This is book 17 of the “Virgin River” series.

Brie Valenzuela used to be an Assistant District Attorney. We find her in a coffee shop waiting to meet a witness. She is doing this as a favor for a good friend. Conner Danson is that witness. Brie starts off giving him a couple of warnings. One of which is about not “hooking up”. Now when have our heroes ever listened to that little bit of information?

Leslie Petruso steps into the bar where Conner is seen having a meal. She’s there to meet Paul Haggerty about a possible job. She’s been hurt and is looking to make a fresh start in a new town. What better place to start over than in Virgin River.

Robyn, good writer that she is, has both Leslie and Conner working for the same company. What better way to get to know each other and disregard Brie’s advice. There’s an instant connection but because of a little misunderstanding, on Conner’s part, he stays away from Leslie. Now how long do you think that will last?

Leslie’s ex, Greg, has a habit of showing up. He’s definitely a strange character. In my mind he’s a narcissist. I say she’s better off without him but you will have to read the story and see if you agree with me. Since starting over in Virgin River, Leslie has learned to hold her own. She deserves better.

Oh, Robyn is good about having Greg keep coming back into the picture. He reminds me of a “running gag” in a movie. He’s definitely the comic relief of the piece. You have to commiserate with Leslie at ever having been married to that guy. He’s so self- absorbed! You have to wonder if he walks around with a mirror in his pocket. I would definitely love to know how Robyn created this character. He’s most certainly one of a kind.

Conner has found a way to get on Leslie’s good side. As you read, he asks her out and you definitely will not want to miss it. I wouldn’t mind someone doing that for me. Robyn always has her characters do things that are totally plausible. I applaud her for her creativity.

Robyn doesn’t make this story just about Conner and Leslie. We get to see brother and sister, Brie and Jack, interact with each other. You can tell that they love each other. We also get to see the love Conner has for his sister, Katie. Leslie also has a great relationship with her parents.

I have to say that Leslie offended me a little. Her parents are in their sixties but Leslie gives me the impression that they are one step away from a nursing home. But once you meet them that is the furthest thing from the truth. Robyn shows us that you’re never too old to have a great time with your significant other.

What I love about Robyn’s Virgin River series is that she makes it a very comfortable community. It sounds like a place where I would love to live. It is a community where everyone takes care of each other. Even if it’s a place you wouldn’t want to live in, you would certainly want to at least visit.

When I got to the ¾ mark in the book, Robyn puts in a little surprise. She gives us some suspense that you don’t see coming. She has definitely piqued my interest at this point. I definitely have to continue reading so that I can see how everything plays out.

Robyn has a great addition to her “Virgin River” series. Her characters build over the time of the story. She shows us that community is important and they will be there to stand behind you when things get tough. It’s a good feeling book and one that you will want to read again and again. It also prepares you for her next book that is coming out in March of this year.

This story is written in the first person.

We see that Faith Bettincourt and her friends are not exactly human. But she has a human job working in a hospital. She’s a charge nurse in the Children’s ICU unit. Her friend Lisa is a succubus who’s also a nurse. Faith is also the youngest daughter of the devil.

As you read, you’ll notice that as a succubus Lisa isn’t very good at it. If you’re a fan of the series Drop Dead Diva, you can almost picture April Browlby (character: Stacy Barrett) as Lisa – it seems to be a perfect fit. Lisa is just as “dippy” as Stacy is.

Faith isn’t your typical looking girl either – she’s a demon off the old block. She can also do some things that we can’t do like teleport from one place to another. She also has a crush on her next door neighbor, Matt. As you read, you will see that they start a relationship. But even Matt is not all that he seems.

Faith’s brother Tolliver is a major pain. He’s also the one that made Lisa into a succubus. But Faith is different from most demons – she has a conscience. Not your typical demon. Although Patricia has made all her characters different from what I thought they would be – in a good way.

Faith is coming out of a coffee shop and who should she bump into but none other than her sister, Hope. Hope isn’t any better than the brother. As I continue reading, I can definitely see the actors from “Drop Dead Diva” playing the characters in Patricia’s book. It would make a great Lifetime movie or series. I would definitely watch.

If I could cast the part of the devil, I would love to see Steve Martin in the part. For the mother, I could see Diane Keaton. And of course Faith would have to be Brooke Elliot (character: Jane Bingum). Jane’s demeanor would fit Faith’s perfectly.

Patricia also gives us some mystery and suspense. This is all a great mix. It’s what keeps us reading from the beginning of the story all the way to the end. You have no choice but to read the whole story – it’s that good. As I was reading, there were parts that I just had to laugh.

Don’t let the title of this story fool you. It’s definitely not a dark story with some sex thrown in. It’s a very funny tale with romance thrown into the mix. This is definitely a story that you may want to read more than once. I went into reading this thinking this would be a book to read around Halloween – boy was I wrong!

