Review: My Forbidden Desire by Carolyn Jewel

arcrev1

My Forbidden Desire starts with Harsh (from the first novel) and Alexandrine reconnecting. They are brother and sister. Alexandrine has been certain of Harsh's death for years, she's resentful for his sudden presence and insistence she needs protection from an evil mage... who just happens to be her real father.

Xia, a secondary character in My Wicked Enemy, is a newly freed fiend and the one charged with protecting Alexandrine. When Carolyn said she had refashioned bad boy Xia into a hero I knew I had to read his story! His intense hate, eagerness to kill, and desire to give out pain would be hard to overcome for any writer. Even more so when you planned to pair him up with someone who Xia considers his enemy, no matter how harmless. In my opinion, Carolyn has done a phenomenal job revealing the witch hater’s inner good qualities. Xia is very easily worth the price of the book.

Alexandrine Marit as a heroine is very likeable... despite being a witch. She possesses a great amount of unselfishness, though she has to work for it. The talisman she has found is putting a number on her similar to Golem’s reaction around the one ring in The Lord of the Rings. Her self-sacrifices pile up throughout the novel – if I were to list them it would seem ridiculous, but I assure it is not. Simply put it is quite the only way to prove her character to Xia.

It took me a while to get into this book. The first chapter or two was pretty rough. I started and stopped twice before finally overcoming the strangeness of the novel's set up. As with Carolyn’s other novels, once you are involved in the story you simply can’t put it down!

Review: The Greek’s Royal Mistress by Jane Porter

guestreview

By: Cara Lynn, guest reviewer

This is a book I really enjoyed. Chantal Thibaudet is a princess, but leading an unhappy life. Her marriage was loveless (and included physical abuse, so be warned) but she is now widowed with a four year old daughter. Her in-laws are power hungry, including a pre-nup that basically holds her daughter captive while forbidding her to remarry. The world sees her as glamorous, which she is, and doesn't see the negatives.

But life is about to change. Returning home by airplane in very rough turbulence she is befriended by Demetrius Mantheakis, who has been hired, unbeknownst to her, to be her bodyguard because her life has been threatened. The plane goes down; they begin an affair; she finds out he was hired -- and her life is in danger.

How are they going to protect her from a crazy person -- who might even be one of the inlaws?

He takes her to his private island where the villagers are completely loyal to him, and he is able to ensure her safety until they get a better handle on the enemy.

How is she going to keep her love for Demetrius, who also loves her, without losing her daughter in light of the pre-nup.

All's well that ends well. Love finds a way.

I rate it 3.5 stars.

Get into Bed with Roxanne St. Claire (Author Interview)

authorinterview9

Keira: Good morning everyone! Today we have a very special guest and a giveaway. Please join me in welcoming Roxanne St. Claire to the blog!

Roxanne: First of all, thank you SO much for inviting me to do this interview!  I love the blog and how much you clearly love our genre.

Susan: For readers who are unfamiliar with your Bullet Catcher series, who are the Bullet Catchers?

Roxanne: The Bullet Catchers series consists of eight novels and two novellas.  Each one stands alone as an individual romantic suspense adventure, but many of the characters reoccur over the books and each has their own story.  The Bullet Catchers organization is an elite group of bodyguards, investigators, security specialists and all around brilliant, hot crime fighters run by a former CIA operative named Lucy Sharpe.

Keira: Bodyguard romance – be still my heart. What do you think is most appealing about bodyguard romance

Roxanne: Who doesn’t want to be protected by a fearless, sexy, smart, resourceful, gorgeous (did I mention sexy?) guy who is willing to die for you?  I’ve no doubt that’s the timeless and  universal appeal of the bodyguard romance.

Keira: What qualities must every Bullet Catcher have? What makes them unique heroes?

Roxanne: In every story, a Bullet Catcher is given an assignment that will test them physically and emotionally, so the hero (it is usually the hero, although there have been two stories with female Bullet Catchers as the heroine) has to strong on the outside and the inside.  He (or she) has to make split second decisions, face ruthless villains, and solve complex crimes…and he (or she) has to navigate the treacherous seas of love that they think they don’t want or need…but can’t live without.

Keira: You’ve written and published 25 books so far, of which 8 (+2 novellas) are Bullet Catcher stories. How do you come up with all the plots? Is it hard for you to keep it fresh?

Roxanne: Ideas are easy – execution is a bear!  The concept of the Bullet Catchers has a built-in “danger and romance” element that is at the heart of every book I write.  The challenge is to keep it fresh, of course, give each character memorable and appealing traits (and some flaws, yes, they must have those) and craft a non-stop story that continually ups the stakes and increases the passion.  It’s not easy, but usually it is fun.  Sometimes, it is harrowing and I want to weep until I get the story just write.

Keira: What do you like best about writing romantic suspense?

Roxanne: I like the mix of sensuality and danger, and how things are constantly “at the edge” for the characters.  But it does complicate a love story, and usually the plots have to unfold over a very short period of time, so it’s difficult to make the romance believable.

Keira: How do you define love?

Roxanne: Complete and utter trust combined with toe-curling attraction and a willingness to do anything – absolutely anything – to protect and save the relationship and the other person.

Keira: What do you think makes a great sex scene?

Roxanne: Conflict and plenty of it.  I try to end every sex/love scene with a twist of precisely the thing that makes what they just did a HUGE mistake.  Then they have to work through that.

Keira: Do you read what you write? Is suspense romance your favorite genre to read?

