This is the second book in Wisdom’s Demon series and the first of hers I have read. The author has set up an open world for her story. The magical community isn’t hidden from the “mundanes” but they don’t really mix. There is an alternate dimension called Inlander’s Magical Plane where magical folk can live and shop.

Lili is a healing witch (doctor) that is searching for her best friend who has mysteriously disappeared while working at Crying Souls, a hospital for magical folk in San Francisco. She gets herself a job there to secretly investigate Sera’s and many others disappearance. What she finds is the disturbing treatment secretly taking place in the basement on the insane. One such patient is Jared, a smoke demon who is thought to be beyond help. Lili and Jared team up to uncover what is really going on down there.

I had a hard time finishing this book. It just didn’t hold my attention. The main and secondary characters didn’t have a lot of depth so I never felt invested in them. The author also wasn’t able to make me believe in the world she created. I didn’t feel the chemistry between the Lili and Jared. The deep connection between them seemed to come out of nowhere.

Lili has a talking cat, the reincarnation of Cleopatra who is supposed to be a source of humor, but the snarky cat’s comments seemed forced. The plot was straight forward and predictable. No surprises or twists. There were some secondary characters whose appearances didn’t do anything to move the story forward, just show what a nice people Lili and Jared are. They felt like story filler to me.

Based on other reviews of this book, I am pretty much alone in my opinion about this story <G>. Sometimes an author’s voice just calls to you and sometimes they don’t. This seems to be the case with me. I won’t stay away from this author’s other series, just this one.

This story is written in the first person.

We see that Faith Bettincourt and her friends are not exactly human. But she has a human job working in a hospital. She’s a charge nurse in the Children’s ICU unit. Her friend Lisa is a succubus who’s also a nurse. Faith is also the youngest daughter of the devil.

As you read, you’ll notice that as a succubus Lisa isn’t very good at it. If you’re a fan of the series Drop Dead Diva, you can almost picture April Browlby (character: Stacy Barrett) as Lisa – it seems to be a perfect fit. Lisa is just as “dippy” as Stacy is.

Faith isn’t your typical looking girl either – she’s a demon off the old block. She can also do some things that we can’t do like teleport from one place to another. She also has a crush on her next door neighbor, Matt. As you read, you will see that they start a relationship. But even Matt is not all that he seems.

Faith’s brother Tolliver is a major pain. He’s also the one that made Lisa into a succubus. But Faith is different from most demons – she has a conscience. Not your typical demon. Although Patricia has made all her characters different from what I thought they would be – in a good way.

Faith is coming out of a coffee shop and who should she bump into but none other than her sister, Hope. Hope isn’t any better than the brother. As I continue reading, I can definitely see the actors from “Drop Dead Diva” playing the characters in Patricia’s book. It would make a great Lifetime movie or series. I would definitely watch.

If I could cast the part of the devil, I would love to see Steve Martin in the part. For the mother, I could see Diane Keaton. And of course Faith would have to be Brooke Elliot (character: Jane Bingum). Jane’s demeanor would fit Faith’s perfectly.

Patricia also gives us some mystery and suspense. This is all a great mix. It’s what keeps us reading from the beginning of the story all the way to the end. You have no choice but to read the whole story – it’s that good. As I was reading, there were parts that I just had to laugh.

Don’t let the title of this story fool you. It’s definitely not a dark story with some sex thrown in. It’s a very funny tale with romance thrown into the mix. This is definitely a story that you may want to read more than once. I went into reading this thinking this would be a book to read around Halloween – boy was I wrong!

Was it a voodoo queen’s black magick which lured me into the story, or a white witch dabbling with a 24 hr. spell? Who knows?! But what I do know is that Ms. Redford’s novel is not to be missed. It was spectacular! I read it in “one” day, and am now jonesing for more. Got a have…more!

What’s Inside? There’s a very B-A-D wolf who’s uber-hot and knows it, a sexy tiger who growls while engaging in steamy sex, and a witch who won’t let anything/anyone stand between her and her man!

Summary: Book One in That Old Black Magic Series

Jemma Finnegan has kept her feelings for Griffin Trudeau under lock and key for ten very long years. As for Trudeau, keeping his feelings in check has been his own personal hell. Involving himself with his best friend is against the rules. Not because they’re friends, but because he’s her familiar. He knows what the rules are. Review: With new-to-me authors I never know what to expect. But after reading That Voodoo You Do, I’m an instant Jodi Redford fan. I’m inclined to believe she owns a magickal scale to place over her manuscripts because her literary elements are perfectly balanced. I loved her characters, hated her antagonist, cranked the A/C through the sex scenes, and the happily-ever-after just warmed my heart. Book two, here I come!

