What is paranormal romance?
Well we can easily define paranormal romance as subgenre of romance. But what is it really? Paranormal romance combines the supernatural world with that of the real, the natural, the plain. One lover is sure to be something special and the other lover is special because they are so plain; something is found in their ordinariness that strikes a cord with the extraordinary lover.
More than not these stories take place in America, especially when dealing with vampires, but it’s not a requirement for the genre. Paranormal romance usually blends mystery, thriller, or suspense as part and parcel of its tale. You could consider these novels to be more than a bit Gothic in theme. Anita Blake Vampire Hunter and the Twilight Saga are two such series that can be found within the category of paranormal romance.
Why do people like it so much?
The sales of paranormal romance have risen over the years. It is not uncommon to find several titles of paranormal fiction in romance aisles. Why is that? As I said when discussing Edward and Bella in the Twilight books, I believe it is because we are all craving that extraordinary romance.
As with time travel romances, paranormal romances that involve vampires have that glorious advantage of a love out of time. One person waits, separate from the time stream of the normal world with all its stresses and hectic schedules just for you. Waters run deep in the one that has been waiting, he (or she) knows just what it is like to live a small eternity in loneliness and now that you’ve been found, you won’t be let go. He (or she) will love you forever.
Besides vampires what fits into this category?
Magic users, lycanthropes (like werewolves), selkies, fairies, ghosts, superhuman capabilities (like flying), gods and goddesses, and angels and demons are all perfectly acceptable.

Great article!
I pretty much only read Paranormal books now.
Thank you! I have a pretty big collection of paranormal myself. I blame Buffy the Vampire Slayer for getting me involved in the first place. lol
I think there is a group of people in this world…romantics who are tired of the way love has become so scripted. We long for the illogical..silly…crazy wild ride we dream of love being. A feeling so deep that it is stronger than any physical desire… Likely the reason it has moved into the supernatural is because a lot of us have become so cynical in this world. Love is more about the clothes a person wears, the job they have… it is almost as if we have had to imagine a whole new reality to find what we so desire…we need to escape into the imagined to find what our hearts so desire..
I need some information on orbs…also paranormal romance?…My daughter and her best friend and I have been taking photos with ALOT of orbs showing up in them…different color orbs have shown in diferent places..a large green orb was clearly sitting on one of her friends shoulders at a grave yard…the girls like to go there at night due to seeing the orbs in there photos. Is there anywhere we can send these photos and find out what they mean..if they are in any harm or are safe? My dad…my daughters grandfather passed away on January 24th 09…since this has happened it has been much worse. Pictures fly off the wall our dog acts strange at times..he was laying on the floor trying to squeeze himself under the couch..my daughter took a photo and there was a white orb to the left under the couch. Please email me as asoon as possible..I am concerned because they are always on the ouija board and recently my daughter was taking a picture of herself and there is clearly a woman with no eyes and a huge mouth going to the side like she ws screaming…she was in the room by herself. Thankyou..we have these photos.
