Accused is a powerhouse of suspense!

Summary: Pacific Coast Justice Series-Book One As a law enforcement officer, C. Edwards, has always upheld the law and followed her agency’s protocols. And prior to becoming a divorcée, she was also the faithful wife. No one would categorize Carly’s life as perfect, but at least it has a semblance of stability. Now all that’s about to change!

As Carly searches for answers regarding who murdered Mayor Teresa Burke, she’ll uncover deeply protected secrets. Secrets those in power would kill to keep. With body counts rising, Carly will find herself in a race to stay alive! She never would’ve guessed it, but she’ll have to rely on the two people she’s been avoiding the most. Her ex-husband (Nick) and God.

Review: Janice Cantore is a new-to-me author. And the first thing that impressed me was the flow of the story. Everything flowed perfectly! There were no abrupt and jarring scene changes. It was one continuous smooth storytelling. Secondly, the suspense is top-notch. Furthermore, as a former police officer, Cantore’s uniform dispatch signals were accurate. As a civilian, I also found her descriptions of police procedures insightful.

Recommendations: Recommended for readers who enjoy police stories and inspirational tales of faith and hope.

What I Enjoyed:

Element: I liked the police officers’ sobriquets: Carly is Crash, Joe is Control, and Nick is Face.

Scene: There’s a scene where an officer risks his life for another. I wept copiously! I wouldn’t say I used an entire box of tissues, but it was close!

Extras: After the story there’s an author interview; that was a novel element.

Summary: Book Three in That Old Black Magic Series

Maxwell Truitt (hero) is a shark-shifting sheriff. And for reasons unbeknownst to me, I want to sing that to the tune of Bob Marley’s song, I Shot the Sheriff.

All right, let’s move on. Max is patrolling the Atlantic one night when he rescues a woman from the clutches of a leviathan. And now Sheriff Truitt wants answers! Why was the leviathan so far from its territory? Why was Willa Jameson (heroine) parked near the ocean…at night? Max may want answers, but he’s not going to get them. For starters, Willa’s unconscious. When she does come to-she doesn’t remember what happened. And when she does remember, her memories can’t be trusted. Someone’s tampered with them.

The sheriff and his seal-shifting friend (Boone) will give Jameson medical assistance and nurse her back to health. But their involvement with the witch is about to plunge them into a deep-dark oceanic secret. A secret that may herald a horrific Armageddon. It’s a race against time to find Poseidon’s trident! Can a shark-shifter, one seal, and a witch save mankind from annihilation? May…be. After all, Willa’s not exactly-human.

Review: Ms. Redford is exceptionally proficient in escapism. In this third novel in That Old Black Magic series she introduces us to a plethora of new characters (all shifters): sharks, seals, dolphins, eels, walruses, and soul collecting leviathans. Just to name a few. Those readers who enjoy fantastical worlds will enjoy the portal journey from a land based Georgia into a watery Atlantis.

I felt that Maximum Witch was funnier than the earlier installments, and thoroughly enjoyed Willa’s inner slut as well as her naked cowgirl. It was also nice reading the contrasts between what the characters’ were thinking vs. what they actually say. It’s those contrasts that shed light onto the characters themselves, and also make for some comedic moments for the reader.

Because books one and two explored the witch-familiar link, I kept expecting Maximum Witch to do the same. Which sadly, it didn’t. On the plus side, the author gives us an eerie insight into the leviathans’ powers. How the soul collecting ones track a soul and how they’re able to transform their physical appearance, etc. This is one of those I can’t-get-enough-of series! And I’m eagerly awaiting Getting Familiar with Your Demon. It’s about a virgin witch and a demon soul collector named Samael Gorasola.

Recommendations: Recommended for sea loving paranormal erotic romance readers, erotic readers, adults who enjoy the fantasy genre, and those who like stories about Atlantis. Note: This novel contains certain paraphilic scenes such as steamy voyeurism and exhibitionism. It also has M/F and M/F/M sexual encounters.

