I’ve often heard it said that a female author has a head start when it comes to writing romance because women are naturally more romantic than men. In my experience, this isn’t necessarily an accurate assessment of men. After all, if they weren’t at least a little romantic, how would they succeed in winning the hearts of the romantic women in their lives?
One area though where women probably do have a leg up (if you’ll pardon the expression) over their male counterparts is in the writing of strong lesbian fiction – romantic, erotic or otherwise. I can hear male authors protesting in the background and believe me, I’m not discounting them, especially as I’ve read some fantastic stories written by men. All I’m saying is that when it comes to writing about two women in a relationship, it doesn’t hurt if the writer has all the same working parts.
The downside of course is that as a female writer, you may fall into the trap of overanalysing what the “right” reactions are in the scene. After all, you’re casting one of your heroine’s in what could be called the “guy role” and that has a bunch of complications all of its own. However, if you can get past that, then having two female lead characters allows you, as the writer, to explore the sensuality of the experience from two female perspectives. It’s not just about the sex, but rather about the seduction. Knowing how the female body feels from the inside allows for a different interpretation, a deeper understanding.
That comes from a place of being comfortable in your own skin, secure of your own sexuality and open to the ways in which other people show and share love.