My Favorite Scenes:

Scene #1: When Griffin “has” to ask Logan to help him seduce Jemma. (Smile).

Scene #2: Every scene where Griffin uses the endearment baby.

Scene #3: Every time Logan says sugar.

Scene #4: When Griffin and Logan make her fantasy come true. What starts in the kitchen with some novel uses of sauce, will end on the counter of a hardware store. Trés hot!!!

Recommendations: Mega Mass-Appeal for everyone 18 and older.

If you’re drawn to paranormal romance, this novel has all the paranormal characters you’d want and expect. Erotic romance lovers: the intimate scenes are cranked to extra double-boil. Erotica readers, we have some M/F/M encounters. Oh, you want romance do you? Check. And the HEA will keep you smiling for days. If you enjoy the friends-to-lovers tropes, this book has it. Into zombie reads? (Hello, sister dear!) There’s plenty of the undead to make you scream!

Emily Stone is a book conservator who is sent to Westbury Manor to clean and conserve the book in the library. George is the hunky night guard who watches over the manor at night.

I love how Lucy describes Emily’s first glimpse of the library. You can almost picture the look of awe on her face when she sees all those books for the first time. You can just about see Emily drooling over what she’s seeing and then lovingly touching all the books she can.

As a romance reader, I would be in heaven if I went into that type of library and it was filled with all types of romance novels. You’d never get me out of there. All I would need is a nice fireplace and my imagination.

You have to love how Emily meets George for the first time – he’s not exactly what she was expecting. You have to envy Emily as she gets an eyeful of George. Oh, to be in her shoes. In using your imagination, who would George look like (if he could look like anyone)?

As Emily is going through her books, she comes across a photograph. It’s a photograph of the resident ghost, William Elliot. George and Emily decide to work together to help William move on. But we also get a story of who William is. It’s just enough to get us interested but it doesn’t overtake George and Emily’s story.

You can tell that George and Emily are very comfortable with each other right from the start. When they end up going back to his place, you can picture how impatient they become. I think Lucy planned it perfectly by having the sex come toward the end of the story. It helps to build our anticipation.

Lucy keeps right to the couple’s story without getting into a lot of their backstory. If you put in too much of a backstory, you lose your readers. She gives us a couple that do something more than just get between the sheets. You want to see the couple interact with one another – get to know one another. And she leaves us begging for more.

I was disappointed to see their story come to such an abrupt end. Did they stay together after Emily finishes her job at the manor? Do they go on to have other adventures or do they go their own separate ways? Does this mean this is part of a series? This definitely a short story you will want to read.

Summary: Jason Bowen was murdered over a hundred years ago by his wife and her lover. Ever since then he has haunted the house he lived and died in. Lanie O’Keefe buys the deserted house and moves in with plans to renovate it to its former Victorian beauty.

Jason is drawn immediately to Lanie’s looks and her mind. Unknown to her, he follows her through the day and lays with her in the bed at night. He starts having feelings and physical sensations that he hasn’t experienced since he died. Then he realizes that he can travel through Lanie’s dreams and surprisingly those dreams are about the day’s prior to his own murder.

Review: The whole book is like a dream itself. The reader flows almost seamlessly from dreams to happenings in the present day. You become part of the dream. Only occasionally did the shifting from the present to dream/past become confusing.

Jason is the kind of ghost that you would want to be haunting your bed. He is handsome, kind, considerate and focused on Lanie. She is beautiful, smart, and totally unfazed by the realization that her house is haunted. In one scene Jason decides to test Lanie’s reaction to a possible ghost by slowly opening a squeaky kitchen cabinet. She watches without a sound or any hint of fear. Then she calmly makes her tea, sits down to make her to-do list for the house renovation, and only occasionally look up to see if the cabinet moves again.

The main mystery of the book for me was not how Jason died, but how Lanie and he are going to get their HEA. The ending was a pleasant surprise for me.

Overall: This is a very clever story with a dream hero who will make you believe in ghosts and in the power of the mind.

Strange Neighbors Trilogy: Book Three

Summary: Sylvestro (Sly) Flores (hero) and Morgaine Marlowe (heroine) have been friends for almost a decade. They’ve had their reasons for not pursuing a relationship. He’s a vampire. She’s a witch. Sly’s also a widower who loved his late wife dearly; while Morgaine was a victim of date rape.

Now that the ugly past is behind them, they’re ready to let their feelings be known, but someone’s about to plunge a stake through their plans. Sly’s demented maker’s on the loose. Will Vorigan succeed in ending a love that’s been brewing for years? Or can Morgaine recruit her paranormal neighbors to put a stop to this threat?

