Summary: Book Two in That Old Black Magic Series

Clarissa Miles (head mistress of the Beaumont Coven house) is a little stressy lately. Seven years ago she sold her soul and now it’s collection time! Keeping up the everything’s-fine pretenses is starting to take its toll. And whoever said that every cloud has a silver lining wasn’t headed to Demonsville. Yes, time really does fly when you have only one week left to live.

So, what to do with seven days? Well, earth-shattering sex with her wolf familiar for one. But who is she kidding? It’s not meaningless sex if strong emotions are in play. The closer Logan Scott gets to her heart, the farther she’ll retreat. With no future to offer Scott, Clarissa will lie/deceive/pretend that his love is unrequited. Logan though, is about to teach his sexy witch a lesson. That even in the direst of circumstances, hope can still be found!

Review: The second book in That Old Black Magic series had more emotionally gripping conflict than the first novel, the freakiest antagonist I’ve encountered in like…ever, lots of scorchingly delicious sexual encounters, and a love that really does conquer all.

After reading The Seven Year Witch I felt as if I’d just returned from one hell of a trip. Talk about true escapism. An author that causes me to lose myself in a story-is my kind of author. I’m off! Book three’s calling. I hear it includes a sheriff (love those) and well, there’s more to him than meets the fin. Was that too corny? Lol. Let’s just say, book three has a real shark of a man. Reviewer laughs at her own joke.

Recommendations: Do you like bad boys? How about a werewolf who thinks he’s the be-all, end-all in bed because let’s face it…he really is! This novel is for readers who enjoy good vs. evil plots. Paranormal romance readers will be happy to hear there’s: several witches, a hot-as-sin werewolf, and an antagonist who’s really sinful. No. Really! We’re talking seven deadly sins here. The sexual intimacies are biting your bottom lip good! And if you enjoy love conquers all HEA romances, then this novel over qualifies.

Favorite Scenes:

Scene # 1: Three words: edible massage oil.

Scene # 2: When Logan is getting in touch with his, um, can’t say manhood. How `bout werehood!

Scene # 3: There’s a scene where Clarissa is at the top of a stairwell and Logan looks up at her. Time just stands still as their eyes meet. Loved that!

Scene # 4: When the author has all seven sins together in the same room.

Comedic Touch: Scott’s friends tease him because of his permanent erection state as of late.

Review: Dreaming of the Wolf by Terry Spear

This is the 8^th book in the Dreaming of the Wolf series, and the first one I have read. Each book can act as a stand alone and the author does a good job of explaining the rules of the Lupus Garou pack life, but I didn’t feel as invested in it as I probably would have if I had started with the first book.

When I first started this book I really didn’t want to finish it. Our smexy alpha hero Jake and the heroine, Alicia have an instant connection and are having hot outdoor sex by chapter 4. I have no problem with that, but it seem on every page one of them was thinking how much they liked the other, but nothing could come from it because:

A.) She isn’t one of us, we don’t date humans we only have one night stands with them, or

B.) I don’t have time for love I have to avenge my mother’s death.

I wanted to smack them both. The whole story is cliché and there really wasn’t much depth to it. The plot the romance was built around was weak, and I know what you are thinking…this is a PNR, the plot isn’t important. I know this, and there is an audience for this type of PNR, but it just isn’t me.

That being said…I found myself starting to get interested in a secondary character, Tom. He is the brother of Jake and Darien and by the end of the book the only one that hasn’t found his mate. I was able to connect with him unlike the other characters. Maybe because he wasn’t pining and whining over a woman . Matter of fact, I liked him enough to hope the next book in this series is about him. I want to see him get his HEA.

So, I am giving this 3 stars because Tom found his way into my heart and made me want to read his book. Like I said earlier, this just isn’t my type of PNR, but I’ve read some other reviews and lots of people love it, which means it’s me, not you Dreaming of the Wolf .

Was it a voodoo queen’s black magick which lured me into the story, or a white witch dabbling with a 24 hr. spell? Who knows?! But what I do know is that Ms. Redford’s novel is not to be missed. It was spectacular! I read it in “one” day, and am now jonesing for more. Got a have…more!

What’s Inside? There’s a very B-A-D wolf who’s uber-hot and knows it, a sexy tiger who growls while engaging in steamy sex, and a witch who won’t let anything/anyone stand between her and her man!

Summary: Book One in That Old Black Magic Series

Jemma Finnegan has kept her feelings for Griffin Trudeau under lock and key for ten very long years. As for Trudeau, keeping his feelings in check has been his own personal hell. Involving himself with his best friend is against the rules. Not because they’re friends, but because he’s her familiar. He knows what the rules are. What he doesn’t know, is what will happen if the rules are broken. Well, he’s about to find out!

