Heroine: 21 year old Alex Hill works as an interpreter. Between 17 and 21 she lived in a convent after her parents died because the mother superior was related to her (aunt). She has an irrational dislike (fear) of elevators.

Hero: Playboy Max Goodwin is a mining magnate in his mid 30s. He needs an interpreter for several weeks while he woos a new Japanese client. When they first meet he’s unimpressed but after a makeover this confirmed bachelor wants her in his bed.

Sour Grapes: Max demands Alex get a makeover to make her presentable for being around the events he’s meeting his client in to which she accepts with a lot of grace (though she quibbles over who will pay for the makeover) considering how insulting he was. Then immediately following her makeover he makes a scene with a comment demanding to know what had been done to her in a makeover. Now she was too pretty? WTF, jerk.

Review: The constant switching in thoughts from one paragraph to the next. It was a mental tennis match. The switches were too obvious and too immediate, sharing what one thinks or the other thinks about a situation instead of letting the narrative progress. It was distracting and ruined the reading experience of interpreting information. This book is an example why for so long getting into the hero’s head wasn’t on the table or until the end of the book for his “Oh crap - I’ve got to grovel now or lose her forever!” moment. The dialogue between them was so full of cheese that I rolled my eyes until I got dizzy.

Heroine: Widow Silence Hollingbrook is in a dire situation. To reclaim what she loves she must face the man who callously and cruelly used her to make a point that ruined her marriage. Only of course he doesn’t make things simple. Apparently there’s danger (evil Charlie Grady, the Vicar of Whitechapel) and wouldn’t you know, he’s the father of the baby girl she thought was an orphan.

Hero: River pirate “Charming” Mickey O’Connor is fiercely handsome but woefully unfeeling (or so he thinks, he takes quite good care of those he considers his). He climbed his way to the top of London’s dark and dangerous criminal underworld and has no intentions of falling back down. But when a danger from his past threatens to tear it all down, Mickey acts and once again his actions will prove to be Silence’s undoing.

Review: Scandalous Desires is not to be missed – pirate hero? Hello! It’s a beautifully written story with all the elements that I like including a seemingly heartless hero (he’s dragged into love, but once there he’s going to go all out). I love how Mickey is the engineer of his own romantic downfall – he wants Silence and to get to her he uses Mary Darling, a bastard daughter a whore claimed was his but he knows is not. He’ll keep Mary around because it means Silence will stay because she loves the girl. Of course he falls for both, poor man, haha. Silence and Mikey are enemies, but they aren’t, because Mikey doesn’t really want Silence as an enemy, but plays the part because of his plan to keep her by his side. The only thing left to say is that this is definitely one of the best books of the year!

“A good girl can be bad for one night… but can a bad boy be good for a lifetime…”

Bernadette has a very interesting job being the bodyguard for one of Texas’s most eligible bachelors, Jeremy. She is also responsible for taking care of her mother, who tends to be forgetful most of the time.

Bernadette has decided that she needs a different job, as she is tired of protecting an infuriating man who does what he wants when he wants without regard to anyone’s feelings. Women seem to come and go and this infuriates Bernadette. The two of them banter back and forth and somehow end up in bed with each other. Bernadette ends up leaving his employ and doesn’t tell him why, just lets him think that her boss with the security company is replacing her.

Eventually he ends up seeing her at a charity function, where she is a security guard and she is very pregnant. Apparently there was condom failure. She does tell him its his, and he talks her into moving into his home where she can have help when the doctor tells her she must stop working. He wants to get married and she is fighting it.

I recommend this book as it's very well written with a lot of humor and heart. Read this story to find out how a good girl and a bad boy take it to the next level.

For me to describe the reformed rake, I’d have to discuss his past behavior. As a rake (shortened version of rakehell), he was considered the epitome of the bad boy. A man whose immoral conduct would cause a kindly innocent lady to slap him soundly across the cheek. Not that he hadn’t been slapped by harlots and mistresses alike. Because he has. He’s just learned to consider it par for the course. He was known to gamble, drink, frequent gaming houses and brothels. The love 'em and leave 'em type. If you’ve heard the song, Womanizer by Britney Spears, that about sums it up nicely.

