Heroine: (Cordelia) Posey Osterhagen might be the plain adopted daughter, but she’s well-loved both at work, at home, and by her Little Sister (from the youth mentoring organization). If only that translated into her love life, but the boyfriend she’s got doesn’t want to go to the next level, preferring to have sex dates instead of real dates.

Hero: Widower Liam Murphy is back in town raising his teenage daughter so she can be close to her mother’s parents. The wealthy grandparents never liked him, seeing him a philanderer and leech. He can’t stand the women coming up to him looking to get reacquainted with the object in his pants... his safe haven is Posey... but there’s something about her that appeals to him despite her tomboyish figure.

High School Drama: Back in high school, Liam worked for Posey’s family’s restaurant. She had a huge crush on him, but he only saw the girl (Emma Tate) who ended up becoming his wife.  As high school drama goes, something was said, someone was dumped, a prom was ruined, and there were tears. (Prom always has somebody crying, doesn’t it? Sad.)

Review: I liked Posey’s background and self image and how that changed in the story. You could really empathize with her. Liam Murphy was suffering from OCD and I don’t think he ever got over it during the storyline (unlike most romances which show how flaws disappear under the influence of love) – which I kind of missed seeing. I would have like that or at least have him not fret so much about washing his hands. What I really liked was his portrayal as a father – responsible, loving, attentive, if a bit overly disciplinarian to begin with (Hey! He knows teenage boys and what’s on their minds!) concerning dating. I even liked Posey’s cousin Gretchen toward the end of the story (though she will tempt you to strangle her beforehand). Overall, charming, with a wonderful Disney-ish prom happily ever after.

Secrets rarely stay secret for long, and with Dr James Frain his secret is starting to take over his whole life and destroy his work relationship with his colleagues. There is only one person who can help him out, and that is Becky Arnfield who is the practise manager at the surgery he works at, and if she can't help him out, who can? She knows he has his, but she has troubles of her own to deal with - her fiancé Trent is not one to offer up a decent proposition to her, and she is tired of waiting for him to pop the question of marriage to her - if he does give her a date, she will be the happiest woman alive, but will he, or will she grow tired of him and the waiting?

She isn't the only one who is unhappy with her lot, Holly Parkes, a doctor at the same practise, and friend of Becky's has her own problems she can't seem to get her head around, and needs help with them, but these aren't her problems she needs to solve, they are her patients who need her help dearly.

Several people in this story are in need of a person to talk over their problems to, but will they take the time out to actually do that? The concept of Healing Love is about how these people deal with conflict in their lives even though they might want to sort it out themselves.

Readers will like the general feel of the novel, its tangled web of lives intermingling around two distinct characters, James and Becky. It is Becky who seems to have all the answers though, and she can be trusted to help out, but she can't help everyone at the same time, and in this story they all have to realize that eventually. Think about it, Becky would go mad if she had to consider everyone above herself, as most people would. The thing is, she will try to help out James as he sees him as a special case in her life.

At first though, this isn't the case; Becky knows what kind of man James is as he is new to their practise, and likes to have his wicked way with the nurses. He isn't much of a man she would be interested in, and he knows that, so he tends to keep his distance from her. He can't say that he hasn't tried to get her to be one of his conquests, though, and once she refused him point blank, he went onto someone else who might indulge his fantasies. Becky might seem like a busybody type who can't keep her nose out of other people's business, but she does have a genuine feeling for the staff in her care, even if it seems like she is the exact opposite. This is the usual damaged male helped by caring woman scenario that might appeal to some readers, but overall, the depth of the story and the fact the reader will get several titbits of other peoples problems and lives will serve to create more interest.

Sandra Brown has a prolific imagination, and the good thing is that every book seems fresh, no re-runs. How she does it is anyone's guess. Lethal is no exception.

I chose this book, given to me by LRP to review. I generally like Sandra Brown's books. I just don't want her romantic suspense to go too graphic in violence.

The story:

Lethal opens with action right in the thick of things. And the action is non-stop from there.

Honor Gillette is the widow of a police officer, and she is home alone with her precocious 4 year old daughter, Emily, planning a birthday party for Stan, her father-in-law, when Emily spots a man lying in their yard. When Honor goes to investigate, he turns out to be Lee Coburn, who is accused of a mass murder at a local trucking company. In a matter of seconds he has taken her hostage, using her young daughter as his way of keeping her in line. He is armed and dangerous, but he promises not to hurt her or her daughter if she does exactly as he asks.

And she does and doesn't.

But is he part of the problem or part of the solution? Did he murder the men or was he a witness? And who are all the corrupt officials and police officers, if they are? And are some of them supposed friends of Honors? And was her husband corrupt too? And was he murdered or was his death an accident? And how does Stan figure in?