What I Enjoyed:

Favorite Character: I thought the antagonist rocked! Reva’s a homicidal siren. If her ear-splitting wail can crack a driveway, imagine what it could do to your eardrums. Reviewer shudders violently.

Scene: There’s a scene where Max and Willa are having sexual intercourse in a Jacuzzi and Boone’s watching them. `Course it isn’t long before he goes from watching to participating. Reviewer grins wickedly. Then rereads the scene for the umpteenth time.

This book is part of the “Seaswept Seduction” series.

Savannah Connor is seen leading a protest outside of a warehouse. Zachariah Garrett is a Constable sent to stop her protests. He also thinks she’s nothing but trouble. Savannah is fighting for women’s rights – equal rights. She’s been arrested before – same reason, different town. She is a suffragette.

Our minor characters are Zach’s brothers Caleb and Noah. There is also Ellie Beaumont and Miss Lydia. Ellie is married to Noah and Miss Lydia has a crush on Zach. Chapter one seems to set the groundwork for our characters.

I find that the quotes at the beginning of each chapter are both interesting to read and very apropos. It’s also a great way to start each chapter. The quotes also come from the past and not a current person which adds to the history of our story.

Both Savannah and Zach seem to have strong personalities. It will be interesting to see how their romance plays out. It’s interesting to see that Savannah likes her “wanton” novels. They give her some very interesting ideas. They add a sexiness to our couple’s love scenes. You have to wonder what she would think of today’s erotica novels.

Chapter three seemed to be a turnaround for the story. The story seems to flow a little better after this point. Zach and Savannah seem to connect better from here. We see the heat build between the couple. Will our couple take it to the next level? It’s also a plus that she likes Zach’s son, Rory.

One thing that disturbs me is that as our couple gets intimate; our author still has Savannah thinks of him by his full name or as “Constable”. Is this a sign of the times or is this what keeps them apart. If they had feelings for each other wouldn’t both of them have nicknames for the other? Isn’t that what someone does when they have a relationship?

It’s not until they have an altercation that we finally see Savannah use Zach’s first name. But then they have an intimate moment and she’s back to calling him Constable. At this point in your relationship, can you picture doing that to your significant other? How can these moments be personal when you’re calling the love of your life by his full name? Can you see “Constable” being a term of endearment? It doesn’t give us any sense of romance – it’s strictly about the sex.

Savannah makes the perfect suffragette. She stands by her convictions. She would also fit into contemporary society. She stands by her beliefs and she feels that other women need to also start standing up for themselves. She doesn’t need a man to define herself.

Three quarters of the way through the story, Savannah has an epiphany – I’m hoping that this is the point where the story picks up. It’s at this point that I feel that Savannah and Zach are starting to get to the romance in their relationship.

Another downside to the story was that for a man who has a son, we see very little of him. He’s mentioned a lot but we see little interaction of the three of them together. I would have loved to see more scenes where they act like a family. This would be a good lead-in for Rory having his own story.

The romance then continues right up until the end. We see Zach as a hero but he doesn’t think he’s worthy. Savannah is there to let him know he is worthy. Love conquers all! It’s definitely a historical romance. I would read it once and then read again once the series is out. I might get a different perspective once all the brother’s stories have been read.

Setting: Blue River Texas, December 1914.

Clay Mckettrick comes by train to be the marshal of a town called Blue River. We see that he’s in his late twenties. At the train station, he meets a young child named Edrina Nolan. She tells him, very matter-of-factly, that her father was the previous marshal. As you meet her, you will see that she is a very precocious child. Edrina has a sister named Harriet. Edrina will make you laugh and Harriet isn’t too far behind. They are both wise beyond their years.

On seeing Edrina home, Clay meets her mother Dara Rose. We see that Dara Rose is doing the best she can, under the circumstances, to take care of her family. Clay hopes to find himself a good woman and settle down. Maybe Dara Rose will be that woman.

At one point in the story, Clay stops by with two letters for Dara Rose. You get the indication that these two letters may change Dara Rose’s life – you will need to continue reading the story if you want to find out if this is true or not. Clay is definitely the hero of the story – he is a man that protects women, children, and animals (definitely my kind of hero).

