Her Plan

Veronica (Ronnie) DelVecchio is determined to thwart Dylan Garahan’s advances and avoid the family curse. The one about DelVecchio women falling for Irishmen only to end up carrying not one, but “two” buns in the oven. Nuh-uh! No way. She will remain strong! Even if he is the sexiest tall drink of water in all of Texas.

Is Not Working

What with Dylan repairing her shop and her cooking at his ranch, Ronnie’s resolve is fading faster than the paint on the cars at a junkyard. Who is she kidding, though? The man dances/strips at the Lucky Star. Hello! His body can’t be resisted. By anyone. Will Ronnie be quick enough to duck when he tries to lasso her heart, or will she realize that you can’t outrun a family curse?

Review: With Dylan I felt the characters’ emotional shifts happened too quickly and too often; throwing me out of the story. One second there’s pure rage, the next-there’s laughter. And I’ll admit, the humor was lost on me.

Too much testosterone is not necessarily a plus. The Garahan brothers (Tyler, Dylan and Jesse) have trouble verbalizing their feelings. That’s understandable. Some men aren’t very wordy or expressive. But the fact that they physically go to blows all the time? That was unappealing. To me.

The second half did seem more comfortable in its skin. And I did enjoy the idea of three brothers working hard to maintain the family ranch.

What I enjoyed: Dylan’s one-armed push-ups. Yum.

My Favorite Character: An elderly widow named Mavis. She’s a wonderful friend.

Spikes & Spurs Romance Series: Book Three

I’m as shocked as the next reader; I made it on Santa’s good list. Can you believe it? Oh. You can’t? Well…I did! And he fixed my busted review-o-meter. Whoo- Whee! I’ve really missed that ticking noise. Let’s have a look-see. Wow! It’s red, it’s steaming, and the pointer’s on the number five.

Summary: Liz Hanson, heroine, is a fortune teller who’s traveled all her life with her carnival family. She loves them very much and enjoys what she does, but has always felt an unrelenting desire to settle down. To own a house, and to just enjoy the stability that others seem to have. Which explains her speedy acceptance to Uncle Haskell’s offer. He’s giving her what she’s always wanted; her own home. Moving into Haskell’s place was an expected event, after all, she agreed to move in. What Hanson didn’t expect, was to run into her childhood crush, Raylen O’Donnell.

Raylen will awaken her womanly desires, and have her wanting to share her stability with him. Her carnival family on the other hand, insists her restless heart needs to travel. Liz is at a crossroads. Stay in Texas, or leave and travel.

Will Liz’s crystal ball foretell misery, or show her a happily-forever-after?

Review: If you’ve read a Carolyn Brown novel, then I’m just preaching to the choir, because you know how wonderful they are. But, if you haven’t, Darn Good Cowboy Christmas is the perfect place to start reading. Don’t fret new readers; Brown’s novels are stand-alones. She does a great job of cluing you in.

I really enjoyed all the heart-to-heart conversations between Liz and Blaze (who’s like a brother to her). During the dialogues I felt I was sitting next to the characters…listening. No, I wasn’t having auditory hallucinations (laughs). I simply meant the author writes them so expertly.

The story itself is touching and heartwarming. It’s about a woman finding the courage to follow her heart and realizing…that happiness means taking chances.

Recommendations: Recommended for all romance readers regardless of favorite subgenres. You’ll really enjoy it if you like the friends to lovers trope, happily-ever-afters, stories about meeting your soul-mate, and novels about rekindled love.

Cameos and Updates Galore: This Christmas is a cameo celebration. I spied with my little eye hunky Slade Luckadeau (hero from One Lucky Cowboy) with his granny Nellie and her sister Ellen. Jane (heroine also from One Lucky Cowboy) gets her fortune told. An update you won’t want to miss!

The author also updates us on Wil and Pearl, as well as Rye (Raylen’s brother). Because this is Raylen’s story his family plays front and center: sisters (Gemma and Colleen), brothers (Dewar and Rye), parents (Cash and Maddie), and his grandparents.

Lucy from Red's Hot Cowboy also pops into the Chicken Fried Café. She’s been one busy gal!

What’s Next? Book four, One Hot Cowboy Wedding, has a release date of April 2012; it’s the story of Jasmine and Ace. Someone’s going to Vegas, baby! And just you wait until you see the cover for this novel. Beautiful, I tell you. Absolutely. Beautiful!

Lucky in Love is a riot. Brown had fun putting phrases together that read like classic stereotypical western and modern feisty romance rolled into one. You’ll find expressions like: “my hide tacked to the smokehouse door,” “she belongs like a horse apple in a church social punch bowl,” and “heartache bigger than Dallas” to name a few. They were probably my favorite part of the book and never failed to make me smile or laugh out loud when they appeared.

