Rhys St. Maur is the type of hero that I love. He’s battle scarred, a little wounded, and in need of the right heroine to administer a little tender loving care. He’s the newly appointed Lord Ashworth and has come to see his land and leave again with a determination to forget his abusive past. One look at the heroine changes his mind – she’s a spitfire and he has an urge to get a little burnt. Rhys is also a firm believer in fate which irks the heroine to no end.
His heroine, Meredith (Merry) Lane Maddox, isn’t a heroine I really go for in part because she’s widowed and in part because she’s a woman with a long time crush on the hero. She can tell him she wants him, but she can’t make relationship decisions. It got annoying. Merry’s also an odd combination savvy and stupid: she basically single-handedly held the economy of the town together through her inn, The Three Hounds, and yet persists in keeping Rhys and his oodles of money far away from patronizing Buckleigh-in-the-Moor. Oh and she has intricate dealings with a smuggler… a man who wants to run Rhys out of town.
I can’t tell if there’s a May/December sort of age difference between them, and it hardly matters. Rhys was 17 when he left the village behind for good. Merry was between 8-14 as far as I could tell. I’m sure it was mentioned, I just can’t recall exactly.
Julian Bellemy appears strategically in the novel helping to further the trilogies long arc about discovering the murderer behind Leo Chatwick, the founder of the Stud Club, which the hero is a member of and also their friend the Duke from the first novel. We learn who the whore was who had been with Leo at the time of his death and there’s a new lead which gets followed leading to a discovery that shocks Bellemy. You don’t need to have read the first book to follow this book, Tess Dare does a good job filling in the details for you.

“Oh my God,” she cried, craning her neck a bit more. “Just look at the scrollwork on that ceiling.”
“To hell with the damned ceiling,” he growled…

Keira's favorite type of heroes are blind, scarred, and tortured... yes, she understands those should be separate, but all 3 at once is also nice! She enjoys historical romances best and adores audio books because great narrators turn books into auditory/mental movies (and she loves her romantic dramas like Pride and Prejudice/North and South!)