Review: Chase’s latest novel is outlandish and fun. Instead of the usual stereotypical paranormal characters, she gives us: a penniless yet humble vampire, a witch with very real human phobias, and a simple-minded witch with an odd kick in the gallop, just to name a few.

Most scenes were so over-the-top, I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. I felt it was an entertaining story. Yet, if I was to alter anything, I’d`ve delayed the resolution of the characters’ problems. The antagonist, e.g., was taken care of so quickly and without resistance, I was left thinking, “That’s it?!” Sly’s chipped fang was another example. I expected his dental issue would be more prolonged.

Overall I’d say, it’s a light paranormal read which doesn’t take itself too seriously. And sets out to accomplish its goal: to make readers laugh.

Recommendations: Recommended for readers who enjoy the friends-to-lovers trope, light paranormal romances, funny quirky stories, and “lots” of secondary characters. If you’re searching for a romance which spotlights only the hero and the heroine, this isn’t it.

Favorite character: Gwyneth A witch with a vocabulary that’s singularly hers. Well the good news is that she understands herself. The bad news? That she’s the only one who does! Lots of miscommunications lead to some sticky situations.

Favorite scenes:

Number 1: Every time Sly passes out stone cold dead at sunrise. No matter where he’s at, Morgaine’s in charge of covering up his condition.

Number 2: Spells-gone-wrong. When Morgaine and her cousin (Gwyneth) are drinking moonshine and turn Sylvestro’s skin the color red.

This post is in response to a little nugget that I read in Heather’s article at the Galaxy Express entitled Does Science Fiction Romance Need More Alpha Heroes? The specific section that caught my eye was this:

In response to the My Paranormal Malaise post at Dear Author, Lisa Paitz Spindler asked:

"Why is it the paranormal character is so often the hero and not the heroine?"

Yeah, what's up with that?

I can tell you exactly what is up with that as I am a fan of paranormal romance and fiction. So here it goes… six reasons why the paranormal character is always the hero!

  1. We like our heroes mysterious. What is more mysterious than a mythological creature, be he vampire or lycanthrope or other?
  2. Strong powerful hero + average heroine = swoon. When an extraordinary specimen of the male gender sits up and takes notice of a rather ordinary female it is easier to place ourselves in the heroine’s shoes. That’s not because we think of ourselves as unworthy, this formula just makes it more accessible for readers. This scenario also tends to fill the tenderness and protectiveness side of the fantasy.
  3. Strong powerful hero + kickass heroine = hell yeah. When number two’s formula just doesn’t cut it there are the novels about strong heroes and stronger heroines. In this scenario the reader and heroine tend to dominate over the situation. The hero must work around the heroine to get in her good graces and who hasn’t imagine upon at least one occasion a strong sexy male groveling at your feet?
  4. Angel, Spike, Jean-Claude, Asher, Edward Cullen, Jasper Cullen, Eric Northman, and Bill Compton. Do I really need to go on with this point? I think this pretty much brings it home. Otherworldly men are downright sexy! Especially vampires!
  5. The desires of the paranormal fit better on a hero. The act of drinking blood is considered highly sexual in vampire romances. It’s become part of the erotic fantasy. Sometimes the heroine likes to pretend to be helpless and the hero’s act of feeding gives her a thrilling rush. Besides, I think I pretty much covered how icky it can be to read a heroine drinking blood.
  6. Redemption always looks better on a man. Many paranormal stories involve the preternatural lead repenting his past acts dictated by his nature, circumstances, and misinformed beliefs due to change. This makes him now a brooding hero and occasionally puts the heroine in the middle of the path toward his salvation or as his savior.

So there you go—six reasons paranormal stories always feature preternatural heroes.

Summary: Ian MacNeill, hero, is an earl-slash, alpha pack leader-slash, laird; who will lose Argent Castle because of financial reasons if he doesn’t do something quick. The solution? Agree to let Sunset Productions film a Highland movie on his property (in the Highlands of Scotland).

The production crew has agreed to all of Ian’s countless stipulations; so why then, is the assistant to the assistant director trespassing and breaking and entering?

MacNeill isn’t obtuse; he’s cognizant of Julia’s lies. He knows she’s being untruthful about many things: her surname, her occupation, and her motives for creeping around his castle. Another laird would be furious with the lass. Punishing her even. But Ian has his own wolfish ideas to get the lass to behave.

Review: This novel has it all; the suspense, the romance, a malicious antagonist, and a castle with secret tunnels, trap doors and its very own…ghost. I can’t decide which appealed more, the suspense or the mystery. “Give me a minute to think about it.” Let’s go with…suspense. I remember gasping out loud on page 6 and that was just the beginning.