Honor quickly realizes she must find the answers to these questions, because in the meantime, if Coburn is correct, someone -- or many someones -- are out to kill her and her daughter, to keep whatever her husband might have given her, if he did, a secret.

It is especially hard to find, because she has no idea that she has it or what it might be. And first she must convince Coburn of this -- and others would be less likely to take her word for it, but would try to torture her to get it.

Complicating matters is The Bookkeeper, merciless in all aspects, who is running the show, and The Bookkeeper does not leave witnesses. One of the enforcers is good (bad as the case may be) with a razor.

What's at stake:

The Bookkeeper is trafficking for prostitution using the Interstate and corrupt officials who look the other way when shipments of young men and women come through. Those who try to escape are taken out by the above enforcer or in other ways.

Violence:

The murders in the warehouse take place off page. Some of the razor action does not. Other violence occurs, shooting at close range; an explosion; etc.

Friendship and love:

Honor ultimately relies on her friend Tori, who is a good friend indeed. While she has had a colorful life, there's no question she will do what it takes to keep Honor safe. She contacts a new gentleman friend and asks him to lend her $1 million dollars for a ransom, if it is needed. (I would love to read a book about these two.) He proves himself to be a friend and lover to her, no questions asked and nothing brooked to the bad guys. And Tori is smart enough to realize she is being watched.

Even the man with the razor is not all bad. He has redeeming qualities.

Heads up:

There is a severely handicapped boy, the son of one of the officers, who is cared for at home. There is some discussion about how hard this is to do, as well as how it affects their marriage.

The ending:

I won't give it away. It's like an ending, then another ending, then an epilogue -- very clever indeed, and the actual ending is very satisfying, clever, and up for grabs, which makes it even more clever.

Does it get any better than this?

My take:

The plot is complicated, but woven together nicely. I guessed some of the plot, but it is spelled out clearly by about half way through the book. The question then becomes staying alive and taking down the operation and the bad guys. I did not guess the hiding place, but I thought I had.

I did my usual, reading the end, skipping back some, hesitant to read my way through, even knowing where it was going, taking it in bits and pieces, because it was scary, just the same.

Setting: Blue River Texas, December 1914.

Clay Mckettrick comes by train to be the marshal of a town called Blue River. We see that he’s in his late twenties. At the train station, he meets a young child named Edrina Nolan. She tells him, very matter-of-factly, that her father was the previous marshal. As you meet her, you will see that she is a very precocious child. Edrina has a sister named Harriet. Edrina will make you laugh and Harriet isn’t too far behind. They are both wise beyond their years.

On seeing Edrina home, Clay meets her mother Dara Rose. We see that Dara Rose is doing the best she can, under the circumstances, to take care of her family. Clay hopes to find himself a good woman and settle down. Maybe Dara Rose will be that woman.

At one point in the story, Clay stops by with two letters for Dara Rose. You get the indication that these two letters may change Dara Rose’s life – you will need to continue reading the story if you want to find out if this is true or not. Clay is definitely the hero of the story – he is a man that protects women, children, and animals (definitely my kind of hero).

During a snow storm, Clay comes into the jail to find his cousin Sawyer. But Clay is none too happy about the reunion. Will Sawyer get his own story?

Dara Rose also gets some bad news two weeks before Christmas. Our hero shows up to make things better for her. The reader will be able to tell that Clay is going to be great for the Nolan family – he’s just what they need.

This is a historical romance with more on the romance and less on the sex – the story doesn’t need it. The reader will want to turn the page just to watch the connection between Clay and Dara Rose blossom. You will also want to see what Edrina and Harriet get into.

Linda gives the reader a love story that builds over time. Any sex between the main characters comes toward the end – which is the perfect place for it to occur. She also adds a nice Christmas message into the storyline.

You will be very pleased to add this book to your collection. This book can be read on its own but if you enjoyed it, you may want to go back and read her other books in the McKettrick series. If you follow this link you can see a list of all Linda’s books by series.

Only Mine is Dakota’s story, the first story of the Hendrix triplets in the Fool’s Gold series.

Heroine: Dakota Hendrix can't have kids and she wants one so she’s in the process of adopting. Meanwhile there isn’t a guy on her radar (could be because of the man shortage) and she’s doing a favor for the mayor by being the contact person between the town and the new reality TV show being filmed there.

Hero: Finn Anderson is the opposite. He doesn't want kids after raising his twin brothers for so long. He's a pilot with a business in Alaska. He’s in town to force his stupid twin brothers back to college and off the dumb reality show they’re trying out for, but of course, as they’re twins they are automatically voted on and once they are they’re not leaving. He’s an overprotective brother, but a solid good guy.

The Twins:

Sasha: In a word - metrosexual. It doesn’t take more than his name to peg him as a character. He wants to be famous and he’s willing to do what it takes to get there including pretending a wild romance with Lani who is also interested in the same thing.

