This is an old Harlequin Presents novel that was given to me by a friend’s mom. It’s pretty decent, but nothing exceptional. The basic premise that keeps the story going is obscurity, the constant questioning of motives. Not a big misunderstanding but just general ignorance - especially on the heroine's part. She can't make out the hero.
It stars your mysterious and hardened British businessman Saul Marston and Karen Lane who is the personal assistant/secretary for Ben Clark, the man whose business Saul is buying out and adding to his collection of companies.
Karen Lane is determined to see Ben Clark’s business make an impression on Saul. She wants Ben’s troubles to go away and to protect the jobs of everyone involved. Doing so will result in her own job loss (I don’t really get why because Ben would still be like a general manager but whatever not the point).
Saul is immediately taken by Clark’s Components and by Karen. Especially Karen. He does his best to make her think he’s not interested in the company so she’ll keep trying to sell him on it and therefore spend more time with him. He also invents lame reasons to have her attend a conference with all his heads of companies in Acapulco, Mexico.
On the way Ben suffers from an appendicitis and is rushed to treatment, effectively removing him from the story as a concern as Karen’s love interest. They were both thinking it but it was definitely too quiet a feeling to be anything other than deep friendship.
Liz Walker used to date Saul before marrying Harry Walker, one of his heads. She still wants to be Saul’s lover and tries to stir something up but he’s not buying it. This creates some obligatory friction between her and Karen.
Insert some badly written sex where you can’t really tell if they even managed to get off all their clothes and that basically sums up the whole novel. If you're looking for an older romance without a lot of drama this is it.

Keira's favorite type of heroes are blind, scarred, and tortured... yes, she understands those should be separate, but all 3 at once is also nice! She enjoys historical romances best and adores audio books because great narrators turn books into auditory/mental movies (and she loves her romantic dramas like Pride and Prejudice/North and South!)
