One of my very first crushes was Errol Flynn. I still remember the Saturday afternoon I sat and watched Captain Blood on TV in our family room—I would have been about twelve at the time—and fell head over heels for that dashing guy wearing the cape slung across his one shoulder, the way that he usually wore it in films, so his sword arm stayed free. I was totally smitten…and totally crushed when I learned that the man I’d just fallen in love with on screen had been dead twenty years.

That’s the thing about films—you can find yourself being attracted to men who are no longer living. This happens sometimes in my research as well, when I come across letters or journals from someone whose thoughts I begin to connect with, until I think how much I would have enjoyed sitting down face-to-face with them, getting to know them.

One of the great things about being a writer is that I can bridge that time barrier whenever I choose. I can resurrect those men I’ve met in letters, interact with them, and let them walk and talk and breathe, but it’s a far cry, still, from truly meeting them.

The same year I saw Captain Blood I also watched a made-for-TV movie called The Two Worlds of Jennie Logan, in which Lindsay Wagner travelled back in time thanks to an antique dress and met her soulmate in the past, the man that she was meant to love and be with.

That’s likely what set me to wondering, what if the right man for you really did live in some other time? And it’s probably that thought that, thirty years later, inspired me to do what I’d always said I’d never do: write a time travel story.

I’m still searching, though, for a time-travelling dress that can carry me back to the forties so I can get Errol Flynn’s autograph…

When Joan, the heroine of No Proper Lady, finds herself back in Victorian England, she’s pretty happy about it. Sure, she takes issue with some expectations for women—but compared to the post-apocalyptic future she came from, where demon lords rule the Earth, 1888 is a pretty easy time to live. Since my time includes more lattes and laptops and fewer tentacled things trying to eat my face, I think I’d be less enthused about going back permanently.

As a tourist, though? Absolutely. Get me some money, a fake name, and a chance to go back to the twenty-first century next time I get a cavity, and I’d take all my vacation days in Victorian England. Here’s why:

10. An Age of Discovery! Evolution, spiritualism, railways, automobiles—the Victorian era was as inventive and controversial as our own, and people really seemed to get invested in the theories as well as the gadgets. They also used More Capital Letters, which may or may not be a good thing.

9. Travel Was Fun. If you had the money, first class on a railway sounds like it beats any road trip I ever took. Plush seats, private compartments, and great dining when you stop, plus nobody would be talking on their cell phone. Likewise, I’d much rather cross the ocean by boat than by plane if I could go in luxury. Sure, it’s slower, but that brings me to my next point…

8. Life Was Slower.  Which is weird, because I am not a patient woman—ask anyone. But maybe that means it would do me good to go to a time and place where I had to slow down and take it easy. Maybe I’d take more in, relax a little, and be better for it. Sounds nice, anyhow.

7. Food. Again, this is one of those things that depends on having money. But if you did…wow. I’ve seen some menus from the time. Meat. Cream. Pastries that defy the imagination. I would explode, but I would enjoy myself until I did.

6. You’re a Time Traveler.  In itself, that’s pretty cool. You can try and change the past; if you can’t change the past, you can always make strangely knowing predictions and impress young men/women; and you can always hope to run into David Tennant.

5. The Clothes (Women). Oh my God, the clothes—and the reasons to wear them. In my daily life, it’s hard not to just wander around in jeans and a turtleneck, and while that’s good in its way, I’d love to have some motivation to make myself all pretty and have tea, or go dancing, or similar.

4. Dancing. Yes, people dance today. I do it myself, and it’s fun—and the ratio of men to women in most dancing groups my age is not great. Back in the 1800s, men who danced were not rare and majestic creatures like the noble…I’ve run out of metaphor here, but you get my point.

3. Active Recreation. Or at least different recreation. I like video games as well as the next geek girl, but it would be nice to sing for fun, or dance, or ride horses or row boats—and to have those things be regular amusements rather than once-in-a-while novelties.

2. Meeting Future Famous People. Darwin. Dickens.  Tennyson. Eliot. You could have harsh words with Freud, if you wanted, and maybe set him straight about a few things. Why not?