Favorite Character: Flynn, Argent Castle’s very own ghost. He always helps a lady in need! I’m not kidding, I wanted more Flynn! (I’m pouting like Tinker Bell and stomping my little foot.)

Favorite Scene(s): I loved the way Ian welcomes Julia to Scotland. (Welcome me, welcome me!)

Then there’s the hike, which ends at the falls, where Ian pleasures Julia with and without her clothes. Hot doesn’t even begin to describe it. The man has talent! He also whispers sweet nothings in Gaelic.

Cameos: I spied with my little eye a wolf biologist named Cassie, and my favorite pack leader, Leidolf. For new readers, or those reading the series out of order, you can read all about Cassie and Leidolf in Seduced by the Wolf (book 5).

Special Surprises Which Tickled Me Pink: I found two references (pages 165 and 345) regarding LRP’s Get into Bed interviews. (Cute.) (Funny.) Again…tickled pink. :D

Recommendations: Recommended first and foremost to mystery lovers, then to readers who love romantic suspense, and finally to paranormal romance readers.

I love Linda Welch’s voice. I enjoy seeing through Tiff Banks eyes (especially when she is looking at Royal <G>). Yeah, I have a thing for this demon (he is actually Gelpha) Tiff and Royal start their own detective agency and their relationship is moving along nicely in spite of Tiff’s trust issues. We meet a new race of beings called “Dark Cousins”. They have a lot in common with Royal’s people, but the Gelpha are terrified of them. We learn a little about them in this book, but I think we will be seeing them again in future books.

Royal and Tiff have to help them find who is killing Gelpha and Dark Cousins. The investigation takes many dark turns Tiff begins to wonder if she can trust Royal.

There was a secondary story going on that I found just as interesting as the murder mystery. Someone secretly sent Tiff the diary of Elizabeth Hulme. A 15 year old on an expedition of Burma in 1887. I was just as riveted by the diary as Tiff was. Tiff has to figure out how the diary relates to their current investigation and the origins of the Dark Cousins.

Great writing, interesting mystery, romance and quirky ghosts. Can’t wait to read the third book in the series Dead Demon Walking.

Why I love Tiff so much:

I felt like making a childish face, along with childish remarks about snooty stuck-up bitches, but I didn’t. I’m all grown up and I don’t do things like that anymore. Wished I could, though.

This is a fabulous contemporary update of the Christmas Carol. Matthew McConaughey is Connor Mead. Connor is the new Mr. Scrooge, except he’s gorgeous, charming, and wealthy. So what’s wrong with the guy? Connor is a miser, just like Scrooge. How? Unlike Scrooge, Connor withholds love/feelings instead of money/possessions. Just like Scrooge, Connor gets visited by 3 ghosts and is forced to learn just what kind of man he really is.

The first ghost is the Ghost of Girlfriend Past. She is a 16 year old girl to whom Connor lost his virginity. Played by Emma Stone, she’s hardly recognizable in braces, frizzy red hair in pigtails and a crazy outfit. If it wasn’t for Stone’s distinctive voice I wouldn’t have been able to place her at all from her role in House Bunny.

Noureen DeWulf plays Melanie, the Ghost of Girlfriend Present. As Connor Mead’s overworked secretary she is the most consistent woman in his life. Melanie’s job includes scheduling everything from photo shoots to play dates. She draws the line at breaking up with his women (a firm believer in karma). DeWulf is fantastic and a sheer joy to watch on screen.

Nadja, Ghost of Girlfriend Future, is played by Emily Foxler. Beautiful and ethereal she leads Connor through the life he can expect if he doesn’t change his ways. Silent like the angel of death from Christmas Carol, she is nevertheless affective in communicating to the audience.

Daniel Sunjata is the wedding beefcake brought in to sex up Jenny Perotti’s love life. It bugged me the whole movie how gorgeous he was and how familiar his face and unable to place him. Ladies before you go to IMDB.com he’s James Holt from the Devil Wears Prada. He plays a sincere, sweet, and intelligent man, luckily for him when Jenny and Connor reunite he is not left out in the cold.

Jenny Perotti, played by Jennifer Garner, is the love of Connor Mead’s life. We watch them as youngsters, as teenagers, as just starting out in life adults and as established adults. Jenny is the girl next door, the one right under your nose. She’s been hurt by Connor in the past. If only being around him didn’t make her feel for him all over again she could move on with her life… will Connor learn his mistakes and if he does can he get her to believe in him again?

I predict Ghosts of Girlfriends past becoming a favorite among many. It certainly is one of mine!