Breaking the rules has never felt so right, or so…wrong. How could one beautiful night of lovemaking turn into such an unimaginable hell? A dead voodoo queen has just unleashed a legion of zombies, and they’re after one thing: Jemma’s blood. Does Finnegan know how to stop a zombie apocalypse, use her magick, keep her man, and stop the National Alliance of Witches from banishing the man she loves? Hell, no! But her coven mistress, Clarissa, has some ideas. Perhaps a sexy werewolf named Logan may be of help.

Review: With new-to-me authors I never know what to expect. But after reading That Voodoo You Do, I’m an instant Jodi Redford fan. I’m inclined to believe she owns a magickal scale to place over her manuscripts because her literary elements are perfectly balanced. I loved her characters, hated her antagonist, cranked the A/C through the sex scenes, and the happily-ever-after just warmed my heart. Book two, here I come!

My Favorite Scenes:

Scene #1: When Griffin “has” to ask Logan to help him seduce Jemma. (Smile).

Scene #2: Every scene where Griffin uses the endearment baby.

Scene #3: Every time Logan says sugar.

Scene #4: When Griffin and Logan make her fantasy come true. What starts in the kitchen with some novel uses of sauce, will end on the counter of a hardware store. Trés hot!!!

Recommendations: Mega Mass-Appeal for everyone 18 and older.

If you’re drawn to paranormal romance, this novel has all the paranormal characters you’d want and expect. Erotic romance lovers: the intimate scenes are cranked to extra double-boil. Erotica readers, we have some M/F/M encounters. Oh, you want romance do you? Check. And the HEA will keep you smiling for days. If you enjoy the friends-to-lovers tropes, this book has it. Into zombie reads? (Hello, sister dear!) There’s plenty of the undead to make you scream!

A matter of wolf seduction, an excerpt from Dreaming of the Wolf:

“Admit it. Mario and the other man you mentioned, Danny Massaro, murdered your mother. It’s a vendetta,” he said quietly, but the undercurrent of warning was there. What she was doing was wrong, and it could get her killed.

“Not a vendetta,” she said icily. “I don’t plan to gun them down like they did my mother. Just return them to jail where they belong. Permanently.”

She tried to pull her hand free from his, but he wouldn’t let go. With his free hand, he swept the back of his hand down her cheek with a tender caress. “All right, not a vendetta then.” But he still couldn’t see how she planned to safely take these men into custody.

He wasn’t sure just what about her made his pulse race to such an extent, the way the heat of her hand penetrated his, the way he couldn’t put her out of his mind, stirring a need to be with her and to protect her that he was having a hard time quelling. The expression on her face, though rebellious, appealed to him. Hell, everything about her did.

Her short-waisted suit jacket hung open as if she’d been ready to remove it to dress in a more casual manner. But he knew that had all to do with her having easy access to her gun, although the holstered weapon was still hidden. His gaze drifted down to where the ice-white silken blouse revealed the faint outline of her bra and a hint of lace, baring the sexier side of her outfit. Round pearl-button fasteners on her blouse captured his attention, and briefly, he wanted to touch them, to poke one after another through the slivers of their buttonholes, to see the rest of her as nature had intended.

She cleared her throat, and he returned his gaze to her face. A small smile tugged at her lips, and her brows lifted in a way that said she knew exactly where his thoughts had roamed.

Although he wanted this issue between them resolved—wanted her to promise him she wasn’t going any further with this futile effort to take down these men, when her hand rested on his shirt-covered chest, the vest now open and most of his shirt still unbuttoned because of hastily dressing, he thought she was going to push him away. Or at least try.

But her hand swept up his chest as if tentatively feeling the muscles beneath the shirt, memorizing the sen-sation of him, and judging his reaction, while her eyes focused on his chest as she continued to explore. Her touch left a trail of sizzling heat through the cotton shirt and a craving to touch her in the same way, except that he wanted to touch her skin to skin.

He lifted her chin and leaned down and kissed her. Potent need filled him as his mouth conquered hers, possessing and wanting, the worry that she could have come to harm still making his blood pulse hot and hard. His hands slid underneath the back of her jacket, gliding over the silky blouse while her head still tilted up to encourage his onslaught. Instantly responsive, she reacted as though she needed his comfort, his possessiveness, him, as she molded to his body, pressing harder against him, her hands exploring his back through the dress shirt with eagerness.

