Part of the Famous Families line, A Weaver Wedding, is littered with names. Most likely they are characters of past and future novels all dealing with the Clay family. By the time you’re introduced to them all your head is spinning. It’s easier to keep the names down and the interaction between the leads up.

If you’re good with names and one time introductions this won’t be a problem, but I can’t follow that many characters. Well, that’s a lie, I could, but I don’t care to in a short novel. If I’m going to get lots of names dropped it better be in a long novel or series.

It was predictable, bubblegummy, and not overly compelling. It needed meat, sustenance, something to truly be endearing.

Besides the name dropping, I did not like how the hero and heroine got together in the beginning. Did she have to be drunk?

I understand it’s contemporary but I just don’t understand why drunkenness is needed to urge a modern woman into bed with a handsome man or why a suitably charming, upright, dependable hero would agree to sleeping with a drunk heroine when he’s so virtuous in character.

I figure if they were smart enough for condoms, she should be smart enough to avoid getting to the point of slurring drunkenness even if her brother stood her up on her birthday. He should have been more upright and not taken advantage. I don’t care that he’s wanted to act on his attraction to her for the past five or so years. I care that he looks out for her.

Which brings us to the ironic part of this review as the hero is the heroine’s bodyguard.

Review: My Forbidden Desire by Carolyn Jewel

arcrev1

My Forbidden Desire starts with Harsh (from the first novel) and Alexandrine reconnecting. They are brother and sister. Alexandrine has been certain of Harsh’s death for years, she’s resentful for his sudden presence and insistence she needs protection from an evil mage… who just happens to be her real father.

Xia, a secondary character in My Wicked Enemy, is a newly freed fiend and the one charged with protecting Alexandrine. When Carolyn said she had refashioned bad boy Xia into a hero I knew I had to read his story! His intense hate, eagerness to kill, and desire to give out pain would be hard to overcome for any writer. Even more so when you planned to pair him up with someone who Xia considers his enemy, no matter how harmless. In my opinion, Carolyn has done a phenomenal job revealing the witch hater’s inner good qualities. Xia is very easily worth the price of the book.

Alexandrine Marit as a heroine is very likeable… despite being a witch. She possesses a great amount of unselfishness, though she has to work for it. The talisman she has found is putting a number on her similar to Golem’s reaction around the one ring in The Lord of the Rings. Her self-sacrifices pile up throughout the novel – if I were to list them it would seem ridiculous, but I assure it is not. Simply put it is quite the only way to prove her character to Xia.

It took me a while to get into this book. The first chapter or two was pretty rough. I started and stopped twice before finally overcoming the strangeness of the novel’s set up. As with Carolyn’s other novels, once you are involved in the story you simply can’t put it down!

Review: Going Down Hard by Tawny Weber

bookreview

Going Down Hard is the sequel to Coming on Strong and follows Belle’s best friend and Mitch’s cousin as they stumble into love. Half suspense – half sexy as sin, Tawny Weber puts out another top notch romance. Weber spins words like a top notch DJ spins tunes. She has a delightfully witty tone that is sassy and spunky; just like the heroine.

Sierra is receiving doctored photographs in the mail. Sexual in nature, they were at first funny because they were so terrible, but then the pervert got good at it. The creepiness just gets creepier as Sierra’s head gets attached to more and more degrading photos. The cops can’t do anything at the moment and with Sierra’s background they’re not likely too. Now the stalker is even threatening to ruin Eventually Yours, the business Sierra and Belle started, by sending pictures to their newest client Family.

That’s when Belle and Sierra decide it’s time to call in the big guns. Reece is an ex-military Kentucky cowboy with his own business in security. He takes the case for many reasons, one of them being Sierra herself. Their last encounter (in Coming on Strong) has left his head spinning and he wants more. Sparks fly, but Reece is persistent in getting behind that tough as nails exterior Sierra exudes to find the real woman.

Despite the heavy topic, I was amused and laughing all the way through. Here’s an example of some of the dialogue and admittedly my favorite piece:

“What reason? What proof?” She would have poked him again except he still held her hand captive.
When he didn’t immediately reply, she accused, “You had nothing. Admit it. Your jealousy meter dinged and you pulled on the Macho Man cape and set out to prove you could be a total idiot.”

Weber’s writing is sure to rile you up and make you gasp…

Review: The Greek’s Royal Mistress by Jane Porter

guestreview

By: Cara Lynn, guest reviewer

This is a book I really enjoyed. Chantal Thibaudet is a princess, but leading an unhappy life. Her marriage was loveless (and included physical abuse, so be warned) but she is now widowed with a four year old daughter. Her in-laws are power hungry, including a pre-nup that basically holds her daughter captive while forbidding her to remarry. The world sees her as glamorous, which she is, and doesn’t see the negatives.

But life is about to change. Returning home by airplane in very rough turbulence she is befriended by Demetrius Mantheakis, who has been hired, unbeknownst to her, to be her bodyguard because her life has been threatened. The plane goes down; they begin an affair; she finds out he was hired — and her life is in danger.

How are they going to protect her from a crazy person — who might even be one of the inlaws?

He takes her to his private island where the villagers are completely loyal to him, and he is able to ensure her safety until they get a better handle on the enemy.

How is she going to keep her love for Demetrius, who also loves her, without losing her daughter in light of the pre-nup.

All’s well that ends well. Love finds a way.

I rate it 3.5 stars.

Fabio Search: The Rock

This man is 260 pounds of pure muscle. Third-generation WWE Superstar, short-time professional football player, and Hollywood actor he is one of the most recognized celebrities. Dwayne Johnson is the Rock. He ranked #61 on VH1’s 100 Hottest Hotties, which I think is such a shame because the Rock could give any woman heart palpitations from a mile away.

However, if you think this gorgeous hunk could protect you from spiders with all his rippling pectorals you’ll be surprised to learn that he has a fear of them. But while this domestic task may be beyond him, he could certainly cook you one of his family favorites in the kitchen!

We have seen him in several well known movie titles, the first being the The Scorpion King. He’s currently filming 3 for release in 2009. Seeing him in Get Smart was fun as the Rock always wanted to be a villain in a James Bond movie, and Get Smart is a great spoof of the Bond films.

In the past he’s been nominated the worst actor for the Razzie awards and finally received one for his part in Doom. I say to this - who cares? Show some more skin! We love the Rock because he’s gorgeous. If others think he has the acting range of well a rock, that’s their problem. He’ll sell tickets to any movie he’s in and that’s the bottom line. I also think he could sell a ton of books too - yum!

The Rock is married to Dany Garcia and has a daughter, Simone Alexandra. The young girl in Game Plan is not his daughter for those wanting to know.
