Get into Bed with Sara Humphreys (Author Interview)

Sara Humphreys 1Keira: You’ve created a complex and captivating world of shapeshifters in your Amoveo Legend series. For those who aren’t fully familiar, please tell us a little bit about the Amoveo and the books in your series so far.

Sara Humphreys: Thank you! The Amoveo are a secret society of dream walking, telepathic shapeshfiters in search of their one true mate. They are made up of ten different animal clans and if they don’t find their pre-destined mate by the age of thirty they begin to lose their abilities and will die. They can only have children with their mate so for all of their strengths they’re actually a rather fragile race. If you kill one Amoveo, the mate dies and you wipe out the possibility of offspring. Until recently they thought their mate could only be another Amoveo. However, what they discover in UNLEASHED (#1) is that there are human/Amoveo hybrids who have been hidden around the world.

Keira: Let’s imagine that your world is reality! If there are shapeshifters among us, what would be some of those key signs or traits the Amoveo have?

SH: All Amoveo have large eyes, not freakishly big but strikingly beautiful. They’re all gorgeous (hey, why not?) and the men are tall and physically fit. They live among humans but would be secretive and most of them choose to live in rural areas so they can roam freely in their clan form when they want to.

Keira: Your heroine, Layla, has been avoiding her mate and is literally hiding from her destiny! What has made her put up these walls?

SH: She only knows a little bit about the Amoveo and none of it is good. As far as she knows, her mother was driven insane when she found out Layla’s father was a shifter and her father abandoned her. Her adopted siblings, also hybrids but from the Wolf Clan, had parents who suffered as a result of their mating too. Their father was murdered by his own people and their mother died when they were toddlers. Layla is under the impression that hooking up with an Amoveo man won’t end well and she resents that her life is left up to the fates.

Keira: What are some of the things about William you think readers will really love?

SH: He’s a stiff and I think they’ll enjoy watching Layla loosen him up. He’s all alpha-male and fiercely protective of her but he doesn’t force himself on her. I think his willingness to be patient is sexy.

Keira: When you’re not writing, what can we find you doing?

SH: If it’s work hours and if I’m not writing, then I’m working on the business of writing. (marketing, blogs, etc) If it’s home hours, then I’m cooking, cleaning or hanging with my boys. If it’s downtime then I’m diddling around the internet, reading (my TBR pile is huge) or watching a little television.

Keira: We love your videos of reviews and author interviews! Who have been some of your favorite authors to chat with (provide links)?

SH: Thanks! Sometimes I wonder if anyone watches those. My favorites? I can’t possibly pick one! So many of these folks have become my friends and I adore them all. That’s one of coolest things that has happened since I’ve been published. The friendships I’ve made have been such a gift! Here’s a link to my YouTube channel. Come on by! http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=UUTOaoH2_IDnF8Z8idCZmK7Q

Keira: What’s the most surprising thing that has happened to you since you’ve become a romance author?

SH: Aside from the wonderful friendships I’ve made with readers and authors, I’d have to say the ability to live my dream. I never thought I’d be able to do what I’m doing for a living. I wake up every, single morning and throw a prayer of gratitude to my guardian angels. I’m blessed in so many ways.

Keira: Please tell us where readers can find you on the web, and what’s coming next for you!

SH: I’m working on the fifth Amoveo Legend novel, UNCLAIMED, and the second vampire book from my Dead in the City series (look for book 1, Tall, Dark and Vampire in August 2013). I’m also excited to be branching out and trying a new genre! I have a contemporary romance series coming with Sourcebooks. The Holding Out for Hero series will feature men in uniform and I’m thrilled to try something new.

Thank you so much for hosting me here today! Readers can find me at:

Review: Untouched (Amoveo Legend, Book 2) by Sara Humphreys

Book 2, the “Amoveo Legend”

Kerry Smithson is a model and we see her helping her girlfriend, Samantha, get ready for her wedding. After the ceremony, the groom’s (Malcolm’s) friend Dante asks Kerry to dance. And then he makes her a promise. He’s not like any other man you’ve ever met before.

This story is going to take us on an interesting ride. All we can do is sit back and get comfortable and let Sara guide us through the adventures with Kerry and Dante. Their adventure begins in New Orleans. They have a connection that Dante is aware of but Kerry hasn’t figured it out yet. And the adventure is not all – danger is following Kerry. Plus they’re so hot together.

