the soul collecting ones track a soul and how they’re able to transform their physical appearance, etc. This is one of those I can’t-get-enough-of series! And I’m eagerly awaiting Getting Familiar with Your Demon. It’s about a virgin witch and a demon soul collector named Samael Gorasola.

Recommendations: Recommended for sea loving paranormal erotic romance readers, erotic readers, adults who enjoy the fantasy genre, and those who like stories about Atlantis. Note: This novel contains certain paraphilic scenes such as steamy voyeurism and exhibitionism. It also has M/F and M/F/M sexual encounters.

What I Enjoyed:

Favorite Character: I thought the antagonist rocked! Reva’s a homicidal siren. If her ear-splitting wail can crack a driveway, imagine what it could do to your eardrums. Reviewer shudders violently.

Scene: There’s a scene where Max and Willa are having sexual intercourse in a Jacuzzi and Boone’s watching them. `Course it isn’t long before he goes from watching to participating. Reviewer grins wickedly. Then rereads the scene for the umpteenth time.

Review: Luck of the Devil (Speak of the Devil, Book 1) by Patricia Eimer

This story is written in the first person.

We see that Faith Bettincourt and her friends are not exactly human. But she has a human job working in a hospital. She’s a charge nurse in the Children’s ICU unit. Her friend Lisa is a succubus who’s also a nurse. Faith is also the youngest daughter of the devil.

As you read, you’ll notice that as a succubus Lisa isn’t very good at it. If you’re a fan of the series Drop Dead Diva, you can almost picture April Browlby (character: Stacy Barrett) as Lisa – it seems to be a perfect fit. Lisa is just as “dippy” as Stacy is.

Faith isn’t your typical looking girl either – she’s a demon off the old block. She can also do some things that we can’t do like teleport from one place to another. She also has a crush on her next door neighbor, Matt. As you read, you will see that they start a relationship. But even Matt is not all that he seems.

Faith’s brother Tolliver is a major pain. He’s also the one that made Lisa into a succubus. But Faith is different from most demons – she has a conscience. Not your typical demon. Although Patricia has made all her characters different from what I thought they would be – in a good way.

Faith is coming out of a coffee shop and who should she bump into but none other than her sister, Hope. Hope isn’t any better than the brother. As I continue reading, I can definitely see the actors from “Drop Dead Diva” playing the characters in Patricia’s book. It would make a great Lifetime movie or series. I would definitely watch.

If I could cast the part of the devil, I would love to see Steve Martin in the part. For the mother, I could see Diane Keaton. And of course Faith would have to be Brooke Elliot (character: Jane Bingum). Jane’s demeanor would fit Faith’s perfectly.

Patricia also gives us some mystery and suspense. This is all a great mix. It’s what keeps us reading from the beginning of the story all the way to the end. You have no choice but to read the whole story – it’s that good. As I was reading, there were parts that I just had to laugh.

Don’t let the title of this story fool you. It’s definitely not a dark story with some sex thrown in. It’s a very funny tale with romance thrown into the mix. This is definitely a story that you may want to read more than once. I went into reading this thinking this would be a book to read around Halloween – boy was I wrong!

Review: A Clockwork Fairytale by Helen Scott Taylor

This is book 1 in the “Sorcerers of Arco” series.

We see Melba trying to escape from being captured. Master Turk appears to be a Robin Hood of sorts. Mel wants to pledge her service to him. He’s impressed by her skills but doesn’t realize that not everything is as it appears.

They have Jinn that inhabit their world. Master Turk has an Earth Jinn that tends his plants. He also has a very smart housekeeper, Gwinnie. No one can pull anything over on her – not even Mel.

Gwinnie is someone you need to get used to. She’s very gruff and brusque. She is a character that takes some getting used to. She also appears to hate Mel – and why is that. You’ll have to keep reading to see if that ever changes.

For some reason Melba wants to be a spy and she feels that Master Turk can do that for her. He also has some special abilities – he can track people and listen to their thoughts just by them having a special stone. If you had that kind of ability, whose thoughts would you want to listen to?