During a snow storm, Clay comes into the jail to find his cousin Sawyer. But Clay is none too happy about the reunion. Will Sawyer get his own story?

Dara Rose also gets some bad news two weeks before Christmas. Our hero shows up to make things better for her. The reader will be able to tell that Clay is going to be great for the Nolan family – he’s just what they need.

This is a historical romance with more on the romance and less on the sex – the story doesn’t need it. The reader will want to turn the page just to watch the connection between Clay and Dara Rose blossom. You will also want to see what Edrina and Harriet get into.

Linda gives the reader a love story that builds over time. Any sex between the main characters comes toward the end – which is the perfect place for it to occur. She also adds a nice Christmas message into the storyline.

You will be very pleased to add this book to your collection. This book can be read on its own but if you enjoyed it, you may want to go back and read her other books in the McKettrick series. If you follow this link you can see a list of all Linda’s books by series.

Edilean Series: Book Six

Heartwishes combines a charming setting with an intriguing plot, and then sprinkles it with a magical feel; presenting you with a comfort read you just can’t put down.

Summary: Gemma Ranford, heroine, was hired to piece together the family history for one of Edilean’s founding families-The Fraziers. Gemma relishes reading documents dating back to sixteenth century England. Perhaps working for Mrs. Frazier will help her decide on a dissertation topic.

As Ranford’s research progresses, two things will occur. She’ll uncover documents relating to a magical stone, and acknowledge her growing desire for the Frazier’s eldest son and Edilean’s sheriff, Colin. A professional thief now means to acquire the Heartwishes Stone; placing Gemma in harm’s way. But what about the repercussions of her involvement with her employer’s son? There’s the wrath of Colin’s former-maybe-current girlfriend (Jean), the possibility of being unemployed, disappointing Mrs. Frazier, losing credence with her adviser, not to mention, giving the town gossipmongers a new topic of discussion. Gemma has only one question to answer. Is love worth everything she’s risking?

Review: Heartwishes is the first novel I’ve read from the Edilean Series. I enjoyed it so much- my next course of action is to read Scarlet Nights. Would it have anything to do with the hero being a detective, and my loving novels with law enforcement officers? Don’t look at me! I’m not telling.

Because Heartwishes causes flare-ups of can’t-stop-reading-itis, I’m recommending you drink at least one heavily caffeinated drink “before” reading this novel. The most common symptom of my can’t-stop-reading-itis is the what ifs curiosity. And boy, did I suffer into the wee hours of the night. What if the antagonist finds the Heartwishes Stone? What if it really does have magical properties? What if Jean hurts Gemma in a jealous rage? Then again, what if Colin hurts Dr. Aldredge because of his own blinding jealousy? After all, the good ol’ doctor isn’t old at all. He’s gorgeous, smart, has dark black hair, blue eyes, and likes Gemma very much. All right, I’m being too polite. He’s freakin’ hot!

My Favorite Characters: Dr. Tristan Aldredge and Shamus Frazier

Why? Because Tristan is freakin’ hot. Lol. Actually, he’s also very attentive to people’s needs, is a great listener, can help you when you’re sick, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyes.

Colin’s youngest brother, the artist, has real depth. He’s a young man with few words and a big compassionate heart. I fell in love with him. Instantly!

Favorite Scenes:

Number 1: Colin’s dad is at home in Virginia, while his mom is in California visiting her daughter, Ariel. They find out Shamus is missing and they call Colin at the same time. One’s on the cell, the other is on the home phone. Colin places both phones together so they can scream at each other (while they pass the blame).

Number 2: When Tristan kisses Gemma in front of Colin.

Number 3: (The kitchen scene). Gemma’s in the kitchen hiding. When one by one, the Frazier men make their way into the kitchen. She gives them mashed potato lollipops. (Think what happens when you swirl a spoon into mashed potatoes.) All’s well until Mrs. Frazier discovers them and proceeds to berate them.