This is the 8th book in the Dreaming of the Wolf series, and the first one I have read. Each book can act as a stand alone and the author does a good job of explaining the rules of the Lupus Garou pack life, but I didn’t feel as invested in it as I probably would have if I had started with the first book.

When I first started this book I really didn’t want to finish it. Our smexy alpha hero Jake and the heroine, Alicia have an instant connection and are having hot outdoor sex by chapter 4. I have no problem with that, but it seem on every page one of them was thinking how much they liked the other, but nothing could come from it because:

A.) She isn’t one of us, we don’t date humans we only have one night stands with them, or

B.) I don’t have time for love I have to avenge my mother’s death.

I wanted to smack them both. The whole story is cliché and there really wasn’t much depth to it. The plot the romance was built around was weak, and I know what you are thinking…this is a PNR, the plot isn’t important. I know this, and there is an audience for this type of PNR, but it just isn’t me.

That being said…I found myself starting to get interested in a secondary character, Tom. He is the brother of Jake and Darien and by the end of the book the only one that hasn’t found his mate. I was able to connect with him unlike the other characters. Maybe because he wasn’t pining and whining over a woman <G>. Matter of fact, I liked him enough to hope the next book in this series is about him. I want to see him get his HEA.

So, I am giving this 3 stars because Tom found his way into my heart and made me want to read his book. Like I said earlier, this just isn’t my type of PNR, but I’ve read some other reviews and lots of people love it, which means it’s me, not you Dreaming of the Wolf <G>.

Heroine: Joanna Veron is somewhere around 19. In her father’s world she plays at being a high maintenance vapid beauty, but inside she’s really just a sweetheart looking for a way out of her father’s lifestyle (without having to go to her perfectly nice uncle) ever since a particularly bad incident when they were living in Australia where they swindled a youngish man named Peter out of a lot of money. She extracts a promise from her father to never use her in such a manner again, but of course Denys doesn’t hold to it for long.

Hero: Vassos Gordanis (I see his name and think vaseline) is somewhere in his 30s. He’s out for revenge against Denys and Joanna (though of course she’s clueless.) When he wins Joanna in a high stakes poker game he believes he has the chance to accomplish both punishments as he believes Joanna is Denys mistress. Obviously he’s not buying the “she’s my niece” they both claimed ever since Joanna joined her father on his jaunts around the gambling dens of the world. (Why does Joanna allow this? Gross.)

Favorite Moment: The first and second time they make love when he learns of her innocence (read virginity surprise!) and then tries to teach her about lovemaking which she tries so hard to hate ... There’s flavors of Stockholm Syndrome in this, but honestly it worked for me because there’s also the play on the Persephone myth.

Missed Opportunity:
If I remember right they were talking about her real relationship to Denys, but it could also have easily alluded to her virgin state.

Vassos: Why didn't you tell me?
Joanna’s answer should have been: Would you have believed me?

It seems like a perfectly standard response, but it never came up.

TSTL Ending: Why did the HEA have to include a flowery all is forgiven resolution between Joanna and Denys? What a crappy way to tie it off. Sometimes splitting family units is okay and in this case her dad is such a scumbag there’s really no way I’d buy his remorse and sudden “Oh shut up” speech to his new wife (whom he married right after Joanna was taken by Vassos to avoid his debts and to get the hell out of dodge, the bastard didn’t even look for her to get her back.)

Rating: ★★★★☆ - I know the rating seems incongruent with the story's flaws, but I'm also factoring in the *guilty pleasure* I got out of it, because what worked, worked really well for me.

In the third installment of the Casa Dracula series, Milagro finds out that marrying into a vampire family isn’t nearly as glamorous or easy as one might think. The Council has a bunch of hoops she has to jump through and the more she learns about them the less appealing it becomes and the more estranged she and Oswald are.

It should have been as easy as signing some papers and all the extra security Oswald wanted her to have would have been bestowed. Instead they want her to renounce her American citizenship for Vampiric citizenship and abstain from sex with her fiancé until after the wedding. What business is it of theirs anyhow? If that wasn’t enough they stick her with a vampire wedding coordinator for the family side of the ceremonies! Can you guess who they got? Cornelia, Corny, Ducharme.

Corny claims to be on Milagro’s side but she’s sticking Millie with all sorts of unpleasant tasks – creating a vampire fruitcake and sewing wedding clothes for herself and Oswald. Then while borrowing Cornelia’s car to run wedding errands the car quits and Millie nearly dies. Police get involved and Oswald doesn’t believe her when she says she’s not acting paranoid… but it’s not paranoia if everyone seems to be out to get you.

