Summary: The Secret Life of Cowboys Trilogy, Book Two

Her Plan

Veronica (Ronnie) DelVecchio is determined to thwart Dylan Garahan’s advances and avoid the family curse. The one about DelVecchio women falling for Irishmen only to end up carrying not one, but “two” buns in the oven. Nuh-uh! No way. She will remain strong! Even if he is the sexiest tall drink of water in all of Texas.

Is Not Working

What with Dylan repairing her shop and her cooking at his ranch, Ronnie’s resolve is fading faster than the paint on the cars at a junkyard. Who is she kidding, though? The man dances/strips at the Lucky Star. Hello! His body can’t be resisted. By anyone. Will Ronnie be quick enough to duck when he tries to lasso her heart, or will she realize that you can’t outrun a family curse?

Review: With Dylan I felt the characters’ emotional shifts happened too quickly and too often; throwing me out of the story. One second there’s pure rage, the next-there’s laughter. And I’ll admit, the humor was lost on me.

Too much testosterone is not necessarily a plus. The Garahan brothers (Tyler, Dylan and Jesse) have trouble verbalizing their feelings. That’s understandable. Some men aren’t very wordy or expressive. But the fact that they physically go to blows all the time? That was unappealing. To me.

The second half did seem more comfortable in its skin. And I did enjoy the idea of three brothers working hard to maintain the family ranch.

What I enjoyed: Dylan’s one-armed push-ups. Yum.

My Favorite Character: An elderly widow named Mavis. She’s a wonderful friend.

Spikes & Spurs Romance Series: Book Three

I’m as shocked as the next reader; I made it on Santa’s good list. Can you believe it? Oh. You can’t? Well…I did! And he fixed my busted review-o-meter. Whoo- Whee! I’ve really missed that ticking noise. Let’s have a look-see. Wow! It’s red, it’s steaming, and the pointer’s on the number five.

Summary: Liz Hanson, heroine, is a fortune teller who’s traveled all her life with her carnival family. She loves them very much and enjoys what she does, but has always felt an unrelenting desire to settle down. To own a house, and to just enjoy the stability that others seem to have. Which explains her speedy acceptance to Uncle Haskell’s offer. He’s giving her what she’s always wanted; her own home. Moving into Haskell’s place was an expected event, after all, she agreed to move in. What Hanson didn’t expect, was to run into her childhood crush, Raylen O’Donnell.

Raylen will awaken her womanly desires, and have her wanting to share her stability with him. Her carnival family on the other hand, insists her restless heart needs to travel. Liz is at a crossroads. Stay in Texas, or leave and travel.

Will Liz’s crystal ball foretell misery, or show her a happily-forever-after?

Review: If you’ve read a Carolyn Brown novel, then I’m just preaching to the choir, because you know how wonderful they are. But, if you haven’t, Darn Good Cowboy Christmas is the perfect place to start reading. Don’t fret new readers; Brown’s novels are stand-alones. She does a great job of cluing you in.

I really enjoyed all the heart-to-heart conversations between Liz and Blaze (who’s like a brother to her). During the dialogues I felt I was sitting next to the characters…listening. No, I wasn’t having auditory hallucinations (laughs). I simply meant the author writes them so expertly.

The story itself is touching and heartwarming. It’s about a woman finding the courage to follow her heart and realizing…that happiness means taking chances.

Recommendations: Recommended for all romance readers regardless of favorite subgenres. You’ll really enjoy it if you like the friends to lovers trope, happily-ever-afters, stories about meeting your soul-mate, and novels about rekindled love.

Cameos and Updates Galore: This Christmas is a cameo celebration. I spied with my little eye hunky Slade Luckadeau (hero from One Lucky Cowboy) with his granny Nellie and her sister Ellen. Jane (heroine also from One Lucky Cowboy) gets her fortune told. An update you won’t want to miss!

The author also updates us on Wil and Pearl, as well as Rye (Raylen’s brother). Because this is Raylen’s story his family plays front and center: sisters (Gemma and Colleen), brothers (Dewar and Rye), parents (Cash and Maddie), and his grandparents.

Lucy from Red's Hot Cowboy also pops into the Chicken Fried Café. She’s been one busy gal!

What’s Next? Book four, One Hot Cowboy Wedding, has a release date of April 2012; it’s the story of Jasmine and Ace. Someone’s going to Vegas, baby! And just you wait until you see the cover for this novel. Beautiful, I tell you. Absolutely. Beautiful!

Do you like to read a cowboy romance? Yes? Well this is the book for you!

Hope, is the town's former head cheerleader and homecoming queen. She finally decides to return home after sowing her wild oats in Hollywood, only to find that a twin sister she didn’t know existed has stepped into her shoes... or should I say love life? Hope’s dreams were shattered when Slade married her twin sister.