Honeysuckle Summer is a Sweet Magnolia Novel.

I was given three ARCs in this series to review.  I thought I had them in order, but I believe I am reading them out of order, and it doesn’t matter to me.

I loved this book from the very beginning.

It has everything that I love:

  • Good friends
  • Realistic characters
  • Good story
  • And a love story

As I said to Keira, if I had known how good it was, I would not have put off reading it.  I’ve already started the second of the 3 books.  I want to know how the individual stories unfold and where they go.

And there are other books in the series besides the 3 I was asked to review.  So I will definitely read those and more by the same author in her other series.

The Sweet Magnolias are a group of tight friends that began with the mothers and now includes the grown daughters.  They live in Serenity, South Carolina.  Whenever they need to get together either to support each other or to celebrate, they bring the margaritas and the guacamole, strong friendships, shoulders to cry on, and good advice.

Separate from them are their husbands and significant others who support their women folk as strongly as they support each other.

The Story:

Raylene Hammond has come back home to Serenity after a disastrous marriage, filled with physical and verbal abuse that ended with her physician husband in jail for beating her, not for the first time.  As a result of this beating, she lost the baby she was carrying.

None of this happens on the page.

Her friends rally around her.  The only place she feels safe is in the home of her friend Sarah.  And ultimately she ends up not being able to leave the house without having panic attacks.

Carter Rollins in a sheriff’s deputy, new to Serenity.  He shows up on her doorstep, angry, because when she was left for just a few minutes with Sarah’s children, as the babysitter ran a quick errand, the little boy escapes from the yard.  Raylene is unable to look for him, but she has the presence of mind to call for help.  Carter just happens to be the one who finds the boy.  He misinterprets the situation, thinking that Raylene is the babysitter.

One thing about Serenity, they look after their own.  And this is a very good thing.

Additionally, Carter is the guardian of his two teenage sisters, since their parents died.  One sister is exhibiting signs of anorexia, which is something the Sweet Magnolias know something about first hand.  Both this girl and Raylene find help with a psychologist.

Of course, you can guess there is a confrontation with Raylene's ex-husband, in which she holds her own and takes control of her life, but not without a lot of help from Serenity.

My rating:

This book is 5 out of 5.  I loved the warmth of the relationships within the town, within the main characters, between Raylene and Carter.  I felt as if the characters were real, not figures on a page.  The story is believable, with lots of information, without being didactic.  I just loved it!  (And I’m loving the second book too.)

Summary: Heroine, Tess Kincaid, is a NY Times bestselling author; who’s inherited her late father’s New England estate. Tess is looking forward to leaving all her worries behind. Especially those involving a threatening letter. It was written by someone claiming to be “her biggest fan.” But enough of the past, on to the future. A New England future! One which seems a whole lot brighter with Sheriff Mike Andretti next door. Mike (hero) has country charm, a stallion tattoo (not saying where), and a great ass! Told you! Whole…lot…brighter!

That is, until everyone begins to question Kincaid’s sanity. She sees fires which don’t exist, claims the movie projector turns itself on, and that someone planted anti-psychotic pills in her purse. Could the death of her father have caused her to snap? Or is it the obsessed fan wanting her to lose her head? (Figuratively and literally)!

Review: If you’re not familiar with Donovan’s writing, let me say this, “They have a very Hitchcock-y feel to them.” For readers who enjoy suspense, thrillers, and romantic suspense, that’s a plus. Sharon also has impending doom down to an art form. In the scene where Tess is hospitalized for a mental evaluation, you can feel the heroine’s distress and desperation. Extremely well written.

Preferences: Mike uses the endearment darlin’ in his conversations with Tess. I’d`ve preferred the hero mix it up a bit; adding angel or sweetheart sporadically.

Favorite Scenes:

Number 1: I loved when Tess’s grieving dam breaks, and she’s screaming to her late father. All her pent-up anger, confusion, and utter pain just burst forth.

Number 2: When Tess and Mike make breakfast together. It shows how wonderfully they relate to one another.