One of the things Millie is most concerned about is the bloodletting that Oswald seems to expect once they get married. She hasn’t been able to stand getting cut up and licked since Ian saved her with is blood. She’s also not interested in cutting Oswald and half the time she doesn’t realize her own strength and hurts him. When she runs into Ian she tries to deal with her issues and get him out of her system at the same time – it leads to an unexpected revelation – that Ian has a heart and Milagro can indeed break it.

Outside of wedding plans, Millie is ghostwriting for Don Pedro. While the job is about her writing his memoir, she’s fabricating everything. Joseph Alfred Joseph, someone she met while setting up the deal with Pedro, comes to visit and gets involved with Corny. Oswald wants to hire a new partner and expand his business, something that really bothers Milagro and the two fight over it among other things.

At every turn, instead of bringing them together, the wedding seems to be breaking them up and worse Millie’s confused about her feelings for Ian and Oswald’s parents dislike her with a burning passion. What’s a girl to do?

Summary: Jessie Taskill is a prostitute who is known as “The Harlot of Dundee.” She has gotten this name because she enjoys her work and doesn’t just lie there. Jessie gets into a fight in a bar with another prostitute over a client. When the other woman realizes that Jessie is going to win she accuses Jessie of being a witch. Jessie is then sent to jail.

She really is a witch and is ready to cast a spell to escape her cell when a priest comes to visit with her. Gregor Ramsey has come dressed in priest robes to see Jessie because he has a proposition for her. He will help her escape in exchange for her to help him get revenge on his enemy.

Review: This sure isn’t anything like Pretty Woman. The world that Jessie lives in is a crude one and this book reflects that. The first view that Gregor (and the reader) has of Jessie is of her bare behind while she is fighting the other prostitute.

There are all kinds of sex here: straight, lesbian, gay and threesome. Since this book was from Harlequin’s Spice line, I wasn’t sure if this was even going to be a love story. I was almost halfway through the book before I came to care about either Jessie or Gregor. (It took stories of their difficult pasts and seeing affection between them to make it happen.)

Overall: Mostly erotica and some of it coarse, but once the love starts the story becomes interesting.

The Prince of Midnight was recommended to me by Anime June while guest blogging about My (Not-So-Secret) Favorite Romance Character Types because the hero was damaged and delicious.

I believe this romance also fulfills my lust of big age differences. I can’t remember how old the heroine was (17 maybe?) but the hero’s retired at 33, painting and sculpting in an old castle in France with Nemo a tamed wolf for company by the time Leigh Strachen tracks him down to help her avenge her family’s brutal destruction and murder.

Sophocles Trafalgar (poor guy, luckily he goes by the initials S.T. most of the time) Maitland is a partially deaf ex-highwayman who couldn’t walk a straight line if his life depended on it. When caught in an explosion he lost not only part of his hearing but also his balance. He’s prone to headaches, dizziness, and nausea.

S.T. is a completely charming, dashing, tripping all over himself hunk of a hero. He’s the romantic in the relationship as the heroine is an emotionally walled-off ice princess. With Leigh constantly sneering at him, holding him in contempt, mocking his efforts, and telling him he’s useless I’m surprised S.T. stuck with her, but he does because he knows she’s been hurt and needs a champion.

In fact the more she puts him down and humiliates him the more S.T. is determined he is to go with her, protect her, and prove her wrong. He wants to be her hero and against all odds he manages to steal her ice cold heart and warm it with his own.

There’s some religious cultism in the novel, which one should be aware of before starting. The bad guy, the Right Reverend James Chilton, sets himself up as some great religious man with a direct line to God. He has convinced through trickery, showmanship, and charisma the rest of the town—which consists mostly of TSTL females and a dozen or so men—to follow him and do all that he says. It reminds me Jonestown Massacre where everybody was following Jim Jones blindly and drinking the Kool-Aid. Lucky for Chilton’s followers, the Prince of Midnight was there to protect them from their own stupidity.

The Prince of Midnight is an emotionally intense read as both the hero and heroine have transformations. I almost cried reading S.T.’s pleading to not pour acid in his remaining good ear. When Leigh found out and beat the crap out of the Dove of Peace for following this order I cheered her on… it was so sad thinking that Leigh finally admit to herself and to S.T. that she loved him only for him not to be able to hear the words.

Another intense scene which comes earlier in the novel is his taming two badly mistreated horses. He does it once on his own and then instructs Leigh on how to do it with the more hurt of the horses. When the abused horse begins to trust her, she cracks and falls to pieces realizing she loves the horse… and possibly though she won’t admit it yet, S.T. too.

It’s too good to miss. Thanks AJ!

Ms. Donovan has written a gripping suspense- thriller meant to charm and chill her readers. During the day you’ll run background checks on everyone you know and meet. Nights will offer no respite, bringing only maniacal laughter with its starlit skies.

