Review: Burning At Last by Crystal Rister

burning at lastReviewed by Fleur, of A Daily Romance

I expect ‘True Blood’ fans will enjoy the author Crystal’s world of heartless, rough cut vampires, one sexy, smooth shape shifter and an independent gal who may have met her match.

The story starts with the heroine in a scene of childhood bliss that is immediately followed by trauma; the loss of her parents and home by murder and arson. To escape the danger she is made to run from her home by her long time friend Jarroth Denton, who she will part from for 13 long years.

As it turns out, Jarroth is a shape shifter and after trying to track down his lost love over a decade later, he seems to be about to explode from raw primal sexual energy.

Excerpt:

“This is called the burning, love. It’s where life mates have not consummated their union, and it nearly takes over their entire being. Once we find our mate, the need to join is like consuming fire that cannot be denied. Having you ripped from me and then getting you back has reignited the burn to a scorching level. You are now a woman, no longer a girl, and my wolf wants you. Bad.”

But if that isn’t enough, you will believe ‘there is no aphrodisiac like escaping death by vampire’ after reading this novella……to describe the ensuing sex scenes as steamy is an understatement at best.

I’m wondering how much hotter can things get between the two protagonists in book 2?!?

The author has made a huge effort to make the life and relationship between a shapeshifter and a normal human seem realistic and I appreciated that. There are some scenes in this book that are more violent than I am use to, but taking into account that I am way more squeamish than most people, I think this is a great book and I quite liked it.

Review: Savage Hunger (Heart of the Jaguar, Book 2) by Terry Spear

savage hungerReviewed by Lynn Reynolds

This book picks up where book one left off. This is Maya Anderson’s story. She goes into a club where she comes across two real bad boys. David and Wade Patterson are on assignment at the same club. Then Maya seems to be causing something of a stir.

During the altercation, you will find that you just have to chuckle. I’m sure it’s not the most appropriate thing to do but you just won’t be able to help yourself. It also leaves you with a sense of anticipation. Terry always creates her shifters to be very sensual. But she also leaves you feeling that shifters may actually live amongst us.

And then Terry turns up the heat. Our author gives us just the right amount of romance, intrigue and sex. Plus she includes some great settings – in this case it is the country of Belize. Today (July 3) I found it interesting that she chose Belize – I watched two programs that made me think of this jaguar series.

I started my morning watching Good Morning America. They had Jack Hanna on and he had some wild babies with him. One in particular caught my attention since it was a 4-month old black jaguar. It puts Terry’s characters into perspective – the baby had such large paws and very sharp claws. The second show was on Animal Planet titled North America and the narrator was talking about an online poll where viewers (originally aired on Discovery Channel) got a chance to vote on destinations. Number 5 destination was none other than Belize.

Between the book and the series on Animal Planet it has left me wanting to go there for a visit. Plus I want to see if I could find any of those wild shifters lurking about. If you ever get a chance to visit there, what a great book to pack in your suitcase.

This was definitely another action packed page-turner. It also brought home how illegal trafficking of wild animals is something that needs to be stopped. I’m one of those people that hates to see anything caged. Wild animals need to be in there own environment roaming free. Animal Planet has another show titled Big Cat Diaries that I’ve been watching in repeats. I just love watching the cheetahs lounging in the trees. When I read about Terry’s jaguars, I can picture them doing the same thing.

I’m afraid that all I can tell you is that there will be another book in this series title Jaguar Heat. The bad news is that it’s not scheduled to come out until August of next year. In the meantime, it gives you plenty of time to get this book read and if you haven’t read book one you can get that one done too. Also, you may want to mark your calendar so that you remember a year from now that book three should be hitting shelves at your local bookstore.

Signs Your Man is a Shapeshifter

savagehungerGuest blog by Terry Spear, author of Savage Hunger

You know when your man could be a shapeshifter when:

  1. He installs a BIG pet door at your house and you don’t own a pet.
  2. He LOVES to get naked.
  3. He owns a handy dandy lock pick set—standard issue lupus garou variety. (This only counts for wolf shifters. Jaguars have to find another way in.)
  4. You find fur shed in the house and you don’t own a pet.
  5. You find big claw marks on the furniture and you don’t own a cat.
  6. He growls a lot.
  7. He purrs. (Big cat shifters only.)
  8. He wants to run in the woods. (Wolf shifters only.)
  9. He wants to run in the jungle. (Jaguar shifters only.)
  10. He’s got great stamina.
  11. Can climb trees. (Jaguar shifters only.)
  12. Super physical strength.
  13. Wants to be with only one woman for life.
  14. He’s protective.
  15. He’s insatiable.
  16. He’s a predator.
  17. And he loves the water.
  18. Did I mention he’s a hunk?