If they’d been back home in his own woods, away from civilization, free to do what they pleased, he would have liked to take her, conquer her, make love to her. It wasn’t just sex that he was interested in having with

Alicia either, but something deeper. Although he knew he couldn’t go there with her, not when she was human, and he had no intention of turning her.

With his thoughts shifting to his more primal needs, he barely registered that they were still standing on the path where hikers could come upon them at any moment. He wasn’t familiar with these woods or how frequently visitors to the area might slip off the path and do some exploring on their own. Still, he wanted more, wanted her. And his baser, more primitive instinct told him she was just as willing as he was. To go with the moment, to find pleasure where they could.

But was Alicia truly as willing?

Review: Lord of the Wolfyn (Royal House of Shadows, Book 3) by Jessica Andersen

Jessica Andersen's Lord of the Wolfyn is book 3 of the "Royal House of Shadows Series".

Our main characters are Prince Dayn who is the second son of the king of Elden. Alfreda Weston is a police officer who lives in Salem.

Right at the beginning, Jessica introduces the reader to the Wolfyn. They are ravenous shape shifters who are deadly beasts. Because of their habits, they need to be killed.

In this book, Dayn's father can mind speak to him and tells him what must happen to the Blood Sorcerer (the evil element from books 1 & 2). We also see that Dayn is considered a hunter.

Reda lives in a town that is known as a magical town. But Jessica makes Reda a non-believer. We first see Reda reading a book and for some reason she feels a connection to a guy who has green eyes. While reading, Reda says a "spell" that she learned as a child. After saying this "spell", Reda meets Dayn.

Jessica has Reda seeing things that no human should be able to see. It's made so realistic that you feel it's something that could possible happen to anyone. Then the action starts to happen.

You can almost hear Dayn's snide attitude after his first confrontation with Reda. Reda doesn't believe what's going on - she hasn't hear a word that Dayn said. Even with all that, she still agrees to help Dayn. Would we behave the same way?

Jessica then gives us their first kiss. But just as it starts getting good, Jessica gives Dayn a conscience. But she also has a way of having her main characters compliment each other. She gives them a past full of hurt. But there is also something else there that seems to draw them together.

There is a part in the story that Jessica has put an obstacle in their way. When Reda first views it, you can just about hear her comment. Dayn, being an alpha male, has an interesting way of getting her to cross that obstacle.

None of the sex scenes were forced. They just flow within the story. They are made to feel natural. Reda and Dayn loved with no expectations from the other. But the heat that is generated between the two continues throughout the story.

In Jessica's book, she adds another evil element and her name is Moragh. Moragh is there to stop Dayn from fulfilling his objective. This prepares us for the fourth book - "Lord of the Abyss".

You will definitely want to finish out the series.

Adding Supernatural Elements to Pride and Prejudice

Hi Keira. It’s good to be back at Love Romance Passion. In setting up this guest post, you mentioned that I love writing about history and that I’m pretty finicky about getting my historical facts right. Correct on both points.

Your question: How did you feel about adding elements of pure supernatural fantasy to Pride and Prejudice? What was easy/hard about it?

First, let me tell you how it was that I came to write a werewolf story. For two years, I was a contributor and reader of stories on A Happy Assembly, a Jane Austen fan fiction site. A contributor posted a werewolf story that was getting hundreds of hits and dozens of comments every time a chapter went up. Although I had never read a paranormal story, I was drawn in by the sinister atmosphere the author had created. Because Halloween was just around the corner, as a goof, I decided to write a short story called “Mr. Darcy on the Eve of All Saints’ Day” about a werewolf. The reception was so great that I expanded it to a full-length novel.

As mentioned, I love reading history and writing historical fiction, so, naturally, I had to research werewolves. But when I learned that these creatures of the night dined on exhumed corpses, I decided that, in this case, I was going to write my own history. I just could not imagine Jane Austen’s Mr. Darcy visiting local cemeteries for reasons other than paying his respects.

Completely liberated from the shackles of being historically accurate, I went down my own path—werewolf wise. My intent was to write a love story about Darcy and Elizabeth, one in which Mr. Darcy just happens to be a werewolf. Of course, there were difficulties because what is more complicated than Elizabeth finding out that the man she loves grows fur, fangs, and a bushy tail and roams the woods of Pemberley’s for two days in every moon cycle?

It was easier to write the story than I thought it would be, and that is because I love wolves. I once spent a half hour watching a wolf in Yellowstone National Park trying to catch field mice. He was a determined critter, but on this day, the mice won. Here in Arizona, we successfully reintroduced Mexican wolves into the White Mountains. But people of the Middle Ages did not share my admiration for lupines. By the time of Alfred the Great (circa 900), wolves had been completely eradicated from England, and possibly, the whole of the British Isles. Considering my love of wolves, it seemed appropriate for me to reintroduce, not only wolves to England, but werewolves as well.