Anthony “Beau” Luckadeau is lucky at everything but not lucky in love. He plans to prove them all wrong by proposing to Amanda, though his heart has long been lost to Amelia Jiminez, a one night stand at his cousin’s wedding. When he does propose everyone forces a smile and shakes his hand but nobody is congratulating him (not that he notices) because Amanda is the worst wife Beau could have picked. She hates ranching, barns, his friends, his workers, his home, and his nickname. It’s not classy enough for her.

Amelia Jiminez on the other hand is none other than sassy Camellia “Milli” Torres. She’s in Oklahoma to help her Granny and Poppy out on their ranch while Poppy is healing from surgery. She and her toddler Katy would never have stepped a foot out of Texas if she’d known Beau was Poppy’s neighbor. If making him dance in the dirt under fire of a .22 rifle doesn’t force him to keep his distance nothing will… and part of her doesn’t want him to stay away which makes him all the more dangerous.

Spikes & Spurs Romance Series: Book Two

Summary: Pearl Richland (heroine) has an unquenchable thirst for partying. She’s the girl friend who always lends an ear and never says no to a party. At least that was status quo ante. After her Great-Aunt Pearlita passed away, things just aren’t the same. She inherited Pearlita’s Bates motel. O.k., not really. It’s called the Longhorn Inn and she’s the new owner, but it does resemble that motel from the scary movie. Running the 25 unit 50 year old motel is putting a huge damper on her social life. As a matter of fact, it’s not just dampened it, it’s killed it.

And so it was, until a hot cowboy named Wil Marshall (hero) requests a room. Pearl doesn’t know it yet, but he’s about to turn her whole world upside down. Then again…she’s about to do the same to his!

Review: Red's Hot Cowboy brought along plenty of side-splitting similes, witty retorts and new characters to fall in love with. A fun, often touching story about how love sometimes finds us under the most unusual circumstances. There were also some references of domestic abuse relating to Pearl’s employee and friend (Lucy). And I should tell you, when Luke gives Lucy his testimonial, I cried.

Book two may differ in plot and setting from the first in the series, but still delivers sassy independent women and the strong men fearless enough to cross their paths.

By the way, did I mention Pearl hears voices? Actually, she sometimes imagines what her great-aunt would’ve thought about her choices. Go on now; you know you want to hear Chris Young’s song, “Voices.”

Cameos: Thought bubble: How curious! Pearl has a pendant similar to Austin’s (two crossed pistols over angel wings). And yes, I do notice those things, lol.

I spied with my little eye, lots of Love Drunk Cowboy characters. There was the O’Donnell brothers (Rye, Raylen and Dewar), their sisters (Gemma and Colleen), their mother (Maddie), and Ace Riley. Ms. Brown also included updates on previous heroes and heroines, e.g., Sharlene and Holt. As well as Austin and Rye post-marriage. She gives us a six-month update on Austin you won’t want to miss!

Obituary: Pearlita Richland passes away.

Favorite Scenes:

Number 1: Room# 10 on New Year’s Eve, of course! Things get fun after eight shots of whiskey.

Number 2: December 24th at the Longhorn Inn. No one sleeps that night! That was an entertaining scene to say the least.

Favorite Characters: Wil, who’s my kinda cowboy! Gotta love a sexy dark-haired man with a Blake Shelton CD in his truck!

I absolutely LOVED Wil’s disgusting nieces (Janey and Mesa). They have enough spunk for 30 gals. I really wanted to see them in more scenes.

What’s Next? Book three, Darn Good Cowboy Christmas, I believe will release in October of 2011. Followed by One Hot Cowboy Wedding, April of 2012. I wouldn’t miss reading them for the world!

Get ready to run with the red wolves in Spear’s latest action-filled novel! Your heart will batter against your chest as a new pack runs for its very survival.

Despite being the fifth novel in Terry Spear’s werewolf series, Seduced by the Wolf was written as a stand-alone. As a rule, I enjoy reading previous installments in a series. Simply because I like to spot cameo appearances. For example, Sarge from book four is now in Leidolf’s pack, and consequently part of book five. There are also references to book one characters: Alfred, Bella Wilder, Big Red, and Thompson. But again, reading the others isn’t a prerequisite to run with these reds.

Ms. Spear has an uncanny gift for accurately describing wolf behaviors. So much so, I’m beginning to speculate whether she herself is a lupus garou (werewolf), or if she just lives among a pack of real wolves. I guess we’ll never know!