Comedic Touch: Sir Galahad (Mike’s talking bird). Loved him!

Underlying Theme: Betrayal. This novel draws to mind a Latin phrase from a Shakespearean tragedy. When Julius Caesar utters, “Et tu, Brute?” A key player will commit…the ultimate betrayal.

Content warning: m/f and some m/m elements. Not for the faint-of-heart! Contains a ritualistic rape scene I found disturbing. Mind you, Novak only implies what happens. Had she actually detailed the occurrence, I’d feel even more perturbed.

Further commentary: I’d’ve used only one Charles Manson reference.

Well written: Has nail biting suspense! Bravo on the dialogue challenges between hero/heroine and Abby, a young deaf girl. Novak expertly conveys the desperation Nate and Rachel feel when trying to decipher Abby’s signing; which hold vital clues regarding the life within the commune. You’ll fear for Rachel’s safety, and feel how the suspense crescendoed- once Rachel is initiated as a Covenanter.

White Heat is the first installment from Brenda Novak’s Department 6 Trilogy.

Recommendations: Pick up a copy if you generally read romantic suspense, or suspense/thrillers. You won’t be disappointed, if you grab novels hoping to find one with a happily-ever-after. White Heat has one.

This contemporary erotica is a wonderful way to pass a few hours. It takes place in Texas and is about the coming together of a permanent threesome between two men and the woman they both love.

Braemel does an excellent job exploring the mind spaces of all three characters including their fears, motivations, and love.

Nikki Kimball’s life is a wreck all thanks to her good-for-nothing brother and her lousy ex-husband. Her childhood ill equipped her to understand the freedom and joy found in being responsible for personal happiness and because of that she’s had none until the two heroes come along.

Dillon Barnett and his foster-brother Brett Anderson have shared fists before over the luscious Nikki back in high school. It nearly destroyed them then and even now after all these years and her marriage to another man Brett’s just learning to trust the friendship between them again fully. One or the other will lose out because they’re forcing Nikki to choose. But what if they didn’t? Could they possibly both love the same woman and not rip each other to shreds? It doesn’t seem possible because jealousy is what ruined everything before.

I found it a little hard to believe Nikki would be so adventurous at first because of how lousy her marriage was. After the miscarriage things fell apart rapidly and she stayed out of cowardice. Her husband, Wade, cheated on her constantly. He was supposed to be her only lover before Dillon and Brett come along and he honestly didn’t come across as a considerate sounding bloke.

The love making other than that was steamy and sexy. There’s some alone time, voyeurism, three way action (one time double penetration – that was woo-dang smoking hot), and lots of cuddling. Go ahead and spice your bedroom up with this read. You’ll thank me later.

When Sienna Diaz’s beloved Beagle Zola is taken from her home, she turns to a detective agency for missing pets called Top Dawg.  The owner Cruz Santino is an ex-cop whose investigation reveals that Zola was grabbed to use in a dog-fighting ring. Even though Sienna is devastated by Zola’s abduction, she can’t help but be attracted to Top Dawg’s very hot owner. In turn, Cruz is instantly smitten with Sienna. He wants to get Zola back not only because it is his job, but he also wants to get to know Sienna a lot better.

Likes:

  1. Cruz. How can you not love a smexy guy who finds missing pets for a living?
  2. Sienna was an “older” woman with a daughter in college.
  3. How Cruz and his dog Roman work so well together.

Dislikes:

  1. As torn up as Sienna was about Zola, it was difficult to believe that she would be interested in sex at all let alone would just hop into bed with Cruz after knowing him for only a day or two.
  2. Sienna’s best friend Tori was just a little bit over the top for me.
  3. Even though I knew that the book was about a dog-fighting ring and that there would be an HEA, it was difficult to read the parts of the book describing the conditions of the dogs. Fortunately, Escalera never gets into too much detail.

Overall:

A different kind of damsel in distress story with a hot pet detective. If you really love animals, you might feel a little tension in the dog-fighting parts. Just remember that there is a HEA out there.
