Review: When the Rogue Returns (The Duke’s Men, Book 2) by Sabrina Jeffries

When the Rogue ReturnsHero: Victor Cale just recently learned of his wife’s whereabouts after she abandoned him and said their marriage was a mistake. She left him to face the consequences of the crime she and her family colluded to and executed so effortlessly under his nose. He plans to confront her and seek justice for all the injuries they and she inflicted on him through their perjury. His broken heart is at the top of that list.

Heroine: Isa Cale, hiding under an assumed name, Sofe Franke, is angry and frightened when her husband shows up in Edinburgh ten years after he deserted her. Why is he there? Why now? What does he want? Does he know of their child? Does he want to trick her or force her into illegal activities again? Well, he’s about to find out that Isa is not the timid little mouse he married. She’s got teeth and she’s willing to do what it takes to protect her daughter.

Review: It’s clear from the beginning that the hero and heroine are laboring under a big misunderstanding. A decade spent apart and a series of lies has torn their fledging marriage into two and two hearts are grieving for the loss of a love they both thought was true. Their double-speak when they first meet again is quite entertaining. Victor’s reaction to Isa’s feelings, about the pet name he gave her, is particularly heart-wrenching. He did not realize he’d been so misunderstood! He’s quick to come up with an alternative. Both are unique to the heroine and I love that. What great about this novel is that Sabrina Jeffries knits both hearts, both characters, slowly back together. Trust is a big issue for them both and it’s a delight to see them work through the fabrications and make amends for back judgments in the past. It’s also nice to know that even while they trust, they did both still have doubts and had to fight to overcome them time and again. It made for a realistic read. I also enjoyed that the story took place outside of the usual London setting. Not a book to be missed!

Excerpt: A SEAL’s Salvation by Tawny Weber

A SEAL's Salvation cover_1Subject: Navy SEAL Petty OfficerBrody Lane
Current Status: On leave

Obstacle: The one girl who was off-limits…

Where Navy SEAL “Bad Ass” Brody Lane goes, trouble follows. Being run out of his hometown years ago for misbehaving with Genna Reilly—the sheriff’s daughter—was one thing. Now Brody is about to step into real danger. Not the suggestive letters he’s been exchanging with Genna, but the kind of trouble that can send a soldier home injured and broken inside…

Genna’s entire life has been orchestrated by her family.
The right job. The right friends. Enough! Brody’s return offers the promise of lust-filled pleasures. Of flesh teased and tasted. She’s not expecting to find a soldier with distant eyes who has secluded himself from the world. But this good girl knows exactly how to bring a bad boy back to life….

Uniformly Hot! The Few. The Proud. The Sexy as Hell.

Excerpt:

She was so damned cute when she got feisty. Brody couldn’t help but smile a little. Actually, she was so damned cute all the time, feisty or not. And sexy. Fascinating, entertaining, fun.

His smile fell away.

Maybe that was part of the problem.

He’d thought they could be friends. He hadn’t been able to resist spending time with her, and had thought he could control the intense attraction he felt for her. That he could channel it into making up for some of the lousy deal she’d gotten after he’d left.

But he felt as if he’d signed up for a torture project. Days spent talking and joking. Watching her bake, listening to her dreams. Nights spent hard and horny, diving into dreams so hot he thought the bed was on fire. He was a man used to pushing through the pain, well trained to overcome his body’s weaknesses. Except, apparently, the ones Genna inspired.

“Look,” he said, taking a deep breath and hoping for some semblance of tact and diplomacy. “This friendship thing, it was a mistake.”

Her eyes widened, surprise and hurt flashing. Then, with a sweep of her lashes, her expression changed. Intensified. It sent an itch down Brody’s spine.

“We’re not going to be friends anymore?” she asked in a calm, friendly tone. If it wasn’t for the fact that she was saying the right words, he’d have figured she hadn’t understood him.

As soon as he nodded, she gave him a brilliant smile and tossed off her coat. It hit the floor with a swoosh just as she reached behind her back. The move was quickly accompanied by the sound of a zipper. And Brody’s hiss.

“What, exactly, do you think you’re doing?” he asked, hoping like hell it wasn’t what he thought she was doing.

“Seducing you.”

Damn.

That’s what he’d been afraid of.

Review: A SEAL Wolf Christmas (Heart of the Wolf, Book 12) by Terry Spear

seal wolf christmasReviewed by Lynn Reynolds

Bjornolf Jorgenson is in the Amazon jungle singing “Jingle Bells” – that makes for an interesting picture. He’s there — along with Anna Johnson — to help rescue a family. She’s a woman that knows how to take care of herself as well as help lead her group through the jungle. Bjornolf and Anna are a very interesting couple. Once the job in the Amazon is complete, they are given a very interesting job.

If you consider yourself a romantic, you’ll love the job they have been given. It comes at the perfect time since Christmas is almost upon them. One thing I love about Terry’s wolf series is the sense of community and family amongst the packs – and what better time than around this special holiday.

