Get into Bed with Sara Humphreys (Author Interview)

Sara Humphreys 1Keira: You’ve created a complex and captivating world of shapeshifters in your Amoveo Legend series. For those who aren’t fully familiar, please tell us a little bit about the Amoveo and the books in your series so far.

Sara Humphreys: Thank you! The Amoveo are a secret society of dream walking, telepathic shapeshfiters in search of their one true mate. They are made up of ten different animal clans and if they don’t find their pre-destined mate by the age of thirty they begin to lose their abilities and will die. They can only have children with their mate so for all of their strengths they’re actually a rather fragile race. If you kill one Amoveo, the mate dies and you wipe out the possibility of offspring. Until recently they thought their mate could only be another Amoveo. However, what they discover in UNLEASHED (#1) is that there are human/Amoveo hybrids who have been hidden around the world.

Keira: Let’s imagine that your world is reality! If there are shapeshifters among us, what would be some of those key signs or traits the Amoveo have?

SH: All Amoveo have large eyes, not freakishly big but strikingly beautiful. They’re all gorgeous (hey, why not?) and the men are tall and physically fit. They live among humans but would be secretive and most of them choose to live in rural areas so they can roam freely in their clan form when they want to.

Keira: Your heroine, Layla, has been avoiding her mate and is literally hiding from her destiny! What has made her put up these walls?

SH: She only knows a little bit about the Amoveo and none of it is good. As far as she knows, her mother was driven insane when she found out Layla’s father was a shifter and her father abandoned her. Her adopted siblings, also hybrids but from the Wolf Clan, had parents who suffered as a result of their mating too. Their father was murdered by his own people and their mother died when they were toddlers. Layla is under the impression that hooking up with an Amoveo man won’t end well and she resents that her life is left up to the fates.

Keira: What are some of the things about William you think readers will really love?

SH: He’s a stiff and I think they’ll enjoy watching Layla loosen him up. He’s all alpha-male and fiercely protective of her but he doesn’t force himself on her. I think his willingness to be patient is sexy.

Keira: When you’re not writing, what can we find you doing?

SH: If it’s work hours and if I’m not writing, then I’m working on the business of writing. (marketing, blogs, etc) If it’s home hours, then I’m cooking, cleaning or hanging with my boys. If it’s downtime then I’m diddling around the internet, reading (my TBR pile is huge) or watching a little television.

Keira: We love your videos of reviews and author interviews! Who have been some of your favorite authors to chat with (provide links)?

SH: Thanks! Sometimes I wonder if anyone watches those. My favorites? I can’t possibly pick one! So many of these folks have become my friends and I adore them all. That’s one of coolest things that has happened since I’ve been published. The friendships I’ve made have been such a gift! Here’s a link to my YouTube channel. Come on by!

Keira: What’s the most surprising thing that has happened to you since you’ve become a romance author?

SH: Aside from the wonderful friendships I’ve made with readers and authors, I’d have to say the ability to live my dream. I never thought I’d be able to do what I’m doing for a living. I wake up every, single morning and throw a prayer of gratitude to my guardian angels. I’m blessed in so many ways.

Keira: Please tell us where readers can find you on the web, and what’s coming next for you!

SH: I’m working on the fifth Amoveo Legend novel, UNCLAIMED, and the second vampire book from my Dead in the City series (look for book 1, Tall, Dark and Vampire in August 2013). I’m also excited to be branching out and trying a new genre! I have a contemporary romance series coming with Sourcebooks. The Holding Out for Hero series will feature men in uniform and I’m thrilled to try something new.

Thank you so much for hosting me here today! Readers can find me at:

You’re a What?

by Ashlyn Chase, guest blogger and author of Strange Neighbors

I’m so glad to have an opportunity to explain how I deal with my very human characters falling in love with shapeshifters and other paranormal creatures. Thank you for asking me to write an article on this for your blog!

Imagine dating a wonderful stranger. The attraction is undeniable and mutual. Passion ignites, love grows. Now, imagine this amazing, brilliant, handsome, loving, special person telling you he’s even more ‘special’ than you could ever have imagined. He isn’t human!

Gulp. NOW what?

Now the fun begins. To make a human being in this situation realistic, he or she must question his or her own sanity. The world you thought you knew is suddenly a much larger, scarier place. If a human can change his shape into an animal, what else exists? Vampires? Fairies? Dragons? Mermen? Elves? Hey, someone check my temperature. I must be hallucinating!

In my ‘world’ there’s always a touch of magic. A relationship between a human and a were usually comes with a ‘sign’ that these two seemingly mismatched halves are indeed the only combination that will achieve the perfect whole.

In my vampire stories, they find their ‘beloved.’ In werewolf stories, it’s their ‘mate.’

So what kind of sign do I give these couples? It varies, but my most frequently used device is telepathy. The ability to communicate wordlessly develops between true mated couples. I’m not talking about spouses finishing each other’s sentences. I’m talking about actually hearing the other person’s voice speaking in the character’s head! So, naturally, the more right you are as a couple, the crazier you’ll seem to yourself.

But one or both can’t give up. Usually it’s the paranormal character who knows the lore and legend behind their particular condition, then they have to convince their partner that, “no, they’re not losing their minds,” and “yes, this is meant to be.”

Why doesn’t the human simply run off screaming into the night, never to be seen again? Well, that’s where love comes in. Love is its own form of insanity. My characters have to fall “madly in love.” It can happen at any stage of the relationship. Sometimes they’re friends first (as in the third book of the Strange Neighbors series.) Sometimes they get off on the wrong foot (as in Vampire Vintage and book two of the Strange Neighbors series.

In Strange Neighbors, book one, there’s no real device. The heroine has to rely on her feelings for and belief in the goodness of her special man. And even though his fate is sealed once he’s made his choice, he still allows her free will to commit or walk away, knowing his heart will be forever broken. That, folks, is mature love. When you want the other person’s happiness as much or more than your own and are willing to sacrifice for them—or as one adorable cartoon illustrated it once; Love is letting your spouse have the last cold tablet.

He’s looking for peace, quiet, and a little romance…

There’s never a dull moment when hunky all-star pitcher and shapeshifter Jason Falco invests in an old Boston brownstone apartment building full of supernatural creatures. But when Merry MacKenzie moves into the ground floor apartment, the playboy pitcher decides he might just be done playing the field…

A girl just wants to have fun…

Sexy Jason seems like the perfect fling, but newly independent nurse Merry’s not sure she’s ready to trust him with her heart…especially when the tabloids start trumpeting his playboy lifestyle.

Then pandemonium breaks loose and Merry and Jason will never get it together without a little help from the vampire who lives in the basement and the werewolf from upstairs…