Colt, the town's bad boy is late for the wedding and figures the only thing he can do is kiss the bride. Hope yells for him to take his hands off her sister, but Slade has already gotten there and punched him for grabbing his new wife. Colt comes up swinging and punches Hope out.

It's a classic - he pursues, she evades, cat and mouse, tit for tat romance.

I'm going to classify this romance as enemies to lovers because Colt has pulled so many pranks on Hope that she feels he hates her. But is that really true? Shirlene, Colt’s sister, tells her he does it because he is so hung up on her and he feels he needs to torment her to get her attention.

You really need to read this captivating story to find out why Colt had a snarling hog with a tiara tattooed on his arm. And, why is there all of a sudden a shot-gun wedding and for who! This book is such an interesting read, with what a plot so realistic it could be an actually true story for many homecoming queens and town bad boys.

Lucky in Love is a riot. Brown had fun putting phrases together that read like classic stereotypical western and modern feisty romance rolled into one. You’ll find expressions like: “my hide tacked to the smokehouse door,” “she belongs like a horse apple in a church social punch bowl,” and “heartache bigger than Dallas” to name a few. They were probably my favorite part of the book and never failed to make me smile or laugh out loud when they appeared.

Anthony “Beau” Luckadeau is lucky at everything but not lucky in love. He plans to prove them all wrong by proposing to Amanda, though his heart has long been lost to Amelia Jiminez, a one night stand at his cousin’s wedding. When he does propose everyone forces a smile and shakes his hand but nobody is congratulating him (not that he notices) because Amanda is the worst wife Beau could have picked. She hates ranching, barns, his friends, his workers, his home, and his nickname. It’s not classy enough for her.

Amelia Jiminez on the other hand is none other than sassy Camellia “Milli” Torres. She’s in Oklahoma to help her Granny and Poppy out on their ranch while Poppy is healing from surgery. She and her toddler Katy would never have stepped a foot out of Texas if she’d known Beau was Poppy’s neighbor. If making him dance in the dirt under fire of a .22 rifle doesn’t force him to keep his distance nothing will… and part of her doesn’t want him to stay away which makes him all the more dangerous.

Spikes & Spurs Romance Series: Book Two

Summary: Pearl Richland (heroine) has an unquenchable thirst for partying. She’s the girl friend who always lends an ear and never says no to a party. At least that was status quo ante. After her Great-Aunt Pearlita passed away, things just aren’t the same. She inherited Pearlita’s Bates motel. O.k., not really. It’s called the Longhorn Inn and she’s the new owner, but it does resemble that motel from the scary movie. Running the 25 unit 50 year old motel is putting a huge damper on her social life. As a matter of fact, it’s not just dampened it, it’s killed it.

And so it was, until a hot cowboy named Wil Marshall (hero) requests a room. Pearl doesn’t know it yet, but he’s about to turn her whole world upside down. Then again…she’s about to do the same to his!

Review: Red's Hot Cowboy brought along plenty of side-splitting similes, witty retorts and new characters to fall in love with. A fun, often touching story about how love sometimes finds us under the most unusual circumstances. There were also some references of domestic abuse relating to Pearl’s employee and friend (Lucy). And I should tell you, when Luke gives Lucy his testimonial, I cried.

Book two may differ in plot and setting from the first in the series, but still delivers sassy independent women and the strong men fearless enough to cross their paths.

By the way, did I mention Pearl hears voices? Actually, she sometimes imagines what her great-aunt would’ve thought about her choices. Go on now; you know you want to hear Chris Young’s song, “Voices.”

Cameos: Thought bubble: How curious! Pearl has a pendant similar to Austin’s (two crossed pistols over angel wings). And yes, I do notice those things, lol.

I spied with my little eye, lots of Love Drunk Cowboy characters. There was the O’Donnell brothers (Rye, Raylen and Dewar), their sisters (Gemma and Colleen), their mother (Maddie), and Ace Riley. Ms. Brown also included updates on previous heroes and heroines, e.g., Sharlene and Holt. As well as Austin and Rye post-marriage. She gives us a six-month update on Austin you won’t want to miss!

Obituary: Pearlita Richland passes away.

Favorite Scenes:

Number 1: Room# 10 on New Year’s Eve, of course! Things get fun after eight shots of whiskey.

Number 2: December 24th at the Longhorn Inn. No one sleeps that night! That was an entertaining scene to say the least.

Favorite Characters: Wil, who’s my kinda cowboy! Gotta love a sexy dark-haired man with a Blake Shelton CD in his truck!

I absolutely LOVED Wil’s disgusting nieces (Janey and Mesa). They have enough spunk for 30 gals. I really wanted to see them in more scenes.

What’s Next? Book three, Darn Good Cowboy Christmas, I believe will release in October of 2011. Followed by One Hot Cowboy Wedding, April of 2012. I wouldn’t miss reading them for the world!