You will find that our author doesn’t shortchange her readers once the main characters start getting hot and heavy. You’ll need to open the window to let the cool air in or at the very least turn the air conditioning on – as my mother used to say “Hubba, Hubba, Hubba!” And it doesn’t take away from the main purpose of their job.

With all the paranormal/fantasy shows on TV this year, it would be really nice to see this as a television series. The only thing is, I would hope that they stay true to what was written in order to do the books justice. I would hope that they not put it on one of the movie channels just because not everyone subscribes to all of the paid channels.

Besides the music, you can tell that this is a Christmas story because of the snow, the Christmas tree, and all the trappings. What a great way to get you into the holiday mood and a hunky SEAL ain’t bad either – I wouldn’t mind if he was under my tree this year. If you decide to wait and read this around the holiday, why not put on some of your favorite holiday music – while you cuddle up by a fire (if you have a fireplace), with your favorite blanket, and your favorite hot drink.

But if you don’t want to wait, that’s ok because this is a book that I feel that can be read at any time of the year. Yes, it’s about the spirit of the holiday but I feel that it’s more about their shifter ability and the job they must complete. Terry leaves you wishing that you had some shifter ability. But would we use or abuse what most others would be jealous about? Since there’s no way that I will ever be able to switch from human to wolf, I’ll just have to keep reading The Heart of the Wolf series. Don’t worry if you haven’t read any of her other wolf books yet, this can be read as a stand-alone. But I would hope that it would also leave you wanting to read the other 11 books that have come before.

Review: Handcuffed By Her Hero (W.I.L.D., Book 2) by Angel Payne

handcuffed-by-her-heroReviewed by Lynn Reynolds

Please make sure that you read the Dedication – Angel mentions some worthy military causes. I have to say that if you love this series, what better way to honor the author than to make a small donation in her name to one of the causes she mentions.

Sergeant Zeke Hayes hears a scream. He thinks his friend Rayna Chestain is someone special. They met under some pretty rough conditions. To make this series flow, we continue to read about the sad story of human trafficking. The story also shows the effects of those kinds of conditions on the people that are freed. Angel also reminds her readers that PTSD is no longer associated with just the military. You can’t be afraid to ask for help.

Luna Lawrence is an interesting character – I’ll let you experience her for yourself. But Angel leaves me wondering if she will make an appearance in the next book. She is one of those characters that you want her to have things to make her life better. And then she does a one-eighty.

One thing Angel is good about is showing her readers exactly how much of a Dom Zeke actually is. BDSM is an experience and he knows how to do it very well. Are you Vanilla or are you willing to be a voyeur? Or maybe you like to participate? We get to see the “lifestyle” and the scenes can be very graphic – but then you can’t be totally Vanilla your whole life. Live a little and explore your wild side. And if you don’t want anyone else to know what you’re reading, just read in bed.

I found that this book had a serious amount of testosterone going on. It makes me wonder if our author has any plans for Rayna’s brothers. It will be interesting to follow her and see what else she comes out with – if they show up in this series or even one of their own.

She also knows how to build the tension because of the evil that exists but it doesn’t overtake the storyline. The same goes for Garrett and Sage. Their story continues from when we first met them in Saved by His Submissive. We see them just enough to know what happened after their story ended.

Garrett likes to read an author that seems to be a rival of Angel’s. If you want to know more about this author just follow this link http://lexiblake.net/index.html. And if you haven’t read his story yet, make sure to change that.

If you’ve loved reading this series, you’ll be happy to know that Angel’s next book Surrendering To Her Sergeant will be out this November. It will continue the story of Ethan and Ava whom you also meet in this book. Angel is very bad in that she gives the reader a very short teaser to get you ready for the Fall.

Review: The Officer and the Secret (Semper Fi, Book 3) by Jeanette Murray

the Officer and the SecretReviewed by Lynn Reynolds

This is the third book in Jeanette’s Semper Fi series. The books in this series are stand alones but if you love military romances I hope you will read all the books. I tried to find out if there will be a book four in this series but was unsuccessful.

Captain Dwayne Robertson is a Marine who’s coming home from his last deployment. When you read this you will think he is a solitary man. Isn’t that sad for a soldier to come home to be alone. During the Gulf War, I had a chance to welcome home our soldiers at our local base. It was an honor and privilege. I still have the undershirt that I had some of the returning soldiers sign for me. If you ever get the chance, take advantage and shake the person’s hand that helps to keep our country safe.

Veronica Gibson has been talking to Dwayne via Skype while he was away. They forged a friendship that seems a little awkward since his return. Jeanette has made these two characters polar opposites. Dwayne is all alpha male and Veronica is shy and introverted (even though she is fighting to change that). Makes you think of the saying about opposites attract.

It’s interesting to watch how Veronica experiences things. We get to see things from her perspective for what we take for granted. Jeanette also includes a very real problem for a lot of people in the military – PTSD. She doesn’t get preachy but she shows the reader that it is a serious problem and that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help – it is not a show of weakness.