Here is the set-up for the story: Mr. Darcy had been calling on Elizabeth Bennet for six months. Although a proposal was expected, Darcy did not make an offer because he was unsure if Elizabeth could accept his dual nature. When he invites her to Pemberley, she must decide if she can love a man who is part beast, and if she does, she must understand that she will always be looking over her shoulder in order to protect the man she loves from those who would harm him. To thicken the plot, there is danger of exposure as well as another woman vying for his affections. Doesn’t that sound interesting? I hope you will want to find out and read Mr. Darcy's Bite.

So what would you say if Mr. Darcy made you an offer of marriage and then revealed that he was a werewolf? I know what I’d say.

Breaking Dawn Party Ideas

I have racked my brain for some really great and super fun ideas for a Breaking Dawn party and I believe I have created the ultimate list!

Best/Worst Bride's Maid Dress Contest:

Breaking Dawn is centered around Bella and Edward marrying, so why not have a Breaking Dawn party reflect their happy union? We should all be taking part and with that I present to you the Best/Worst Bride's Maid Dress Contest. You can do one or the other or both and hand out an assortment of prizes (more on that later) to the person with the ugliest and/or prettiest outfit. Take pictures and make an album (real or Facebook) out of it to share with everyone later.

Wedding Cake Design Contest:

Another great idea for a Breaking Dawn party is to have your very own Designer Wedding Cake Cook-Off. Or perhaps Cake Wrecks Off - Twilight Style. Everybody could either bring their cake or prepare their Twilight Wedding Cake on site for more fun filled hilarity. If the idea of eating that much cake is off-putting go smaller scale and make Breaking Dawn Wedding Cupcakes.

Toast Off:

Another thing people do at weddings and you should do at your Breaking Dawn Party is toast! Grab some champagne or sparkling grape juice (depending on your age/preference) and kick off your evening by saying what Twilight or Edward Cullen has meant to you. Share how you first came into contact with Twilight and what you've been doing since the books ended to curb your craving. Might be a great way to introduce new, not to miss books to read after Twilight!!! What will you say to toast the happy couple?

You can't have a Breaking Dawn Wedding Party without dancing! That's the best part! So kick off your heels, throw on the tunes and get ready to dance some of the most fun Wedding Line Dances around! How to Play: Everyone in the party challenges the strong guy (now named Emmett) to a wrestling match. If anyone shows up Newborn strength and beats Emmett they win and get permanent bragging rights!

Note: You could set up the arm wrestling in a series of matches and hold a tournament. No strong guy needed unless wanted.

Random Imprint:

How to Play: This is basically charades, but each two person team is going to pull two papers with character names. They will now randomly act or improv a scene from the Twilight series involving those characters or pretend those characters are in love and try to get the rest to figure out who they are.

How to Play: It's a pillow fight to act out the infamous morning after feathers scene in Breaking Dawn. Game on! First to break the pillow and make it rain feathers wins. Review: Defining Twilight by Brian Leaf, M.A.

I’ve said before about how romance novels will improve your vocabulary and that they were responsible for my high SAT scores. Now it's time to show how that's possible...

Brian Leaf is brilliant. He takes Twilight and pulls from it the words most likely to be seen on a standardized test. The book is very simple to use and was so engaging some middle school girls that I know took turns quizzing each other from it for hours purely for fun. Think about that. If that isn't an endorsement right there I don't know what is.

There are 40 groups of vocab words – 8 words in each group. That’s 320 words (directly from Twilight) plus synonyms, antonyms, and word parts for a staggering 600 words. Each word is isolated in the text so students can look it up in context. A glossary is provided in the back of the book as well as after each page of words.

Brian Leaf has obviously read Twilight and writes engagingly in his explanations pulling from the novel to enlighten readers. The book teaches how to find synonyms, make analogies, fill in sentences, and figure out meaning from word parts. Each section and quiz builds on itself for repetition and memorization purposes. After every five groups there’s a quiz for practice.

I love the group titles: Tousled Hair, Enigmatic Answers, His Topaz Eyes, and Vampire Etiquette. You can picture where they come from in the novel.

If literacy parts of an exam scare you to pieces, nothing makes learning more fun and less scary than a sparkly vampire or two.