Our rake is a man typically found in historical novels and is sexy as all get out; has looks, charm, money, and acres upon acres of property. Usually inherited from his father. There are other terms associated with Mr. R, such as: scoundrel, rogue, libertine, and cad. Oh, and licentious which means he lacks moral restraints, usually sexual ones. You’ll want to slap him. Then kiss him. Slap him a second time, even harder than the first time. Then sleep with him. Well, you get the idea.

But since he’s met the heroine, the bad boy persona seems to be disappearing. His conduct is much improved. He’s now becoming, dare I say it? Honorable. The heroine has made his heart grow two sizes since they met. She’s now done the Impossible! Won, where hordes of ladies and lightskirts have failed. She has snared the ultimate bachelor. Along with his heart, money, and lands.

I LOVE reformed rakes! The trope transforms the “baddest” of the bad boys into a respectable good guy. I’ve read gazillions of these novels. And never tire of them. Ever! Want to read about rakes and the lucky ladies who made them heel? I thought you would. Light chuckle.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite reformed rake novels. Some of which I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing. I’m also including some on my to-be-read can’t freakin’ wait to read list. Enjoy your journey, but take care- these rakehells are extremely hard, if not impossible to resist. Had I lived in England during the Regency era, I know I would’ve fallen prey to his wiles. But would have enjoyed every second of his overtures.

  2. Dashiel Thorpe, Earl of Brimsworth, in The Taming of the Wolf by Lydia Dare. He’s got a black book and gets busted for it! Tsk, tsk!
  3. Simon Westfield, the Duke of Blackmoor, from A Certain Wolfish Charm also by Lydia Dare.
  4. The Earl of Dunraven from A Dash of Scandal by Amelia Grey.
  5. Lord Morgandale in An Earl to Enchant by Amelia Grey.
  6. Lord Phillip in The Rogue and the Rival by Maya Rodale.
  7. Sebastian Grey from Ten Things I Love About You by author Julia Quinn.
  8. Julian Bellamy in Three Nights with a Scoundrel by Tessa Dare.
  9. Captain Jackson Logan if I recall is in a different setting than the typical historical, but is the ultimate baddy. He really is bad-to-the-bone. I’ve re-read it so many times, I’ve lost count. You can find him inside the pages of An Honorable Man by Rosemary Rogers.
  10. Garrick Le Clere, Marquess of Beauworth, from Wicked Rake, Defiant Mistress by Ann Lethbridge. It’s on my Kindle!

Review: Amelia Grey’s novels are what romance dreams are made of. Simply charming! I’m thrilled this novel was reissued; allowing me the chance to discover its beauty. I’ll admit I’m partial to novels featuring reformed rakes. Knowing the heroine succeeded where hordes of women failed. Yet regardless of your favorite tropes, I believe all romance readers will enjoy A Dash of Scandal.

I’d also like to mention that some authors reveal clues pointing to the mysterious antagonist. Not so with Grey. I never realized who the Mad Ton Thief was until it was revealed at novel’s end. I believed it to be someone else entirely. Apparently, I’m not the sleuth I once was. Romance, mystery, and scandal, intermingle in what’s sure to be…your newest favorite read.

Favorite scenes:

Number 1: Millicent is writing gossip notes on her dance card when a shadow falls over her card. Guess what the shadow is? Not a what. A who! Lord Dunraven. Ha-ha.

Number 2: Every…time, he blows her a kiss. Yowzah! I know you can’t hear me because I’m wearing my gloves, but I’m clapping wildly.

Heroine: Kidnapped, Celia Seaton is no passive miss. At the first opportunity she gets out of the attic of a two story cottage wearing only her under clothes. Stumbling upon her worst enemy (who doesn’t even know he’s her enemy because she doesn’t register on his radar) conked out across the threshold of the house, Celia hesitates on what to do. When he wakes and doesn’t know who he is a brilliant idea takes shape.

Hero: Tarquin Compton is a rich fashionable dandy (but not gentry) who collects erotic books and books on poetry. When he gets lost in the moors he stops at a cottage for directions and gets knocked out by Celia’s kidnapper. When he wakes he suffers from amnesia and buys Celia’s story that he’s her fiance. Well he buys some of it anyway, there’s no way his name is Terence Fish, which makes him wonder if he tricked Celia about who he was in order to seduce her.