Our author also shows her readers that you need to learn to take chances. You might miss out on finding the love of your life if you don’t take a chance. You need to learn to get out of your comfort zone. Otherwise, how can you experience some of the things going on around you?

If you like military men, you will love Dwayne and his crew. If you like quirky love interests, you will love Veronica. You will want to make sure to read this book if you like love stories where the characters have to work at their relationship. Jeanette kept me interested from the first sentence. You’ll also get your HEA ending.

Review: Saved by His Submissive (The W.I.L.D. Boys Of Special Forces, Book 1) by Angel Payne

Saved by His SubmissiveReviewed by Lynn Reynolds

Please make sure that you read the Dedication – Angel lets you know about what happens with the proceeds from the sale of this book.

Garrett Hawkins and Sage Weston seem to be a very sexual couple. But, then Angel gives the reader a surprise – it caught my attention. It showed me some men can show how much they hurt when their loved one is involved. We also see what some people will do in order to cope.

Garrett and his friend Zeke are on a mission. Angel gives the reader a real eye opening look into the nasty business of white slavery. Garrett and Zeke are men who work for Special Forces and are good dream material.

The words and scenes are very graphic but don’t let that stop you from reading this book. It’s also a book of faith and hope. There’s also a great storyline with some BDSM in it. If this is something that interests you, you will want to add this to your library.

I found that this was a book that I just couldn’t put down. I got hooked from the very beginning and then I just couldn’t stop reading. I also liked the fact that Angel included a secondary couple, Zeke and Rayna. The reader gets a small glimpse into their chemistry and their story will be coming this summer. The book is titled Handcuffed By Her Hero. If you go over to her web site, under books, http://angelpayne.com/books.html you can follow the link and she has added some main character profiles for her books – I loved this idea. I’m looking forward to reading more of this series.

Review: The Best Man (Blue Heron, Book 1) by Kristan Higgins

best manHeroine: Faith Holland was jilted when her fiance’s best friend outs him as gay at the wedding. Ever since, Faith keeps stumbling upon all the wrong men in her quest for love and marriage. The book opens when Faith is on date three with a guy that turns sour fast when his wife shows up and shouts obscenities at her. She has no intentions of returning to her Blue Heron, her hometown, to face her ex, but then her sister calls and tells her about a gold digger who is making plays at their father so she rushes home… only to get pulled over –

Hero: Police Chief Levi Cooper broke up the wedding because he knew it would make Jeremy miserable in the long run and he wanted the best for his friend. He’s never been a fan of Princess Super-Cute (hated this nickname, and Levi never gives her another one) so it wasn’t for her benefit and he couldn’t care less if she forgave him for it. After a disastrous month-long marriage to a woman in the forces, Levi is determined to only date women who will stay and Faith is certainly not that woman.

Review: I liked the friendship between Levi and Jeremy, and I also liked how Faith and Jeremy were able to shift gears into being friends. It seemed important if the three of them were going to live in the same small town. The best scene was Faith stuck in the bathroom window –

“Is there a problem here ma’am?”

“Nope, just taking in the view.”

“Me too. Nice night isn’t it?”

“It is. It’s beautiful.”

“What happened to your shirt?”

“I, um…I had a wardrobe malfunction.”

“I see. […] So, what happened?”

“I flushed my sweater down the toilet.”

“That happens to me all the time.”

Audio Review: The Lady Most Likely (Lady Most, Book 1) by Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, and Connie Brockway

ladymostlikelyQuick Synopsis: Horse fanatic, Hugh Dunne, the Earl of Briarly, had a recent scare with a horse and decided he needs a wife and heir. To get both, he drafts his sister, Caroline, into throwing a house party and lets her pick the guest list.

Choice 1: Gwendolyn Passmore is the top girl of the season, but she could care less that all the men and their mamas are trying to snag her. She just wants out of London and back to her quiet country life. She is uncomfortable around crowds and people she doesn’t know. Small talk is the worst!

Choice 2: Katherine Peyton has already given her heart to another, but the cad ran off and hasn’t been seen since. Perhaps this outspoken lady is just the ticket to get Hugh out of the stables…

Choice 3: Georgiana Sorrell is a widow. She loved her husband, but he had his flaws. She is not looking to get married again. Georgie is friends with Hugh’s sister and is at the party for moral support… though Caroline might have a match in store for her yet.

Review: Three ladies, three gentlemen, three part story. It’s quick and easy, and different from most anthologies because the three stories are more intricately entwined. It’s important to read in order as events happen and are linked from story to story. My favorite pairing is Gwendolyn and her love match. I like shy heroines and it’s fun to see how that shyness coupled with her popularity in the ton has made one person think her a snob. I also enjoyed the party games, especially the “do you love your neighbor.”

Narrator: Rosalyn Landor is one of my favorite narrators. It’s pretty much a guarantee that if she’s read a romance novel, I’m picking it up.
