Good morning! Thank you for having me at Love Romance Passion. Today I thought I’d give you my Top 10 List of Things That Make The Regency Romance So Very Sexy!
- The time period itself is quite sexy because men were gentlemen and women were ladies. The fairer sex was indeed fairer and men weren't chauvinistic dolts. Most of the gentlemen truly wanted to make a lady feel weaker and cared for, and most of the time in a good way. Ladies expected a man to open her door, pull out her chair, and mind his language and manners in front of her.
- The clothing is stunning and delicate. Wispy lace chemises, silk stockings, petticoats, brocaded gowns, hair jewels and pearls for the ladies. I love all the trappings. Men were the epitome of class and standards in perfectly tied neckcloths, cutaway coats, and Hessian boots polished to a sexy gleam, while slowly sipping a glass of brandy from the finest crystal snifter.
- Lavish accompaniments of the setting, make the reader wish they were there. The glossy black of a barouche pulled by six white spirited horses, an ivory walking stick, jeweled brooch settled below the pale throat of a delicate neck, expansive marble floors, and wall scones that flicker candlelight in corridors are perfect for a romantic rendezvous between an innocent young lady and a handsome gent or star-crossed lovers.
- Royalty is, in a word, delicious. We Americans have no royalty in the States and little knowledge of the concept of a king, queen, duke, or an earl. Titled gentlemen and ladies of quality—quite simply—fascinate us! What any reader would give to be called a Countess or Duchess. Even the words are sexy and yummy!
- Manners are not born, rather, taught and those expressed in a Regency would serve well to be used today. The intricate dance of manners is quite romantic. Think of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth dancing. My goodness, the sexuality sizzles as they perform the dance maneuvers in keeping impeccable decorum and manners. The reader is sitting at the edge of her seat, waiting for Mr. Darcy to please brush his thumb against her wrist, hold her waist just a little tighter. But alas, his gallant manners are perfect, and our desire to keep watching in the hopes one will fall short, are what keeps us breathless!
- Language is everything. Our words convey our hearts, our minds, and our wicked tongues--at times! The prose and language in a Regency is to be revered, admired, but most of all enjoyed. Words of the period are delicate, flowing, filled with a cadence that is to be savored and thought after long since closing the book's last page. We take too much for granted in modern times, and traveling back into those days where honor was the norm is quite gratifying.
- The love scene in a Regency is like silk and satin, a falling of clothes so gentle and grand, it's like the reader is a part of the fabric that ties the scene together. There is a definite feeling in a Regency when the hero and heroine succumb to the moment they know they must be together. There is no greater element of sensuality and romance. Now, that moment we've been waiting for as our hero finally touches our heroine, we let out our breath and savor the feelings we get as we read onward.
- The Ton is well, the Ton! In that group of elite, we find the most curious thing: We'd like to be a part of them. They are courtly and sexy, in the know and a station above. We vicariously want to be in the "circle" of the Ton, know their secrets and travel in their exalted circles. The Season is romantic and sexy when young women come to town in the hopes of catching a young man's eye. This class system is so black and white it’s quite intriguing.
- If there is a Ton, there is a Servant. The best Regency is the one where the beautiful servant, or lower class woman, meets and marries the titled gentleman. The Cinderella story is, by far, the most popular in all of romantic literature! And what's sexier than a plain servant being made over into the belle of the ball to knock the sails right out of the hero's bravado!
- Finally the absolute sexiest thing about the Regency . . . is you! Readers have made this genre incredibly popular. Because of your devotion and continuous support, those of us who love to write about this time period are indebted beyond words. So thank you so very much! And long live the Regency!
I hope I’ve teased your senses about the fabulous Regency. I like to think that you’ll taste a little of all things I’ve written about here in my latest Regency book An Earl to Enchant. It’s the third book in the Rogues’ Dynasty Series, and the first chapter is available on my website. I hope you’ll give it a try.
Now, please let me know what you think is sexy about the Regency!

Good morning, Amelia. What a lovely post! I agree with all your points; the first most especially. You did a wonderful job with An Earl to Enchant. I plan on buying a copy of Lord Chesterfield’s letters to place on my bookshelf; right next to your trilogy.
I agree with all ten of your comments. There is something inherently sexy, romantic and dashing about the regency period. The rakes, the scoundrels, the ladies, they all make for a compelling story. I’m not saying I would have wanted to live in that period, but to visit would be wonderful. That’s why I enjoy immersing myself in a regency novel, to experience that time period.
Good morning!
Susan, you won’t be sorry for buying Lord Chesterfield’s letters. After 3 books my copy is so marked up I need a new one!
I agree, Linda. I wouldn’t want to live in the Regency, but oh, how I would love to visit Hyde Park on a Sunday afternoon or attend a Grand Ball!
Amelia
I like the clothing and I think it would be fun to wear and get tailored, but going to the bathroom while wearing it? Not so much! lol
Oh, Keira, I agree 100%! But then I think I might like having so many servants to do things for me!
Amelia
Congrats on the new release, Amelia. I do believe living in the Regency period would be interesting, but I’m not sure about not having the luxury of modern plumbing.
Hi Amelia! So excited to read An Earl to Enchant! I think the language in the Regency period was sexy and fun. I also like all that sexual tension!