Recommendations: Please listen to Mi Vida Loca (My Crazy Life) by Pam Tillis.

Always been a city gal with a country heart. Always driving people nuts listening to my country CDs. So really, its old news the charms of rural life draw me like lemons to mason jars. When I get away from the city, I always head to the country.

Now how often have we heard, “The devil made me do it?” Uh-huh. Well, I’m going to just blame my recklessness on this author. O.k., maybe not her exactly, but her writing. I shouldn’t be blamed simply because the Spikes & Spurs Series spoke to my heart. Well…perhaps I’ll own up a little to being plumb-dumb for listening. Guess I should’ve covered my ears when it spoke. Had I done that though, I wouldn’t’ve had any fun.

During my latest get-away, I found myself getting close and personal with the wildlife, riding a mechanical bull (Yes, I stayed on for 8 seconds!), and buying new boots which I kicked-up and raised hell with.

I was B-A-D! But, if those kindly folk feel the need to gossip when I’m gone, that’s all-right. Wait `till next time! I’ll give `em more to add to their gossip files.

Thank you for inviting me back to Love Romance Passion to celebrate the release of Red's Hot Cowboy which hit the ground running last week. I’m glad folks are still reading about hot cowboys and sassy heroines because that’s what Red's Hot Cowboy has to offer. So thank you to all my readers who keep coming back for more and to Love Romance Passion for making me feel at home at their blog site!

And remember if you liked Love Drunk Cowboy (number 1 in the Spikes & Spurs series) and you like Red's Hot Cowboy when you read it, there are more hot cowboys and sassy heroines on the way. Darn Good Cowboy Christmas will be out in October; One Hot Cowboy Wedding in April 2012 and three more to follow after that.

Someone asked me if I had a recipe for creating the perfect cowgirl for my hunky sexy cowboys. I hadn’t thought about it like that but since cooking is one of my minor passions I expect that it could be described as a recipe.

So let’s create a perfect cowgirl, this time for Wil Marshall, a rancher up north of Henrietta, Texas. Maybe an excerpt here will let you know a little more about Wil so that you can understand the special job we’ll have in creating the perfect cowgirl to make him drop down on one knee.

He smiled and suddenly there was a whole orchestra behind the singer chanting about bad boys in Pearl’s head. He was bundled up in a worn leather bomber jacket with fleece lining that made his broad shoulders even wider and ended at a narrow waist, faded jeans that hugged a right fine butt that would’ve had her drooling if she hadn’t been so damn mad, and scuffed boots that made him a real cowboy and not the drugstore variety that was all hat and no cattle. His dog was sitting obediently beside him, looking up pitifully as if tattling on that abominable creature that had attacked him.

“Who in the hell is Delilah anyway, and what’s she got to do with all this commotion?” he asked in a deep Texas drawl.

“Delilah is my cat,” Pearl said.

“That is a good name for a she-devil like that thing. You got any rooms left for tonight? It looks like the parking lot is full, but the sign is still on.”

If only he could have had a high squeaky voice, but no, he had to be the complete bad boy package with that Texas drawl.

Okay, now that we’ve established that Wil is one sexy cowboy, let’s get busy and work see what we can do!

Preheat book to 500 degrees F. with a super hot cover that has a woman with gorgeous red hair and red boots. Add one sexy cowboy to hold her leg next to him and look at her like he could plant long lingering kisses on her lips.

Add a sassy attitude, a couple of extra measures of spunk, long red hair that begs for a man’s hands to touch it, green eyes and a determination to never, ever let a cowboy rope her into a dull life called marriage. Now stir that up and set it to one side.

Make a trip to the western wear store over in Nocona, Texas or the one in Wichita Falls and purchase some tight fittin’ jeans and a belt with a big silver buckle that will show off her rounded hips and small waist line. Look through the racks and find a nice tight T-shirt with some bling and glitter and yes, ma’am, one pair of red boots.

Now let Wil have a little taste and see if we’re making the right cowgirl. One little kiss…

He shut his eyes and leaned in for the kiss, barely connecting to her lips and sending a heat wave over the whole state when her damn cell phone caused her to jump backwards.

I do believe we got the temperature just about right when we heated up the front of that cover to 500 degrees.

He says that the raw dough tastes really good but now we’ve got to actually throw in some action to see if she’s going to be a real cowgirl or if she’s going back to those stiletto heels that she wore to her high powered corporate job.

So stir up the action. Give her some adverse situations while she’s getting used to those boots. Put her in a pickup truck and make sure there are lots of speed bumps in her pathway.

 The cowboy took two steps and pushed through the swinging doors at the end of the counter. “All I want is a room, Red.”

“You call me Red again, Mister, and you won’t need one. What you’ll need is a pine box and a preacher to read about you lyin’ down in green pastures,” she said.