If you find your man has many of these qualities, you might have gotten lucky and have yourself a shifter for a hunk! If not, you might want to keep looking. They’re loveable, helpful, protective and courageous. They never back down in a fight.

Did I mention about the stamina? They put all those toned muscles to great use!

So what happens if we are lucky enough to come across both a jaguar shifter and a werewolf? How do we choose? Well, that’s the fun part!

And it all depends on you!

Review: Untouched (Amoveo Legend, Book 2) by Sara Humphreys

untouched sara humphreysReviewed by Lynn Reynolds

Book 2, the “Amoveo Legend”

Kerry Smithson is a model and we see her helping her girlfriend, Samantha, get ready for her wedding. After the ceremony, the groom’s (Malcolm’s) friend Dante asks Kerry to dance. And then he makes her a promise. He’s not like any other man you’ve ever met before.

This story is going to take us on an interesting ride. All we can do is sit back and get comfortable and let Sara guide us through the adventures with Kerry and Dante. Their adventure begins in New Orleans. They have a connection that Dante is aware of but Kerry hasn’t figured it out yet. And the adventure is not all – danger is following Kerry. Plus they’re so hot together.

Dante then explains to Kerry what she really is. As you read, Sara has a way of telling the story of the Amoveo. Sara’s storytelling made it so that I didn’t want to put the book down. Everything follows a natural progression. Nothing is rushed – not the evil of the piece or their desire for each other. Evil has a name and it’s “the Punisher”. Once you read this story, you will find out where they got their name from.

I missed out on reading Samantha’s story but after reading Kerry’s, I have to go back and read the first book of the “Amoveo Legend”. It will also get me ready for the November release of “Untamed”. I can’t wait to see what Sara has in store for her readers next.

If you’re a person that likes to listen to music as you read, might I suggest that you listen to some nice smooth jazz. If jazz isn’t your thing, you could listen to the blues. There’s even zydeco to listen to. You may even want to check out some famous musicians that came from New Orleans. One man that comes to mind is Louis Armstrong.

You’ve started to get your mood set. You have the book, you’ve put on the music and now you need something to treat yourself with. You might try a beignets or maybe a praline for the sweet tooth. Now you need your drink. Let me suggest either a mimosa or a hurricane. Maybe you would prefer a coffee with your beignet. Now sit back and enjoy a great story.

Review: The Cottage in the Woods by Lucy Felthouse

Reviewed by Lynn Reynolds

This is a F/F erotic short story.

Heidi is at the sink washing a bowl when she sees something out in her garden. Heidi lives in a little cottage far out in the wilderness. She finds that her nocturnal visitor is a fox. Something occurs as she goes out into the garden to investigate.

Ava has come to the cottage but we see that she’s injured. Heidi gives her a place to stay for the evening. Because this is a short story things move quickly between the two women. I found that this was more of a sensual story than an erotic story. I would have also liked to have seen more of the paranormal in the story.

If you are a fan of erotica you may be a little disappointed in not seeing more sex but remember that is what our imagination is for. If you’re looking for a sweet story where two women love each other than you won’t be disappointed. Being a short story, it may leave you wondering what happens between Heidi and Ava but you can create their ending.

If you have a short amount of time and you want a quick read, this would be a good story to choose. I have read a few of Lucy’s other stories and she never fails to grab my attention. If you are fan of the F/F genre you will enjoy reading The Cottage in the Woods.

Review: Lord of the Wolfyn (Royal House of Shadows, Book 3) by Jessica Andersen

Reviewed by Lynn Reynolds

Jessica Andersen’s Lord of the Wolfyn is book 3 of the “Royal House of Shadows Series”.

Our main characters are Prince Dayn who is the second son of the king of Elden. Alfreda Weston is a police officer who lives in Salem.

Right at the beginning, Jessica introduces the reader to the Wolfyn. They are ravenous shape shifters who are deadly beasts. Because of their habits, they need to be killed.

In this book, Dayn’s father can mind speak to him and tells him what must happen to the Blood Sorcerer (the evil element from books 1 & 2). We also see that Dayn is considered a hunter.

Reda lives in a town that is known as a magical town. But Jessica makes Reda a non-believer. We first see Reda reading a book and for some reason she feels a connection to a guy who has green eyes. While reading, Reda says a “spell” that she learned as a child. After saying this “spell”, Reda meets Dayn.

Jessica has Reda seeing things that no human should be able to see. It’s made so realistic that you feel it’s something that could possible happen to anyone. Then the action starts to happen.