He wants Mel to start acting like a girl instead of the boy he was raised to be. We have to wonder what his motives are. You’ll just have to read the story to find out. We watch as Mel grows into a young lady and that includes the feelings that go along with it.

If you’ve watched the Mummy movies, there is a scene that just reminds you of some of the creepy scenes – it will make you shiver. It definitely makes it a different type of fairytale. Very different from the fairytales that I grew up with.

Vittorio seems to be the evil in this story. He wants to be king and will do anything to make that happen. He also knows how to change his looks that can fool people. He feels that Turk is getting in his way of getting what he wants. How does he accomplish this? This is what will keep you reading – you need to have this question answered.

You’ll need to read this book as a fantasy and not as a romance. If you are looking for a sexy fairytale, this book is not it. There are plots and twists in this tale just like a suspense novel. We have questions that need to be answered – what will happen to Turk, Dante, Vittorio, and Melba? Will good overcome evil? Will we ever see Turk and Melba fall in love?

If you are a softhearted person, this story may not be for you. Even I cringed at some of the cruelty written into the storyline. You will be surprised at how the story ends. This is what will draw you in to reading the second book.

Four separate stories form the unusual tales in this book where the stories are fantasy romance based and every one has a jewel in the title; Topaz, Turquoise, Amber and Amethyst. They are all written by different authors and all well known around the fantasy circuit.

Topaz and the Lucky Seven by Carrie S. Masek

It is Alma’s Betrothal Season and her best friend, Zaida must make sure that she picks the one man who deserves her love. They have a strange relationship being born on the same day, and liking one another so much, their friendship could never be broken by anyone. Zaida must be careful though, as she is a low born girl, and one who wouldn’t normally be allowed to see Alma, let alone talk to her, or as she knows, go to any balls the princesses may have. She is teased by the others for this, but she is a headstrong girl and doesn’t mind telling them off for being so cruel. She knows she isn’t like the others but has intelligence enough to notice when other men who aren’t any good for her take an interest in marriage.

Alma can't see the problems other eligible men can cause her, but Zaida knows what men are like, and won't let her down. I liked the timing of this story, and as it was short I did want to read more - it captivated me and I didn't really want it to end.

The Turquoise Gown by Jane Toombs

This story takes us to paranormal historical territory with Theodora’s stepmother telling her a tale of a gown that will find the wearer the perfect mate. There are sceptics who would think this a useless tale, but when it actually happens, one can only wonder who the handsome male will be, and what he will be like. Theodora is a girl with a fuller figure than most, so she finds it unusual that she could even get a gown like that on.

Theo had no idea her mother believed in magic and in a much newer age of 1890 too. Her mother had died when she was very young, so it is understandable that she would want to know more about her and what she was like. I found this a fun read even though it was set in such a past time. The humour comes from hearing about how Theo is being made to have smaller meals and take walks instead of gorging on sweets – it is either an attempt to make her slim for good, or it could be a way of her stepmother helping her to get into that gown of hers.

The Amber Tower by Janet Lane Walters

Fantasy romance is the theme of the next story where the rakish Prince Rafel likes his girls, but thinks nothing of commitment with any of them, let alone marriage. He finds he has no depth for love, or affection that could amount to anything that would lead to any commitment, so he goes deep into the woods to find a witch who might change all that for the better. The witch has other plans, though and manages to ensnare him enough to have him imprisoned in an amber tower where he has one of two choices – he can choose from one of two women – but he has to be careful as one is good and the other is bad, or to put it bluntly, one is really the witch herself, and the other is a pure princess. The question is, will he fall for the princess who has nothing or the witch who, it seems has…everything?