Dante then explains to Kerry what she really is. As you read, Sara has a way of telling the story of the Amoveo. Sara’s storytelling made it so that I didn’t want to put the book down. Everything follows a natural progression. Nothing is rushed – not the evil of the piece or their desire for each other. Evil has a name and it’s “the Punisher”. Once you read this story, you will find out where they got their name from.

I missed out on reading Samantha’s story but after reading Kerry’s, I have to go back and read the first book of the “Amoveo Legend”. It will also get me ready for the November release of “Untamed”. I can’t wait to see what Sara has in store for her readers next.

If you’re a person that likes to listen to music as you read, might I suggest that you listen to some nice smooth jazz. If jazz isn’t your thing, you could listen to the blues. There’s even zydeco to listen to. You may even want to check out some famous musicians that came from New Orleans. One man that comes to mind is Louis Armstrong.

You’ve started to get your mood set. You have the book, you’ve put on the music and now you need something to treat yourself with. You might try a beignets or maybe a praline for the sweet tooth. Now you need your drink. Let me suggest either a mimosa or a hurricane. Maybe you would prefer a coffee with your beignet. Now sit back and enjoy a great story.

And shock turns to terror as Samantha falls prey to the deadly enemy determined to destroy the Amoveo, who is hunting her down. With Malcolm’s help will she survive?

Review: I enjoyed reading this book, even though it wasn’t what I usually read. I liked the new twist on shape shifting, and most of the characters were very well written. However, sometimes everyone in the book seemed just a little to “perfect” on the outside. That said, it was an enjoyable book.

Likes:

  • Unleashed has a great plot. Don’t want to reveal too much!
  • The interesting take on shape shifting. Pretty cool.
  • Sara is very good at writing setting and imagery, you get absorbed in the reading once it gets going.

Dislikes:

  • As I said before, the characters seemed just a little too perfect. They’re all pretty, handsome or models. Of course this is a romance, so I guess it’s expected, but I was hoping for a little more.
  • The beginning was hard to get into which may deter some readers who can’t push through.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

The Characters Live Full-Time in My Head

Guest Post by Sara Humphreys, Author of Unleashed (Amoveo Legacy)

When I’m in the midst of writing a novel, the characters live full-time in my head. I know…that sounds totally bizarre and you’re probably wondering if my medication needs adjusting. However, it’s really quite sane and for me it’s a sign that the book and its characters are coming along nicely. In fact, if the hero and heroine aren’t lingering around in my mind, then it’s a sign that I should walk away from that story or that something is most definitely off.

For the past several months, I’ve been working diligently on Untamed, #3 in the Amoveo Legend series. However, sometimes life/kids/day-job etc. begins to take over and writing has to take a back seat. Well, let me tell you… both the hero and heroine started nagging at me to get back to their story. William and Layla were totally annoyed that I just left them hanging there with their love affair unresolved. Needless to say, they won and I got right back to their adventures. I’m just about finished with it and the two of them are sated…for now.

Sometimes it’s not a hero or a heroine who start begging for attention. Nope. Sometimes it’s a secondary character that starts angling for their own book. Oh yes. I’ve got two supporting hotties from Untamed who are currently vying for my attention. The question is… who do I give in to first?

The single biggest way that the creative process seeps into my own life is when I’m at a new place or I overhear a funny personal experience…those things can trigger some rich ideas for a novel. For example, a few months ago I was at the Waldorf Astoria for a black tie affair. Looking around that grand, ornate ballroom I couldn’t help but imagine various scenarios for my shifters.

Perhaps one of the Falcon clan members would shape shift and swoop down from the balcony? What if the heroine runs into her shoulda/coulda/woulda lover and they share a sparks-flying tango on the dance floor? That little alcove by the pay phone would make for an interesting lover’s tryst. The possibilities are limitless and you’ll see the results of that day’s imaginings in Undone (#4 Amoveo Legend).

In Unleashed (#1 Amoveo Legend) there are quite a few ‘real life’ influences that can be found. First and foremost, the novel is set at a beach house in Westerly, Rhode Island which is where my family has a home and I’ve been going up every summer for over twenty-five years. Samantha’s grandmother, Nonie, is named after my great-grandmother Helen Costigan and her personality is a compilation of both of my grandmothers. Many of my characters have monikers that can be found in our family tree because I like bringing some normal into my paranormal. I hope you’ll check out Unleashed and explore the dream-walking, telepathic, shape shifting world of the Amoveo.

Dream on…