1. The Clothes (Men). Insofar as I have recently been a single young woman, and insofar as the baseball cap dude-bro look does not flatter one single person ever, and neither does the cartoon-t-shirt neckbeard look…I would so not mind an era when the average guy wore a nice suit regularly. Nope. Would not mind that at all.

  1. It sounds like English but you’ve no idea what is being said. This is called old English. It even looks funny written out.
  2. The buildings look really funny and quaint. It’s like you’re back in some medieval village themepark.
  3. Everywhere you look you see and smell horses. Phew. Stinky. (They didn’t have pick up your horse manure laws back then like they do now with dog poop.)
  4. People stare at your clothes, makeup, shoes, and funny hairstyle. You whore! Oh wait --- there’s the really enlightened hero to the rescue. Stick you’re tongue out at all those small minded folks and go “Nah nah nah” that will really wind them up!
  5. Men and women alike are appalled by your ill manners and forwardness. Shoot, have they never heard of the 21st century? Oh wait that’s right, they haven’t!
  6. Instead of flipping on a switch for light, you’re required to light a candle. Better have matches on your person... well that or a highly badged ex-girl scout hiding under the bed.
  7. Got boots? You’re going to need them to get around because roads are unpaved and mucky nine times out of ten, unless they’re cobbled and then your boots will insulate your feet from the hard stones.
  8. The bathroom is a pot. Where’s the toilet? When does that get invented again? You might have to wait a long while. (Conveniently forgets to mention that toilet paper isn’t around either, whistles innocently and walks away.)
  9. Your teeth look nicer than anybody else’s. If you were back in your own time you know a good dentist you could recommend to get their teeth fixed. In the meantime, they all stare at your shiny choppers.
  10. You haven’t been able to find anything proper to brush your teeth with and your breath is starting to get funky. Unfortunately for you the evil villain with even worst breath than your beloved dog Charlie’s halitosis thinks your breath is like a fresh rose compared to all the other ladies around. On second thought, you might go back to the present and strangle your dentist.
  11. Your sexy enlightened hero thinks protection means one of two things: pulling out before coming or one of those sheep skin condoms with bows to secure them in place. How you long for a normal box of prophylactics size extra extra large!
  12. The medical help… not so great. You do not want to get pregnant in the past because of the high mortality rates in giving birth. Not to mention they thought babies could eat solids and the wet nursemaids probably soaked a cloth in dirty slightly milky water when feeding your kid. If you’re kid doesn’t breastfeed he’s going to get formula and Gerber’s baby food!

A Cottage by the Sea by Ciji Ware is being reissued -- it is a good choice for reissue for those of us, like me, who never read it the first time -- with some

new material on brain function, chemistry, and recent findings in the scientific literature about the power of our minds to make us sick or well.

This book is an interesting mix of genres -- romance, romantic suspense, gothic romance, possible time travel, and possible past life experiences.  Hypnosis figures into it also.

Where past, present, and future collide...

Blythe Barton Stowe has fled to Cornwall to heal from a nasty, public divorce from her successful Hollywood husband.  He was unfaithful to her in the most egregious way, with her sister, who is now pregnant with the child her husband refused to conceive with her.  Blythe had been an important part of their successful movie team in her own right, but the way she was treated in the divorce proceedings did not grant her that.

The saving grace is that even her lawyer helps her stay far from the limelight -- which shows the kind of loyalty Blythe inspires.  Immediately this gave me insight into her character.

Cornwall is where her family line began, or so the story has been told her.  So it seems a natural place for her to go to heal her wounds.  She is understandably angry, hurt, and wanting a kind of revenge that she refuses to nurse.  The disloyalty of her sister and her then-husband, now -ex, is more than she can bear, made more so because of his immediate remarriage upon the divorce.  And you can imagine the field day the paparazzi are having at her expense.

Once she gets to the wild coastline in Cornwall, unusual things begin to happen.  She finds herself pulled back into the past on more than one occasion, when she touches the glass of a genealogy chart.  Some of the past life happenings (or life in the past) were scary to me, not knowing where they will lead.  It seems as though she is living out some kind of karmic present life, which is different from the past, but seems to stem from it.

Along the way, she falls in love with the owner of the estate she is living on (which also happens to be the family estate she comes from.)