Review: The Bride of Casa Dracula (Casa Dracula Book 3) by Marta Acosta

In the third installment of the Casa Dracula series, Milagro finds out that marrying into a vampire family isn’t nearly as glamorous or easy as one might think. The Council has a bunch of hoops she has to jump through and the more she learns about them the less appealing it becomes and the more estranged she and Oswald are.

It should have been as easy as signing some papers and all the extra security Oswald wanted her to have would have been bestowed. Instead they want her to renounce her American citizenship for Vampiric citizenship and abstain from sex with her fiancé until after the wedding. What business is it of theirs anyhow? If that wasn’t enough they stick her with a vampire wedding coordinator for the family side of the ceremonies! Can you guess who they got? Cornelia, Corny, Ducharme.

Corny claims to be on Milagro’s side but she’s sticking Millie with all sorts of unpleasant tasks – creating a vampire fruitcake and sewing wedding clothes for herself and Oswald. Then while borrowing Cornelia’s car to run wedding errands the car quits and Millie nearly dies. Police get involved and Oswald doesn’t believe her when she says she’s not acting paranoid… but it’s not paranoia if everyone seems to be out to get you.

One of the things Millie is most concerned about is the bloodletting that Oswald seems to expect once they get married. She hasn’t been able to stand getting cut up and licked since Ian saved her with is blood. She’s also not interested in cutting Oswald and half the time she doesn’t realize her own strength and hurts him. When she runs into Ian she tries to deal with her issues and get him out of her system at the same time – it leads to an unexpected revelation – that Ian has a heart and Milagro can indeed break it.

Outside of wedding plans, Millie is ghostwriting for Don Pedro. While the job is about her writing his memoir, she’s fabricating everything. Joseph Alfred Joseph, someone she met while setting up the deal with Pedro, comes to visit and gets involved with Corny. Oswald wants to hire a new partner and expand his business, something that really bothers Milagro and the two fight over it among other things.

At every turn, instead of bringing them together, the wedding seems to be breaking them up and worse Millie’s confused about her feelings for Ian and Oswald’s parents dislike her with a burning passion. What’s a girl to do?

Review: Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Their love was hopeless and yet they couldn’t help but hope no matter how bleak and forbidden it was.

Grace has been searching for love for six years since her attack by wolves. Her heart leaps every time she sees the gray wolf with yellow eyes that saved her from the vicious pack. He only comes in winter and that is why she loves the austere season so much, because she can watch him. She tries to lure him closer with food and quiet patience until one day he does cross the line of the woods and let’s her run her hands through his ruff.

Sam has a secret. He’s been in love with Grace for six years and he’s the wolf outside her home in the winter clinging to the memory of her scent. He’s a werewolf and his time is running out. The cold makes them change, shed their human skin, until one day the heat of the sun can no longer turn them back. When he’s shot in the woods by hunters and reverts to his human form, Sam struggles to keep it because he knows deep down inside that this is his last chance of being human. The wild is calling him and Grace is his last chance to escape the desolate future that awaits him. Grace is his sun.

The story had a surprising amount of parallels to Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, but I suppose to make a story like this work there must be some similarities. Here are the ones that I remember off the top of my head:

Ignorant parental units. Grace’s parents, like Bella Swan’s, are incapable of really being there for her which forces Grace to be extremely independent. She even cooks for them.
Self-inflicted isolated heroines. Grace chooses books over human contact like Bella does, but Grace has real friends even if they aren’t as close as they once were. I’m surprised they let her get away with dropping off the face of the planet once Sam shows up in her life. (Yes, I know they keep asking her where she’s been and to call but they never force the issue.)
Heroes raised in supernatural families. Sam was raised by a pack of wolves. He was home-schooled by them, taught to defend himself and survive by them, and loved them like a family. Edward can hardly remember his human life and lives with six other vampires and they are like his parents and siblings.
Eyes. Sam’s buttery yellow eyes and Edward Cullen’s topaz eyes, though Sam’s was born with his and gets to keep them in human and wolf form. Additionally, they never turn black with hunger.
Musically inclined heroes. Sam writes lyrics in his head all the time when he has words (wolves have images) and plays the guitar. He writes a love song for Grace.
Bedroom window stalking. Sam and Edward both watch their loves windows, though Sam never dares to enter until he’s invited.

I had a hard time with the poetry and lyrics throughout the story. They worked and they didn’t at the same time. Sometimes the narrative broke down into them as events took place. There were the occasional weird turns of phrases that made me pause and have to go back and reread to see if it was a grammatical error or done on purpose. Overall, it was a great book. I loved Sam. He was the perfect werewolf gentleman and has restored my faith in the supernatural species. If you’re more inclined to love vampires and need a great book to introduce you to werewolves this book is for you.