Leidolf Wildhaven (hero) is a sexy rancher, and an “unmated” alpha doing his best to protect his pack. He’s the pack leader in Portland who takes in abused garous, providing them with a family and a chance at a better life. Used to being in charge, and never second guessed, he’s a wonderful superior. Until a Dr. Cassie Roux (heroine) arrives in Oregon. Cassie is a wolf biologist and advocate. On a deadline to write about wolf behaviors for a journal, her primary goal is to locate and document a red female lupus (wolf). When Cassie realizes the female and her pups need protection along with food to survive-Dr. Roux knows she’s the only one who can aid them. Their safety is now the only thing that matters!

Since Cassie’s arrival, Leidolf’s been asleep at the switch. She’s proving to be one hell of a distraction! Dr. Roux will risk it all, even her life to save the female and her pups. Leidolf's priority has always been the protection of his pack. Now hunters are on the loose. And with Cassie missing in Mount Hood National Forest everyone’s lives are in peril. Leidolf really can’t afford to keep getting distracted. Together Cassie and Leidolf will realize the greatest risk they face, may not be within the grounds of a national park. What they risk is losing their hearts!

Comedic Moments: How the Jag keeps getting stolen. That sports car can’t stay put!

What got me howling: When the male pack members fan out in search parties.

Recommendations: You’ll be seduced if you enjoy howling at the moon, stripping out of your clothes, reading paranormal romances with happily-ever-afters, if you like real wolves, werewolves, or just steamy sex in log cabins with a man that’s a real animal!

Want more sexy wolves? Book six is set for release in December 2010, titled Wolf Fever. Installments seven and eight are due out in 2011.

Story: Channing Kinkaid’s western adventure is turning out to be a big flop because the cowboy she hitched herself too is a real possessive jerk… and married?! Appalled she’s determined to get the hell out of Dodge until professional cowboy Colby McKay propositions her with a threesome/moresome sexual adventure a girl would be foolish to pass up. The rules are simple – she’s there for them whenever they want her and she can’t question them about the pleasures they plan to bring her.

Review (Spoilers): I can’t decide if I want to give props and hose the fact that Channing and Colby wind up together sans Colby’s partners. It’s certainly original for this erotica subgenre, but I felt Colby was acting ridiculous at times. He does threesomes all the time and then because Channing’s involved it’s not nearly so palpable for him? On one hand it’s realistic but on the other hand what makes Channing the one to inspire the green monster?

I also felt bad for the “third” rodeo partner who was gay and participated in getting a blowjob from Channing because Colby told him too instead of just coming out and saying he was gay and wasn’t interested in her. I thought that was degrading especially since it is clear later in the book that Colby knew the guy was gay. The second partner is bisexual and likes being with women and with the third partner adding extra drama.

Finally, the first half of the novel didn’t do much for me for two reasons. The first is that Channing is introduced feeling insecure about her rather large breast size (which never comes up again after she wins a random wet T-shirt contest) and kind of introverted because of her meek behavior with her parents and then she becomes an expert sexy woman with no qualms telling them what she wants and talking dirty which is so at odds to the mental image I had from the first little bit and secondly because I didn’t feel there was any emotion involved other than the need to do it. The second half did have the emotion as it became more traditional romance with spicy erotica elements due to Colby's jealousy and desire to make Channing "just his." I think perhaps that should have been the focus all along.

The sex was certainly steamy, hot!

I spent two days reading another bite your nails love triangle romance... I am such a glutton for punishment!

Of course, I cheated before starting. When it comes to Love Triangles, Jennifer Haymore changed my tune about spoilers. Now I am all for reading the last chapter to find out who gets with whom. Are you the same way or do you like to be spoiler free? Don’t worry I won’t share who wins the girl.

So once I knew who the ultimate hero was I started the book and immediately liked both heroes. Oh no! Like with the rejected man from A Hint of Wicked, I hope the rejected man from a Summer of Two Wishes gets his story too!

What’s fun about the Summer of Two Wishes, is that it’s a contemporary love triangle with a similar set up to A Hint of Wicked only this time the laws surrounding the situation are known. Even though they’re known, our heroine is still in for a hard decision!

Macy was desperately in love with her husband Finn Lockhart. She begged him not to join the army and go fight in Iraq but he was adamant that he would. Macy waited on tenterhooks for his safe return, but that was not to be the case. When officers came to her door with charred dog tags and their condolences, Macy’s world fell apart.

It takes a strong secure man to pull her out of her grief. His name is Wyatt Clark. They fall in love, get married and are celebrating their newlywed status (seven months) by trying to get pregnant and start their family. Life is good and Wyatt believes he’s the luckiest man alive until…

Finn Lockhart is recovered by Coalition forces and on his way home to reclaim his land and his wife. It’s a miracle, a dream come true and a nightmare all rolled in one.

Macy is now in what is called a putative marriage. She must dissolve one marriage by divorce (her’s and Finn’s) or by filing suit to declare one void (her’s and Wyatt’s). How is she ever going to pick between her past love and her new love?