A lot of information is given about brain function in situations of complex grieving, but it never crosses into didactism.  It just seems part of the story.  This is a feat in itself and shows what a good writer Ware is.

While several of the reviewers on the cover mention staying up all night to finish reading the book, I read it more slowly than some I read, in order to savor the story and its environs.  At the same time, this was because of the gothic nature of it.  I wasn't sure where it was going or if I'd like to know.  This also made it more difficult for me, because I wanted to know where it was going and I wanted to get there faster.

Generally I do not read historical romance (and the historical part was not particularly romantic, it was more tragic and involved a triangle of sorts or a quadrangle and this put it into the gothic category, with the steep clifts, etc.)  I was never quite sure if Blythe would decide to end it all, not necessarily because she was led that way, but because her leaping into the past was making her question her sanity, to a degree.  And it is interesting that one of the characters in the past does commit suicide and is not in his right mind when he does it.  And there is a suspected death/suicide which didn't in reality happen.

If you like an interesting story, with the need to suspend reality to a degree, and you like gothic romances, even a modern one, this book is for you. It was a very interesting read with well developed characters, including a child and another woman who desires to become the estate owner's wife.  There is also a nice settling of the differences with her ex-husband, made easier because she was now in love with another man.  It was definitely a good read, albeit sometimes difficult to read.  It is a thinking woman's romance, not escapism.  It deals with complex issues in an interesting way.

The Highlander's Touch is the third novel in the series of Highlanders by Karen Marie Moning. It is darker than the rest, but provides the ground work for four of the next novels.

Enter Lisa, a woman from the 21st century who is too nosy for her own good. Touching an ancient artifact, she finds herself stumbling back in time 700 years prior into ancient Scotland. But the thing is, and how romantically-novel-typical, Lisa falls 700 years back into the private bed chamber of Highland Laird Circenn. His nickname is "Sin," believe it or not.

But nothing is as sweaty, sexy and frustrating as it seems, for Circenn has a secret; a very dark, deep secret.

Lisa, torn between anger and lust, left an ill mother behind when she fell back in time and that one factor pushes her not only to push Circenn away, but to find a way back to her century. Not having that Circenn is determined to not only keep her in his century, but help her let go of all the anger and bottled up emotions ready to consume her.

There are two problems: Circenn does not know how to return Lisa to her century and the 'person' that does...well, Circenn isn't speaking to him, as they got into a rather interesting arguement.

Three guesses as to of whom we speak?

Adam Black, ladies, the fabulous Dark Fae himself, Adam Black!

But it gets better - Adam holds the key to Circenn's secret. Actually, Adam is the reason for Circenn's secret and it is worth reading to learn. The story builds up, and the tension between the two lead male characters reaches various levels of intelligence, humor, respect and spite.

What I absolutely love about this novel, is not the typical boy meets girl, girl meets boy, girl hates boy, boy tries to woo girl, girl whacks boy so on and so forth.

No, I dare say my favorite parts are the exchanges, as few as they are, between Circenn and Adam. Not only are they entertaining, but these key conversations, will help readers understand what is to come in the next four books.

The Highlander's Touch is truly a joy to read.  Karen Marie Moning is on target and her Highlander novels only get better from here.

This three hour BBC miniseries is just precious. It’s lighthearted, humorous, and perfect. Pride and Prejudice is revisited and reintroduced. Lost in Austen pays homage to Jane Austen’s original masterpiece while reinventing it. My friend, who is not a Pride and Prejudice fan—blasphemous I know!—loved this film. My other friend, who is a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice, to the point of being a purist, loved it also. Two endorsements right there! Make that three as it has mine also!

It starts with the heroine, a representative for all modern women, reading the classic tale. She has read it so many times, she can say it by heart, practically see herself there at Pemberley running to Darcy—wait hold up!

Amanda Price thinks she’s going crazy what with Elizabeth Bennet showing up in her bathroom and all. It is just one more sign of impending institutionalization. Really, how could a fictional character appear in her bathroom? The lives of those in Georgian England are made up after all… right?

When a wall opens up in Amanda’s bathroom and Elizabeth affirms it is her house on the other side, Amanda can’t resist stepping through. Like Alice, Amanda has gone through the rabbit hole and is trapped in Wonderland. The door swings shut behind her, but Amanda is filled with only a slight trepidation as she descends into the madness that is the Bennet house right at the beginning of the story.