Favorite Moments: When she gives him her web of lies about who he is and what he means to her, the cauliflower incident, and when she gives herself to him.

Missed Opportunity: Tarquin immediately confronts Celia about her ill use of him after the return of his memories, instead of actively trying to be the man she created for him. I thought he was really falling for her at the time and would rather go undercover to discover if she really loved him or was just using him before his confrontation. But apparently he needed to get his head on straight before he could regret his harsh actions/words.

And heroine should have said once when he was still suffering from amnesia that she loved him... all of him even the parts he couldn't remember, because she was darn near thinking it and that would have been sweet. It would also force Tarquin to come to terms with his idiocy sooner. Luckily she rejects his reluctant and insulting proposal to patch up her now ruined reputation.

Mystery: Why is an ex-fiance/governess who has been tossed aside/dismissed for moral turpitude kidnapped? Terence Fish wants to know and so should you!

Review: A fun romp with witty banter, a plucky heroine, an amnesiac hero, and cauliflower! You won’t regret running out to get this book for your collection.

In the third installment of the Casa Dracula series, Milagro finds out that marrying into a vampire family isn’t nearly as glamorous or easy as one might think. The Council has a bunch of hoops she has to jump through and the more she learns about them the less appealing it becomes and the more estranged she and Oswald are.

It should have been as easy as signing some papers and all the extra security Oswald wanted her to have would have been bestowed. Instead they want her to renounce her American citizenship for Vampiric citizenship and abstain from sex with her fiancé until after the wedding. What business is it of theirs anyhow? If that wasn’t enough they stick her with a vampire wedding coordinator for the family side of the ceremonies! Can you guess who they got? Cornelia, Corny, Ducharme.

Corny claims to be on Milagro’s side but she’s sticking Millie with all sorts of unpleasant tasks – creating a vampire fruitcake and sewing wedding clothes for herself and Oswald. Then while borrowing Cornelia’s car to run wedding errands the car quits and Millie nearly dies. Police get involved and Oswald doesn’t believe her when she says she’s not acting paranoid… but it’s not paranoia if everyone seems to be out to get you.

One of the things Millie is most concerned about is the bloodletting that Oswald seems to expect once they get married. She hasn’t been able to stand getting cut up and licked since Ian saved her with is blood. She’s also not interested in cutting Oswald and half the time she doesn’t realize her own strength and hurts him. When she runs into Ian she tries to deal with her issues and get him out of her system at the same time – it leads to an unexpected revelation – that Ian has a heart and Milagro can indeed break it.

Outside of wedding plans, Millie is ghostwriting for Don Pedro. While the job is about her writing his memoir, she’s fabricating everything. Joseph Alfred Joseph, someone she met while setting up the deal with Pedro, comes to visit and gets involved with Corny. Oswald wants to hire a new partner and expand his business, something that really bothers Milagro and the two fight over it among other things.

At every turn, instead of bringing them together, the wedding seems to be breaking them up and worse Millie’s confused about her feelings for Ian and Oswald’s parents dislike her with a burning passion. What’s a girl to do?

Head's up there are some spoilers in this review. Ye be warned.

In the final installment of the Casa Dracula series, Milagro must make the toughest choice of all and that’s following her heart. She’s with Ian currently, but every time she thinks of Oswald, her heart aches. The idea of leaving Ian though causing just as much heartache which confuses her because she swears her hormones hijack her brain whenever he’s around.

When Ian hires thralls, Milagro is severely tested, but Ian confronts her about the issue. Then she sees him snacking on their next door neighbor, Christine (Cricket) Poindexter, and while the woman seems to be enjoying it a little too much, it’s the last straw for Millie. Of course with Ian, Milagro is always looking to find fault so she can run from him. He poses too much of a threat to her heart compared to the safe and fascinating Oswald.

A torrid fling in England and finalizing a second contract with Don Pedro is just the thing she needs to distance herself from all she’s feeling. Ian is none too pleased and they have another confrontation. When Wilcox Spiggot comes to America to continue the affair, he’s killed and left to decompose on Milagro’s bed in her loft.

She assumes it was Ian but his thralls say he wasn’t in the country. Leaving, she stumbles across a scene at the neighbors. Cricket in an attempt to win Ian has been draining her blood in doses and saving it for him, this time she accidentally cut an artery and bled to death. Her husband freaks out, slips on the blood and goes down hard on the floor cracking his head.