It has been a hundred years since the first prince had been taken by the witch, and even though he is told about her, he doesn't believe in witches, thinking it is low born gossip. Once he does make the journey to the witch though, he finds that she has put a curse on his family for years, and he is only one in a long line of princes and heirs to the Rafel throne to be ensnared by her - yet he might also be the one to break this curse. Rafel will strike readers as a tragic character who rather than being full of himself is, in reality, a man who cannot lie to women. He really can't love or have affection when his parents want him to marry for prestige and heirs. This story can serve as a cautionary tale, but also as a realisation one for the prince and what he thinks of women.

Moonlight Becomes You by Karen Wiesner

As a story, this forms a part of her long-running Woodcutters Grim series of novels appearing in a compilation of stories. Since the evil had laid its grip on Woodcutters Grim the Defenders have had to make sure their children can grow up in a safer place that it would have been, or the horrors that lurked around there could have picked them off one by one. This story, like her other novels is loosely based on the fairy tale of the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse. Heather Rowe is at a loss as to what is happening to her child, and when she can’t get any answers from the doctors who look at the child, she has to return to Woodcutters Grim, where her man, Lance lives to find out what is going on.

From the first three pages Karen has the reader find out more about the characters than if she had waited. She wants the reader to know of the characters first before she sets the action off in this story. Heather wants to know what is going on with the child, and only he has the answers, but she has only heard a little about Woodcutters Grim and the rumours of the curse, and nothing more. Heather can’t understand why he knows so much about her and her him, but when he answers all her questions, she finally comes to terms with what she has to do to save herself and her child.

Genie Knows Best is book 2 of the “Bottled Magic” series

Samantha Blaine finds a copper lantern that she thinks will change her life. She starts to see and hear creatures that for us don’t exist. She’s also come in contact with a real hottie. His name is Kaled and he is the genie of the lantern. We also see that there are rules to being a djinni. He’s there to grant her wishes. But Samantha gets more than the three wishes in the stories we grew up with. With all those wishes, what would you wish for?

We also meet Samantha’s greedy ex-fiancé Albert Viehl. You will see early on that he will go to any lengths to get what he wants. He thinks only of himself. Judi does a great job of painting him as such a jerk. He is definitely a character that you like to see bad things happen to him. He will keep popping up every once-in-a-while. He only thinks of how he can make money. You just keep hoping that he will get what’s coming to him.

One thing I love about Judi’s story is that she doesn’t make Samantha a woman who wants riches beyond her wildest dreams, sex with the hunkiest guy on the planet (in my opinion there isn’t anything wrong with that wish), or her own private island. This tends to be Kal’s story and Samantha is a vehicle for which his wish can come true.

Judi takes you on a magical trip so you don’t mind the lack of romance at the beginning. You want to find out more about the place that Kal and Sam have landed in. I love how Judi gives Sam a conscience where she makes her wishes for other people. How many of us would do the same thing?

Kal sees to Sam’s comfort and these don’t take wishes but then Sam turns the tables on him. She wishes him a massage. I wish I could have been there! But then Sam actually gives him the massage – oh to be in her shoes. Kal then gives her what she secretly wishes for.

As Judi starts to give us the good stuff, one of her magical creatures interrupts everything. Then the reality of Sam’s life catches up with her. Is she a poor little rich girl or are we going to see her change her life – it’s never too late. We hope that she ends up making the right decisions.

The day starts to catch up with her and Kal puts her in a nightgown. He decides it’s better if he sleeps in his lantern – too much temptation. You’ll definitely want to read what happens next. But then we get another magical appearance. It’s just like in the movies with the running gag – they just keep popping up. But it works here because you want to keep on reading.

Judi gives us a couple of minor characters, Maille and Bart that you just have to laugh about. They are husband and wife (if you can call it that) who have quite a few babies. Once the four of them get back to Maille’s place, you will have a good laugh. Judi does a great job of getting us to laugh throughout her story. You can almost picture this scene taking place.

If you’re looking for a book with lots of sex, you won’t find it here – and it’s not needed. If you’re looking for a romance with some laughs, you will definitely find that in this book. Judi also has you wondering what she has in store for us next.

You do not have to read the books in this series in order. But I definitely recommend that you read this book. You will find that this is a story that you will want to read more than once.