What follows is a fabulous, wonderful, delicious story of a modern girl trying to make the story happen only to mess it up. Every time Amanda attempts to fix things, it gets worse. Some end up married to the wrong person, new background on characters is revealed, and more. Who could imagine blustering Mrs. Bennett as a ball-buster? One of the things that I loved was how Wickham is redeemed in this version. How? Watch and find out!

I’ve been told that the American version is missing a scene where Amanda is singing. I noticed a jerky transition where it should have occurred. There are also a few minor things left out, so I’ve been told. I wish they hadn’t taken it out, I mean once you’re at three hours, what’s another fifteen or so minutes right? Anyway, it was marvelous. Get it from your library or buy a copy – you’ll love it!

PS: Elliot Cowan, who plays Mr. Darcy, in looks is a cross between Colin Firth and Heath Ledger. Yum! His wet white shirt scene... double yum! Take a look:

It's been awhile since I've come across a series of books that I can honestly say I love, especially, from a genre that I do not commonly read. But that's the beauty of Karen Marie Moning's Highlander series: it defies the ordinary and jumps head on into the extraordinary.

Set, in mostly, throughout the 1500s shifting in between modern times, the seven books center around seven incredible heroes. From twins Daegus and Drustan, to warriors Grimm, Circenn, Cian and Hawk, to the 'abso-freakin-lutely' stunning black fairy (fae) Adam, the series is full of intense story lines that cut across history, time and space.

Whether you enjoy fantasy, science-fiction, romance, fiction, action, adventure or mystery, there is a little bit of everything. Most book sellers classify the series as "Paranormal/Time-Travel Romance." The series really reminds me of Stardust and Harry Potter in the sense that the author takes multiple facets of mythology and history combining them to make her own margarita concoction.

For example, Drustan is a Highlander, yes, but he also has the ability to shift through time, was possessed by the 13 Darkest Druid beings, and is a Druid himself. Sounds more like Joss Whedon's Angel the more I think about it.  Or take for example, Grimm, a Highland warrior with extraordinary powers who has the ability to turn into a Berserk, a raging human beast of exquisitely irreconcilable power bred to destroy.

As a series, the books are mind-blowing, but like everything else in life, there is good and bad. Individually, some of the books are far better than others. Hands-down the best book in the entire series is The Dark Highlander, the worst is Beyond the Highland Mist and the one that disappoints, for the direction it takes, is the The Immortal Highlander which brings back Adam Black (aka Puck aka "the Fool" aka The Black Fairy/Fae).

darkhighlanderOne of the most interesting characters brought to life is Aoibheal, the Queen of the Fae. She's sexy, alluring, smart, wicked, spiteful, playful, yet, very firm in her beliefs and way of life. It's through her and Adam that most of the issues throughout the seven books occur. Well, it's through Adam most of the issues occur, it's through Aoibheal that the problems are fixed. Together, these two characters add a stream of sensual humor that is unique and brands Karen Marie Moning's style as an author.

In Victorian times the emphasis on women and men was of being courteous, proper and reserved, yet in society that didn't sit well with many of the people of the day, especially the well off and super rich who held lavish balls and parties at their huge estates where who knows what would happen. From that tales of debauchery and excess began to surface from the staid and held back populace. Somehow or other, being proper wasn't the norm for most - sex was on the minds of many folks and it came out in the writings of the time from several writers.

In this compilation of 15 stories, sex is at the forefront of these writers’ minds, yet where would we be without it, or them.

Human Powered by Teresa Noelle Roberts pens a revolutionary tale of strong, woman designer Claire, who along with Doctor Lowell are a formidable team at designing and building new technology, at least for Victorian times. The two of them are close, perhaps improperly close for a married woman, but he arouses thoughts in her mind that haven't come up in years, of his scent, his manly musk, and it drives her wild, as it will the reader.

The Servant Question by Janine Ashbless has problems with her robot servant, one of the best from the Tulliver Tireless Housemaid range, and needs a careful hand to help repair her - enter Mr Tulliver himself who is only too happy to oblige. For those who like the surprise ending, this one has it, and it will be unforgettable.