Cue a super secret special force team that hauls Milagro away. This is where the opening prologue and the story realign. Book four of Casa Dracula is noticeably darker in theme than the previous while still keeping the ongoing humor element. The one thing I will tell you about the dark portion is that it’s not very long and there’s no rape. Milagro uses her wits and escapes going to Mercedes and then onto the ranch looking for help.

Oswald is not happy and a series of events occurs that results in Milagro having amnesia. At first nobody believes her but it soon becomes apparent Millie is indeed suffering some trauma. The Grant family calls in a shrink who comes to the ranch to help her out while they petition for recovery time from the Council who wants to investigate and interrogate Milagro.

Is this the second chance Milagro needs to turn things around with Oswald or will she realize her heart belongs to Lord Ian?

When she asks for the reasons both men claim to love her is very eye opening set of moments for her and some of my favorite moments in the series.

If you haven’t yet tried the Casa Dracula series, and you love vampires or comedy romances, you need to snatch up these novels immediately!

A Hellion in Her Bed is book two of the Hellions of Halstead Hall series by Sabrina Jeffries. The Sharpe family consists of five children raised by their grandmother. Their parents died under mysterious circumstances which set tongues wagging throughout the ton and shadowed their lives growing up. When all the children were grown but exhibited no signs of finding partners and settling into married life and babies, their grandmother decided to do something about it. Her ultimatum dictated that they all had to wed by the end of the year or be disinherited.

Lord Jarret couldn’t be more disgusted that his older brother, Lord Stoneville capitulated so easily to their grandmother and was now honeymooning with his new bride. Determined not to yield to the old broad, Jarret strikes a new bargain with his grandmother. He will manage the Plumtree brewery for a year, without her interference, in exchange for his inheritance which he plans to use to save his other siblings from the unhappy task of following their grandmother’s dictates.

When he meets Annabel Lake, of Lake Ale, a young single woman, he’s immediately suspicious of his grandmother’s involvement. Her proposition of combining forces to brew an October ale to take to the Dutch East India Company was equally ludicrous and foolhardy. If all went well all the brewery’s troubles (and his own) would be taken care of permanently. If not, he would lose everything. Against his gambling nature, he turns her down, but her second proposition based on a wager was too tempting to turn down.

Both are determined, competent, family oriented characters with a passion for brewing. Both have secrets and hidden depths. The true question is, are both willing to gamble for love?

As a complete side note: Some of the cutest paraphernalia came with this book when I got it in the mail. There were interviews in the Parasol Papers for both the hero and heroine, a letter to the editor of the papers from the hero and heroine, a little how-to on beating a gambling rogue at cards, and a deck of playing cards with the book’s cover on them. There were more cute things describing book one of series too. I thought it was excellent marketing and lots of fun to read too.

This is a fantastic spinster story set in 1836 England. Our heroine, Amanda, is a 30-yr old spinster supporting herself as a novelist who has decided to do something for herself, for once in her life. As we well know a never-married 30 yr old woman is quite on the shelf, but this does not prevent her from having the same sexual needs as any other woman. So our heroine, and my heroine for this, hires a male prostitute for her 30th birthday completely disregarding social conventions of virginity and premarital sex.

On her birthday a suitable man with an association to the escort service does appear on her doorstep and we assume that this is her prostitute. As the reader we are mortified to learn that this man is not a prostitute despite his sexual actions with our heroine. Later in the book Amanda and the not-prostitute Jack meet at a social/publishing event.

The story as a whole involves Jack doing everything he can to get Amanda back in bed and eventually convinces her to have an affair with him. I very much enjoyed the affair and the experiences of our main characters in public and in private (rating: 5). Once Amanda decides that the affair must end, things get pretty complicated and despair ensues. Months into this unfortunate depression we discover that Amanda is pregnant. Again, our never-married 30 yr old woman has just discovered that she is pregnant- this is a problem. I call this a solid 4.5. There are 2 reasons that this review is not a full 5: there is some rear-entry stuff (gags and feels uncomfortable) and there is a bit too much time spent on inner-turmoil instead acts based on inner turmoil.