Recommendations: If you enjoyed the movies Touched by Evil, Sleeping with the Enemy, and Enough you’re going to enjoy this novel. It’ll also appeal to readers who enjoy mystery, suspense, thrillers, and anyone who watches the television show C.S.I.

Michael Alan DeVeccio (hero) has a net worth of 49 billion dollars. He’s the CEO of the DeVeccio Empire (a thriving construction company) which builds luxury resorts. Mr. DeVeccio has it all! The drop-dead good lucks, a twenty-four room mansion, servants, sports cars, everything a man could want; he’s the epitome of the crème de la crème. There’s only one thing he wants, yet doesn’t have; an heir.

Margot Montgomery (heroine) is a golden haired beauty. She’s self-sufficient, has a wonderful career, caring friends, and a loving family. As head curator of a Mexican art museum, her career is her passion. The only passion missing from her life is the romantic kind.

When Margot and Michael meet sparks will fly, and romance will bloom. Until a 10 year old unsolved murder begins to unravel. Author’s strength lies in her ability to show the progression of the Slasher’s psychopathic tendencies.

My thoughts: It’s eerie when someone drugs Margot with hallucinogenic drugs. And when the murderer’s last hold on reality slips, the emergence of his different identities is purely sinister.

Favorite scene: Detective Santiago knows the gravity of keeping duty and desire as far from each other as possible. When he’s no longer capable of hiding his feelings for Margot, he’ll let her know. Mmm-hmm, no question!

I had some issues with Cruz Rodriguez, the hero of the story. First, he’s paying his nasty evil father blackmail money like a little kid with a secret when he’s supposed to be extremely powerful and self-confident now. Second, and more importantly he eschews all contact with his daughter, Kendra. He clearly doesn’t want to be a dad and this is waved away like it’s no big deal because he doesn’t want to be like his evil father. Grr…

This is not a marriage of convenience plot, but it should have been. Lexi Titan needs 2 million dollars to pay off a loan that was called. Cruz offers it to her in exchange for bringing him into the “first families” and elite tier of Texas Society. He wants them to be engaged (with sex – not negotiable – my thoughts: tacky and in bad taste on his part worse when she accepts) and he wants to be introduced to potential trophy wives so that when they ultimately separate he can move on with ease. Ugh.

Lexi and the rest of the Titan girls have daddy issues too. Daddy Titan pits them all against each other because with him it’s all or nothing and no in-between. Where she’s unwilling to trust her sister’s with her problems she easily accepts Cruz, bringing him into her personal and social world at the same time. She's also a strong advocate of Kendra, which is nice.

….Spoilers ahead….

Skye’s story will be like Jane Austen’s Persuasion which will be interesting. I’m looking forward to that too. Izzy’s not so much. Dana’s either – she goes for weak men and while I know her story will be flipped and the hero will be a strong man, I’m not particularly drawn to her.

I really liked the plot that will fuel the remaining novels. The whole thing with Garth, their evil half brother is pretty exciting. I can’t wait to see where that goes. I’ve picked up the next in the series to read just because of it. I can’t wait to see what stunts he pulls next. I’m almost rooting for him – how crazy is that? It would be nice to have it twist and prove he’s a good guy, but that would probably take some work.

On a side note I just love the cover.

I'll be the first to tell you I'm not a fan of the love triangle for many reasons. The first and foremost reason is because I feel it's just a ploy by an author to fuel the angst and drama of a mediocre story. Haymore proves me wrong. She does not do this. The love triangle is a valid part of the plot and wholly integral with the storyline. She approaches the love triangle in a very unique manner. I don't want to spoil anyone, because it's so different than anything I've encountered before in my readings.

Another reason I have trouble with the love triangle situation is the waffling. I simply don't get it. I'm told this is because I haven't been in one and until I have triangles are hard to appreciate or sympathize with. If you're like me you probably think it's very black and white and very little gray. In my head, I know it's gray. I know that it is possible to love two people at once, but the Grinch side of me feels that if you can't make a choice between them then you don't love either one enough and should let both go. Haymore made me feel the conflict that Sophie, who is in the middle, goes through. I appreciate her position and I sympathize with her, something that is way out of the norm with me.

I have a feeling that a second read through will make it a better read, because I know where it's going. I was looking at all the wrong things in the book the first time and therefore was anxious and worried about how the plot was developing, certain that Haymore was going to bungle it. I just couldn't see how it was going to work out.

Haymore surprised me, the ending surprised me, and that says something. It made me reevaluate the whole book and all my complaints and worries held no weight.

A fan of the love triangle will be placing this novel on their favorite shelf. Someone who like me, needs a little persuasion about the loving the love triangle can read this and appreciate it. Who knows, it may hook you so completely you can't wait to grab a hold of another love triangle!