Stephen: He wants out of small town Alaska and the best thing for that is to follow Sasha onto this dating reality show. In the process he’s matched with an older woman (as un-cougar as they get) and he really digs her (can we say hot?).

Review: I wasn’t really into the main romance. It could be because it reads friends-to-lovers, a trope I’ve never been behind. And Dakota getting pregnant was too predictable. I was hoping a miracle pregnancy wouldn’t enter the picture, because it made the story highly unrealistic. It took care of the angst and depth to Dakota’s character in one too neat package.

I also thought it was unrealistic that Finn who didn’t want kids after raising his brothers after their parents’ deaths would jumped back into raising kids again so soon even if he loved Dakota. He’s never had a chance to be a carefree adult and I felt he really deserved it.

As far as the side romance goes, it really upstaged the main romance in my opinion. I loved their first date. The two of them had a lot of depth and were cute. They could easily have had their own stand alone.

Main Characters:  Jake Taggert, contractor and single father.  Katherine Richetti, business woman with magical abilities. 

Setting:  Halloween time.  This is perfect since Kat is a witch.

Kat and Jake meet as destiny comes calling.  Kat, of course, doesn't want it - bad timing.  She goes to talk to her Nonna and comes back to find someone on her porch.  Rayka gives Kat a conscience and she tells Jake what is going on.  But Rayka makes him a typical male, he doesn't believe her.  It's funny to watch Jake's confusion as to what he is going to do about Kat.

Jake is also intrigued by her.  I love how Rayka makes Jake a man who is also shy.  He also finds Kat a little quirky.  But, just like most men, he can't accept what cannot be explained logically.  Our author is good.  She puts a little "wrench" in the picture, an ex-wife (and as you read you will get to see why).

Then we get to see their first kiss.  For those that love romance, the kiss starts off sweet and then explodes from there.  But then of course they come to their senses.

Rayka also gives the reader a nice family moment when Kat meets Jake's son for the first time.  Rayka also includes another tender moment between our love birds.  It starts out very innocently and then heats up pretty quickly.  Then we see one of those perfect timing moments and it's one that you can just picture happening.

The first sex scene fits in perfectly - our author doesn't force it to happen.  What I love about this story is that even though it is short, the sex scenes don't take over.  And Jake, being our typical male, has to screw things up.  Rayka did not create anything that didn't seem believable.  Just like in real life, the parents get involved and try to fix things.

Rayka has two minor characters - Gina and Eric.  Their story will be out in December.  You will not want to miss this sequel.

It will be interesting to see if Jake and Kat make a reappearance in "Enchanted Desire".

A Hellion in Her Bed is book two of the Hellions of Halstead Hall series by Sabrina Jeffries. The Sharpe family consists of five children raised by their grandmother. Their parents died under mysterious circumstances which set tongues wagging throughout the ton and shadowed their lives growing up. When all the children were grown but exhibited no signs of finding partners and settling into married life and babies, their grandmother decided to do something about it. Her ultimatum dictated that they all had to wed by the end of the year or be disinherited.

Lord Jarret couldn’t be more disgusted that his older brother, Lord Stoneville capitulated so easily to their grandmother and was now honeymooning with his new bride. Determined not to yield to the old broad, Jarret strikes a new bargain with his grandmother. He will manage the Plumtree brewery for a year, without her interference, in exchange for his inheritance which he plans to use to save his other siblings from the unhappy task of following their grandmother’s dictates.

When he meets Annabel Lake, of Lake Ale, a young single woman, he’s immediately suspicious of his grandmother’s involvement. Her proposition of combining forces to brew an October ale to take to the Dutch East India Company was equally ludicrous and foolhardy. If all went well all the brewery’s troubles (and his own) would be taken care of permanently. If not, he would lose everything. Against his gambling nature, he turns her down, but her second proposition based on a wager was too tempting to turn down.

Both are determined, competent, family oriented characters with a passion for brewing. Both have secrets and hidden depths. The true question is, are both willing to gamble for love?

As a complete side note: Some of the cutest paraphernalia came with this book when I got it in the mail. There were interviews in the Parasol Papers for both the hero and heroine, a letter to the editor of the papers from the hero and heroine, a little how-to on beating a gambling rogue at cards, and a deck of playing cards with the book’s cover on them. There were more cute things describing book one of series too. I thought it was excellent marketing and lots of fun to read too.

Life changing experiences are what make a person, and in Blair Nightingale's case they can be for the worse. When her husband, Larry dies, she is hurt and distraught by what happened, but it is what occurs after that brings about the change in the story. She finds out what Larry has been doing over the past few years and the debt he was in as a result – now that debt has passed onto her, she has no idea what she is going to do about it.