You can almost hear Dayn’s snide attitude after his first confrontation with Reda. Reda doesn’t believe what’s going on – she hasn’t hear a word that Dayn said. Even with all that, she still agrees to help Dayn. Would we behave the same way?

Jessica then gives us their first kiss. But just as it starts getting good, Jessica gives Dayn a conscience. But she also has a way of having her main characters compliment each other. She gives them a past full of hurt. But there is also something else there that seems to draw them together.

There is a part in the story that Jessica has put an obstacle in their way. When Reda first views it, you can just about hear her comment. Dayn, being an alpha male, has an interesting way of getting her to cross that obstacle.

None of the sex scenes were forced. They just flow within the story. They are made to feel natural. Reda and Dayn loved with no expectations from the other. But the heat that is generated between the two continues throughout the story.

In Jessica’s book, she adds another evil element and her name is Moragh. Moragh is there to stop Dayn from fulfilling his objective. This prepares us for the fourth book – “Lord of the Abyss”.

You will definitely want to finish out the series.

Review: Dark Awakening (Dark Dynasties, Book 1) by Kendra Leigh Castle

Reviewed by Sharon S.

This story is set in a closed world. Vampires have divided into dynasties based on a powerful ancestor. Each dynasty has its own special powers and a distinctive mark that appears when you take their blood. The vampire society as a whole functions like a caste system with the “Highbloods”, the aristocracy, and the “Lowbloods” who are treated as slaves. The lowbloods are considered tainted blood and the lowest are the Cait Sith, a cat shifting vampire. Someone is killing off one of the oldest and most powerful dynasties and it looks like the Draculs (yes, Vlad is the head of this dynasty) are behind it, and a brutal war is about to erupt.

This story didn’t ever grab me. The overall plot was predictable and moved in a linear fashion. No plot twists or big reveals, especially considering how complex the world building was. A lot of research went into setting up the dynasties based on actual ancient characters, but I was never able to really buy into it and unfortunately I can’t give you any concrete reasons other than it just didn’t work for me.

Lilly, unknowingly, is a descendant of the ancient dynasty of Lilith that had been wiped out because of jealousy by another dynasty. Our hero, Tynan belongs to the Cait Sith race of vampires and they are considered nothing more than slaves. He is sent to bring her to his Queen to help in the fight against the Dracul. You have a destined queen and a lowly slave whose love will bring back the old ways where everyone is treated equally (expect for the werewolves who are in the next book). The romance between Lilly and Ty never captured my interest. Nothing set them apart from all the other stories out there.

It might just be the author’s writing style didn’t mesh well with me, but this just wasn’t a book for me. I suggest checking out other reviews to see if this one is for you.

Review: The Bride of Casa Dracula (Casa Dracula Book 3) by Marta Acosta

In the third installment of the Casa Dracula series, Milagro finds out that marrying into a vampire family isn’t nearly as glamorous or easy as one might think. The Council has a bunch of hoops she has to jump through and the more she learns about them the less appealing it becomes and the more estranged she and Oswald are.

It should have been as easy as signing some papers and all the extra security Oswald wanted her to have would have been bestowed. Instead they want her to renounce her American citizenship for Vampiric citizenship and abstain from sex with her fiancé until after the wedding. What business is it of theirs anyhow? If that wasn’t enough they stick her with a vampire wedding coordinator for the family side of the ceremonies! Can you guess who they got? Cornelia, Corny, Ducharme.

Corny claims to be on Milagro’s side but she’s sticking Millie with all sorts of unpleasant tasks – creating a vampire fruitcake and sewing wedding clothes for herself and Oswald. Then while borrowing Cornelia’s car to run wedding errands the car quits and Millie nearly dies. Police get involved and Oswald doesn’t believe her when she says she’s not acting paranoid… but it’s not paranoia if everyone seems to be out to get you.

One of the things Millie is most concerned about is the bloodletting that Oswald seems to expect once they get married. She hasn’t been able to stand getting cut up and licked since Ian saved her with is blood. She’s also not interested in cutting Oswald and half the time she doesn’t realize her own strength and hurts him. When she runs into Ian she tries to deal with her issues and get him out of her system at the same time – it leads to an unexpected revelation – that Ian has a heart and Milagro can indeed break it.

Outside of wedding plans, Millie is ghostwriting for Don Pedro. While the job is about her writing his memoir, she’s fabricating everything. Joseph Alfred Joseph, someone she met while setting up the deal with Pedro, comes to visit and gets involved with Corny. Oswald wants to hire a new partner and expand his business, something that really bothers Milagro and the two fight over it among other things.

At every turn, instead of bringing them together, the wedding seems to be breaking them up and worse Millie’s confused about her feelings for Ian and Oswald’s parents dislike her with a burning passion. What’s a girl to do?
