Did curiosity really kill the cat? Impossible, since a cat has nine lives and always lands on it’s feet.
Why do certain people keep a diary?
- Perhaps to record a period in their lives to later relive the memories.
- To feel the exact same emotions or to gain a better understanding of why things played out the way they did.
A diary are words captured in the moment. Inner thoughts and secrets we are feeling and no one else could possibly understand but a little book that comes with a lock. Pouring our souls onto lined pages, confessions, sins, sentiments we need to express. It never judges or stops us from continuing a catharsis of what we can’t seem to articulate with others.
Diaries date back to the second half of the 2nd century A.D.
Some more notable diarist include: Samuel Pepys and Anne Frank. Even Cesar apparently kept one. The more famous the person, the more desire we have to find out what they wrote. Perhaps the inquisitiveness stems from human nature or a form of therapy. We want to know what makes certain people tick. Why they behave or react to situations. Believe it or not, we are interested in other’s opinions, whether it be about ourselves or someone else.
Diaries are also a great way to keep track of history. Newspapers, books and letters are considered important journals before the introduction of the internet. Yet, we are seduced by these chronicles, falling under a magical spell we can’t seem to resist. Once we dive into the book, we are hooked like heroin addicts, flipping pages uncontrollably, needing more information, a scratch that needs to be itched.
The more scandalous, the greater the appeal, a fascination, an exhilarating thrill of the forbidden, there in front of our eyes. Taboo anyone? Of course, some people would rather take their secrets to the grave, yet, some just can’t resist inking their deepest and sometimes darkest thoughts.
Diaries will continue to be part of society even in the cyber world, we will still find a way to express ourselves via live journals or blogs but let’s be honest, who can pass up a good secret? A diary can sometimes have a bewitching effect, drawing you further into a vortex of esoterica as you spin further into a web of confidentiality.
Have you read a diary lately? I’m not talking sugar coated memoirs or once upon a time fables. Well, should you feel tempted, you may be inclined to check out, “Just call me…Rita” Book 1983. Take a trip back to the 1980’s as a delusional and dissipated young female, candidly expresses what it was like growing up in a dysfunctional, household. Come see how vanity, greed and karma pay a visit. Rita doesn’t mince words, a rebel if you will, doing whatever it takes to survive and sometimes the unthinkable while on a pair of stolen stilettos.
The “Just call me Rita” diary series is a different approach to writing, with a slang syntax, actual places and events in time and some humor to ease the blows. Some may call it raw and in your face, the anti-dear diary, others? Well, authentic. If you’re into reality reading, a little speculative of the 80’s or looking for a completely different format, these chronicles may be the curiosity that actually kills the cat and then some. Meow.

I would like to thank Keira who kindly asked me to guest blog. Did I mention she’s a saint? Oh yes, and think it’s time we build her a shrine. All the best to you sweetie, thanks again.