Julia London does an absolutely incredible job putting together this contemporary love triangle. I love the settings, the heroes, the heroine, and the peripheral characters… yes even Finn’s mom!

Lessons in French is a feel-good story. It’s cute, lighthearted, and full of whimsy. It was the right novel at the right time. I needed cute, lighthearted, and whimsy. I smiled a lot when reading it and rooted for both of the main characters. They’re imperfect, but that just makes them extremely likeable.

The heroine is as Laura Kinsale describes--an anti-kickass heroine.  Callie Taillefaire is pretty shy. She prefers her animals to men and ballrooms. In ballrooms she’s an absolute wallflower without even trying. She was betrothed three times and all three men left her cold. The people of Shelford love her, but even they have to wonder what’s wrong with her when eighty thousand pounds won’t get a man to the altar. What’s great about Callie is that even though she’s not one of the kickass heroines running around in other romances, she can be fierce and courageous. She’ll even save the hero.

Trevelyn d’Augustin is a very interesting character. He is the son of aristocratic but impoverished French émigrés. Nine years approximately before the story starts, he was in love (or pretty darn close to admitting it anyway) with Callie. That her father did not approve of him is an understatement. One bad episode and Trev runs away to France where he does a lot of things from organizing fights, shooting at Englishmen, becoming a war prisoner, returning to England and organizing more fights, and getting in trouble with the law. He’s avoided Shelford for ages because he’s positive Callie is married with kids, but with his mother extremely ill he can no longer stay away.

They both get a second chance at first love. Trev pulls Callie out of her shell, one hilarious incident after another. Callie gives Trev comfort and quiet strength and a sense of purpose, but she can’t imagine that he feels anything beyond friendship and gratitude for her. So when her sister, Hermione gets engaged to Sir Thomas Vickery, Callie seriously entertains the attentions of an old fiancé. She won’t burden her sister and she won’t stick around with her cousin and his wife Dolly. Trev won’t pursue her romantically because of his legal troubles and because he feels she deserves more than he can offer… and certainly more than this idiot who’s back and sniffing after her eighty thousand pounds.

The title of this novel is what drew me to it in the first place but it was the book blurb that cinched it for me. I liked the idea of a one night stand that left a hero quaking in his cowboy boots over the heroine and a desperate urge to find her and when he does find that his playboy charm doesn’t wash and must resort to serious wooing to win her heart.

However, that’s not really how it plays out. The elements are there but the story weaved is a little different. Derringer Westmoreland, high on painkillers, ends up sleeping with a woman he should recognize but doesn’t. Both hero and heroine are at fault in the one night stand: the hero for taking too much medicine and for pursuing the heroine (who called herself Puddin’ Tame for goodness sakes) and it’s the heroine fault for taking advantage of the situation to lose her V-card… the whole matter bugged me. Out of your mind sex, shouldn’t actually be when you’re out of your mind.

When he wakes up, he’s only keen on finding the woman to get revenge, not to get into her panties, and to make sure she doesn’t slap a paternity suit on him… but then changes his game plan over the course of the first date.  Considering how angry he was over the paternity suit gambit, it should surprise you as it did me to learn that he was more than happy to have unprotected sex repeatedly. Idiot. The heroine’s not much better in that regard. Safe sex was not on the menu.

I did like that the pining away for years aspect on the heroine’s side wasn’t actually one sided. If it had been I’m not sure I could have bought the hero’s switch in his plans. As it was, Derringer had been warned away from Lucia on two separate occasions by her father. Derringer might be a ladies man, but he has a few morals and standards, and now that Lucia is old enough to make her own choices things are different.

I also didn’t mind that the heroine was 29 and still a virgin, though I know this will bug some contemporary readers who could buy it in a historical more easily. I think that’s a great life choice if that’s what a person wants, though the heroine was clearly saving her virginity for the hero and not marriage (which is not a bad thing either).

Lackaduck is very small town. Neighbors are few and far between as ranches sprawl in all directions. Luke Rawlins is Libby’s sexy new neighbor. He is so typical stereotype cowboy in his whitewashed jeans, chaps, and Stetson hat, Libby can hardly believe he’s real. Aren’t traditional cowboys a myth? Not in Lackaduck!

Hearing about an unsolved local mystery perks Libby’s interest. With her background in crime stories, Libby dives headfirst into solving the case of Della McCarthy. Is she merely a runaway and missing or was she murdered? As clues stack up it begins to look more like the latter and not the former. The top suspects? A taxidermist, a chef, and a veterinarian... the real killer is close and he has his eyes set on Libby.

It's a little predictable as far as the mystery goes as I solved it pretty quick, but I had a lot of fun reading it anyway because of the relationship between the hero and heroine. Luke is a wonderful hero who knows how to handle a nervous filly.
