If you follow me on Twitter you may remember when I pointed out that things were getting pretty hairy for Taylor Lautner of Twilight who played Jacob Black in the first movie. There was some discussion and debate over if he would be allowed to continue on as Jacob in New Moon.
As Melissa Rosenberg, screenwriter of Twilight and New Moon, said, "Jacob is a totally different character in New Moon. He's a foot taller and huge — and he's supposed to look 25. It's really a question of whether or not the same actor can play the role." Rosenberg also noted, ''He has to play a romantic lead against Rob, who's a 22 year old man. That's a tall order.''
It will indeed be a tall order to fill. Jacob has to look like walking talking temptation in his human form and if you've seen Lautner, you know he can play the younger Jacob easily. His face is smooth, young, he looks like a teenage boy. But can he play a 25 year old looking Jacob Black?
There has been division within Team Jacob about Lautner's ability to portray Jacob. If you remember, I mentioned in my review of Twilight how many girls switched loyalties to Team Edward because they didn't think Lautner was appealing or worthy of the part as Bella's other romantic option.
As rumors go Steven Strait and Michael Copon were once thought to be making bids of their own to become New Moon's Jacob. Both look like they could pull off the part, but in the end the rumors were unsubstantiated.
About a week ago Summit Entertainment announced officially that Lautner will continue on as Jacob Black in New Moon. So how is he going to bulk up, grow taller, and lose the rounded baby face for a more rugged, sharp cheekbones, look? I don't know, but we'll find out.