Roxanne: I do read, but I read very little romantic suspense.  I should read more and I try to, but I also like to read YA, straight romance, some thrillers, and nonfiction.  When I’m deep into a book, it’s hard to read anything at all because, frankly, I’m too tired and when I’m done writing, I just want to hang with my family and watch TV.

Jane: Will there be more Bullet Catcher books?

Roxanne: I honestly don’t know.  Right now, they are on hiatus as I write a spin off series for a new publisher.  Called The Guardian Angelinos, this series is about an extended family of renegade crimefighters based in Boston.  It will be similar to the Bullet Catchers (and may have some overlapping Bullet Catcher characters as the Angelinos are distant cousins of Johnny Christiano, the hero of Take Me Tonight) but I think the new series will be a little bit grittier, and the stories will have higher “save the world” kind of stakes.  I’ve turned in the first one and am currently writing the second.  The series will launch next fall, and I’m really excited to see what my new publisher, Grand Central, does with the packaging and promotion.  I expect great things!

Keira: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Roxanne: Just that I’d love to introduce your readers to a Bullet Catcher!  I’ll give one commenter the Bullet Catcher book of her choice!  To see the complete list and read excerpts (and bios/pics of the hotties) go to my website: www.roxannestclaire.com.  Leave a comment (or question – I’ll answer anything!) at the end of this interview and we’ll pick a winner!!!

And thank you!

Giveaway Ends: December 17th, 2009 and is open to all readers worldwide.

Review: A Weaver Wedding by Allison Leigh

bookreview1

Part of the Famous Families line, A Weaver Wedding, is littered with names. Most likely they are characters of past and future novels all dealing with the Clay family. By the time you’re introduced to them all your head is spinning. It’s easier to keep the names down and the interaction between the leads up.

If you’re good with names and one time introductions this won’t be a problem, but I can’t follow that many characters. Well, that’s a lie, I could, but I don’t care to in a short novel. If I’m going to get lots of names dropped it better be in a long novel or series.

It was predictable, bubblegummy, and not overly compelling. It needed meat, sustenance, something to truly be endearing.

Besides the name dropping, I did not like how the hero and heroine got together in the beginning. Did she have to be drunk?

I understand it’s contemporary but I just don’t understand why drunkenness is needed to urge a modern woman into bed with a handsome man or why a suitably charming, upright, dependable hero would agree to sleeping with a drunk heroine when he’s so virtuous in character.

I figure if they were smart enough for condoms, she should be smart enough to avoid getting to the point of slurring drunkenness even if her brother stood her up on her birthday. He should have been more upright and not taken advantage. I don’t care that he’s wanted to act on his attraction to her for the past five or so years. I care that he looks out for her.

Which brings us to the ironic part of this review as the hero is the heroine’s bodyguard.

Review: Going Down Hard by Tawny Weber

bookreview

Going Down Hard is the sequel to Coming on Strong and follows Belle’s best friend and Mitch’s cousin as they stumble into love. Half suspense – half sexy as sin, Tawny Weber puts out another top notch romance. Weber spins words like a top notch DJ spins tunes. She has a delightfully witty tone that is sassy and spunky; just like the heroine.

Sierra is receiving doctored photographs in the mail. Sexual in nature, they were at first funny because they were so terrible, but then the pervert got good at it. The creepiness just gets creepier as Sierra’s head gets attached to more and more degrading photos. The cops can’t do anything at the moment and with Sierra’s background they’re not likely too. Now the stalker is even threatening to ruin Eventually Yours, the business Sierra and Belle started, by sending pictures to their newest client Family.

That’s when Belle and Sierra decide it’s time to call in the big guns. Reece is an ex-military Kentucky cowboy with his own business in security. He takes the case for many reasons, one of them being Sierra herself. Their last encounter (in Coming on Strong) has left his head spinning and he wants more. Sparks fly, but Reece is persistent in getting behind that tough as nails exterior Sierra exudes to find the real woman.

Despite the heavy topic, I was amused and laughing all the way through. Here’s an example of some of the dialogue and admittedly my favorite piece:

“What reason? What proof?" She would have poked him again except he still held her hand captive.
When he didn't immediately reply, she accused, "You had nothing. Admit it. Your jealousy meter dinged and you pulled on the Macho Man cape and set out to prove you could be a total idiot."

Weber’s writing is sure to rile you up and make you gasp…

Fabio Search: The Rock

This man is 260 pounds of pure muscle. Third-generation WWE Superstar, short-time professional football player, and Hollywood actor he is one of the most recognized celebrities. Dwayne Johnson is the Rock. He ranked #61 on VH1's 100 Hottest Hotties, which I think is such a shame because the Rock could give any woman heart palpitations from a mile away.

However, if you think this gorgeous hunk could protect you from spiders with all his rippling pectorals you’ll be surprised to learn that he has a fear of them. But while this domestic task may be beyond him, he could certainly cook you one of his family favorites in the kitchen!

We have seen him in several well known movie titles, the first being the The Scorpion King. He’s currently filming 3 for release in 2009. Seeing him in Get Smart was fun as the Rock always wanted to be a villain in a James Bond movie, and Get Smart is a great spoof of the Bond films.

In the past he's been nominated the worst actor for the Razzie awards and finally received one for his part in Doom. I say to this - who cares? Show some more skin! We love the Rock because he's gorgeous. If others think he has the acting range of well a rock, that's their problem. He'll sell tickets to any movie he's in and that's the bottom line. I also think he could sell a ton of books too - yum!

The Rock is married to Dany Garcia and has a daughter, Simone Alexandra. The young girl in Game Plan is not his daughter for those wanting to know.