Like in Gotta Have It, another anthology of erotic and deeply sensual stories, Carnal Machines has enough for the discerning reader to get interested in as there are so many aspects of steampunk and the rich Victorian settings to choose from. This compilation has it all, time travel, unusual robots, ruthless gentlemen, and depraved designers. Far from being a series of stories about the staid Victorians, these are told from the perspective of what the characters are thinking inside, all their proper ways are gone and only the unbridled passion can be seen.

I would advise anyone interested in erotic stories to get a copy of this as it is magical, gripping and is different in every way – make way for the new steampunk erotica.

Of Two Minds is a very deep book for kids. As an adult how it ends leads to quite an interesting train of thought I’m not sure young children will catch. This is my second time reading it. I remembered enjoying it thoroughly when I read it back in middle school. I can’t honestly say one way or another if I caught the concept revealed at the end of the book back then. I enjoyed it just as much this time around as an adult.

Lenora is a young teenage princess from a people who all have the power to create whatever they want. To imagine it is to make it be. She doesn’t understand why it’s law not to create worlds and change things to suit your will. Why were people afraid to change the color of their hair or imagine bright pink puppies?

After one incident too many her parents decide to marry her off to Prince Coren. They feel it will ground her, get her head out of her fantasies and make her a sensible woman. To that end they even plan to set a full brigade (4K-11K men) to think her solidly on the island she and Coren will make their future home, thus making escape impossible.

Angry, frightened, and confused Lenora escapes into somebody else’s world when making one of her own is impossible. Unfortunately, she also dragged the object of her distress with her. Coren, gangly redheaded and freckled, can’t even stand up without tripping over his feet. Could he be any more useless? It turns out he can – where’s his sense of adventure?

Surely something this real couldn’t be just somebody’s imagination. Could it?

Ah, but couldn’t it? Especially in light of her adventure with Coren. Is her story her own or the very imaginings of others?

After an interesting and in depth introduction by Danielle Bodnar about the science-fiction genre, its reasons for intriguing her to want to have a compilation of stories based in deep space, the reader is treat to four stories of how women cope with their lives in space starting with an unusual tale of love that knows no bounds.

In The Many Little Deaths of Cicilia Long by Shanna Germain, Shanna has Cicilia, a girl who has died after her girlfriend dumped her in a callous way. She has had many other deaths since then, and her mother never helped when she mentioned that she could have dated boys instead - the way many would think is she would have been dumped by men anyway, as there is nothing different from a woman dating another woman, or a man - there are players and cheats everywhere regardless of gender. Cicilia has a chance of finding happiness, but is it at a dear cost to her?

Fair as the Moon, Clear as the Sun by Laurel Waterford has a woman along with others on a mission to bring God's word to the masses in space, but all one girl can think of is getting clean after the heat gets too much for her, and being around such pretty girls, she finds it hard to concentrate on her purity and her devotions. One such girl is Mary who she forms a bond with deeper than the others she is met with, and one night she does something even she did not think would happen, they have a deep intimacy that she can never forget, or mention to the other girls or, for that matter, Father Graham.

Adrift by Kaysee Renee Robichaud opens on an intimate moment where two women have made love and this is the aftermath, the two of them laid in bed relaxing, contemplating. Lydia and Adrianne, subordinate and captain have shared her bed, and are both explorers in deep space wanting some time out from their chores, and the command of the ship and Lydia wants to spend more time with her, yet there is little chance of that even though they have just found each other - what can she do to make their relationship more than a one night stand?

Unfolding Her Wings by Elizabeth Black has Sun, a woman who is in the months before she has a baby, known as Parent 1 her partner, Gatria Parent 2. She misses her, yet has an open relationship where she introduces other women to their bed. Sun has all the problems a new mother would; the morning sickness, fainting spells and cravings for food she would never have contemplated eating before. This story is a sensual one where her lover, Shira gives her the most pleasure before they return to normality again. Though they have their intimacy, she still wants Gatria to return to her, as she is starting to see the world that has been built around them as a form of confinement, and she desires more than anything to spread her wings and explore.

And with all kinds of people in them, mainly women who love other women, there is a sensuality factor that brings the question of prejudice out there for the readers to find out about, and what can be as intriguing as that?