Blair has had everything she had ever wanted, and more, living the rich Silicon Valley lifestyle, it is all she has ever known, until now when she has to budget for herself and her child Rebecca; she has gone from having it all to having nothing and living on what she brings in herself. This life she has never known before, and it hurts just as much as Larry’s death did.

What will she do about her poor new predicament?

The chocolate in the title refers to what her daughter says at the beginning about having too much chocolate and it not being enough. Her mother has been like that, she’s had the riches, the rich husband and the nice plush house and endless money, but now that it’s stopped, she is a different person because of it. She just hopes that her daughter is unaffected by her problem.

Baking cupcakes was something that always got her out of the blues she felt before, when her grandmother used to bake them for her, and now she does the same thing, bakes them for her and her daughter, but with a difference.

George, a man she doesn’t get on with, but who was Larry’s best friend, she blames him for Larry’s heart attack. She thinks he turned him into a workaholic when it wasn’t good for him. She felt he was already a successful man anyway, so why would he want to jeopardize their relationship by overworking. She loathes him, yet he helped her when her waters broke, before she gave birth to her daughter. She has to wonder if he is such a bad man after all when he wanted to help her. He was about to reveal all about her husband’s mistake with his finances, but never got the chance to tell her.

The fact is she feels resentful at George as he got to see more of Larry than she did, and it hurts her more than ever now that he’s dead. She is trying to get over it, but is finding it hard when George seems to want to come over and treat her – she thinks its guilt, but is she missing something, the way he takes her and her daughter out for dinner and wants to make sure they are alright.

Geraldine’s world of two halves, the rich and the ordinary show what life can be if two people get together under the most awful circumstances. She has managed to create a beautiful story that touches the heart, and stimulates the emotions in a way that is rarely seen.

For Peter Samuels life isn't the bed of roses he thought it would be. Not when his wife had succumbed to the brain tumor that took her life so early. He did not envision a life without her, where he would be left to bring up their children who were already growing up enough to know what death really is, and the heartache it can cause in the family.

A year later and he is still taken by her memory and her untimely death, and the effect it has had on them. He had always loved her, never lapsed into wanting another woman on the side; thoughts of infidelity were too far from his mind - he was one of those rare men who would never even want to cheat. He was a family man, who cared about his wife and his children and there isn't a moment goes by when he doesn't think about her or the fun times in their life he shared, and he wishes she had never gone. At least for him she has not gone from his memory, and it is some consolation he can live with.

There is the matter of the children, as he wants to give them the life they have grown accustomed too, but there is also the issue of him being alone most of the time when he is with them. He is still grieving inside, and isn't looking for another woman to share his life with as that would feel like someone stepping into his wife’s shoes to take her place, and that is something he cannot do, and expects his children would not want either.

Love and romance is a strange thing, though, and when he isn't looking for it, love arrives in the form of Kimberly Wolfe, an old friend of Peter and Lydia, his late wife. An encounter with her on New Year where they talk about old times, he thinks he might be falling for her - when they kiss, it seems like the right time to take a chance on loving again, but what will he think if he does, and more importantly what will the children think about him if he does decide to take Kimberly as his new girlfriend - is it too soon for love to blossom after such a terrible heartache?

This is an emotional book just like the previous one in the series where the protagonist remembers his past with the woman he loved, even if it was only a year ago. He can still feel the trauma of his wife's death, and the impact it had on his family. He isn't a man however; who feels he has shed enough tears over her, and wants to just carry on with his life. He isn't that selfish, and it shows in the novel. Karen Wiesner does an excellent job of drawing the reader into the mind of the man, Peter, who for so long has been alone and living in a void where his wife was so much a part of his life.

What he didn't realize was Kimberly was his rock, the one woman he could count on to help him out when he needed her after Lydia's death. Even his business might have fallen by the wayside and collapsed if she had not helped him and got him back on his feet. He has a lot to thank her for, and one of them is her being there when times were hard - but he didn't expect to share his life with her as his girlfriend, though even that, as the reader will be able to see, will take some getting used to.

Summary: NYC radiologist Dan Davenport moves to small town Forever, Texas to fulfill his dead brother’s promise to become the town doctor. There he meets single mother Tina Blayne who’s working at becoming an accountant and winds up as his secretary/office administrator. They think they have each other pegged, but do they?

Review: I’m not a big fan of doctor plots so that really affected my reading of the story. I also didn’t like how the single mother has a sick child in the story just because the hero’s a doctor. Too cliché and rarely do I like the sickness trope that brings the main couple together because one takes care of the other (or in this case the kid.) I also felt Dan’s inner angst about his brother and why he was in Forever was a little convoluted and cookie cutter.

What I did like was all the people in the small town coming together to help get his home ready before he arrived (though you’d think they would’ve done this before he got there – except the point was to show him small town hospitality) and Dan’s thoughts where he wondered if they were helping because they thought to barter their help as handymen for his medical services. Too funny!