I do believe she’s ready to face the world and capture her own cowboy now. What do you think? Do we need to add anything? Maybe some really hot green eyes and a few freckles across her nose?

We discussed sandalwood in The Smell of a Hero, now we’re going to talk about two other scents associated with romance heroes: leather and horse. If a hero doesn’t smell of sandalwood or another woodsy scent, he smells of rich leather and hot horse.

I guess that means… At base, all men are cowboys! Yum...

Oh and can we say ew on smelling like a horse? Nothing like the smell of hot sweaty horse flesh for your hero. Grimace. So why is it used as an indicator of manliness in romance? Because those who are horse lovers associate that scent with something else. They say a horse smells warm and earthy. Both words are indicators of comfort, trustworthiness, and wholesomeness.

Leather is a family of fragrance. You will find leather as a middle or base note in many fragrances. It’s a soft, deep, buttery sort of scent. In masculine fragrances it is often stronger--sharper.

Now, if you pull out the adjectives from both horse and leather you have a wealth of implied base descriptors for a hero. Rich. Hot. Comfort. Warm. Earthy. Trustworthy. Wholesome. Strong. Sharp. Soft. Deep. Buttery.

Are authors as guilty of attributing personality traits through the smells associated with their heroes? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Smell is a hard thing to describe because our olfactory sense is not very developed in comparison to other species. I can only think of two other descriptors for sexy men off the top of my head: patchouli and spicy. That doesn’t give authors a lot of leg room.

And real men like to smell masculine too. Their cologne must evoke a unique, cultured and classic feel. They must exude sexuality, power, strength, and confidence. Can we say yuminess? This means men gravitate toward woodsy, spicy, leathery, warm and earthy scents for themselves. Authors got it right.

Story: Channing Kinkaid’s western adventure is turning out to be a big flop because the cowboy she hitched herself too is a real possessive jerk… and married?! Appalled she’s determined to get the hell out of Dodge until professional cowboy Colby McKay propositions her with a threesome/moresome sexual adventure a girl would be foolish to pass up. The rules are simple – she’s there for them whenever they want her and she can’t question them about the pleasures they plan to bring her.

Review (Spoilers): I can’t decide if I want to give props and hose the fact that Channing and Colby wind up together sans Colby’s partners. It’s certainly original for this erotica subgenre, but I felt Colby was acting ridiculous at times. He does threesomes all the time and then because Channing’s involved it’s not nearly so palpable for him? On one hand it’s realistic but on the other hand what makes Channing the one to inspire the green monster?

I also felt bad for the “third” rodeo partner who was gay and participated in getting a blowjob from Channing because Colby told him too instead of just coming out and saying he was gay and wasn’t interested in her. I thought that was degrading especially since it is clear later in the book that Colby knew the guy was gay. The second partner is bisexual and likes being with women and with the third partner adding extra drama.

Finally, the first half of the novel didn’t do much for me for two reasons. The first is that Channing is introduced feeling insecure about her rather large breast size (which never comes up again after she wins a random wet T-shirt contest) and kind of introverted because of her meek behavior with her parents and then she becomes an expert sexy woman with no qualms telling them what she wants and talking dirty which is so at odds to the mental image I had from the first little bit and secondly because I didn’t feel there was any emotion involved other than the need to do it. The second half did have the emotion as it became more traditional romance with spicy erotica elements due to Colby's jealousy and desire to make Channing "just his." I think perhaps that should have been the focus all along.

The sex was certainly steamy, hot!

Summary: Faith Aldridge goes to Bramble, Texas, looking to find her sister, Hope, the twin she never knew she had. Except that the backwards town only sees Hope and they’re determined to hook “Hope” up with her old high school flame, Slate Calhoun. Now Slate knows there’s something off about “Hope” and he doesn’t think it’s because Hollywood took away her personality and attitude. He actually likes sweet shy feminine Faith, who is a total contrast to loud, brash, tomboy Hope. A small town hides big secrets and Faith is about to learn one she never expected and now the real Hope is headed home and she wants Slate for herself.

Mistaken Identity: I don’t know how a whole town can just not “get it” when Slate gets it right away. Faith acts nothing like Hope and her style of dress and speech is galaxies away from Hope’s as well as her accent. It’s not Texan. Hello! Other than that they’re the epitome of small town characters who are nice, and sometimes rowdy, interfering busybodies. I wouldn't mind moving there.

Review: You know its love when the heroine and reader think the guy has a nicer truck than he has a trailer. Slate’s not poor, but he’s not rich either. He’s a high school football coach. The heroine likes dogs, but could easily kill one by looking at it wrong; she’s that bad with them. She’s a computer programmer but desires to be a teacher. The two had good chemistry.

Recommended: For readers who love cowboys, twin mistaken identity plots, and heroines older than the usual late teens/early twenties.
